I arrived at Rustica Sourdough on a Sunday morning around 10.30 and was there with a group of around 10 people. We waited for around 20 minutes before we were seated which was not long given the minimal number of tables. There are two large tables for big groups and then several tables for couples. It's got a very lazy vibe with many young couples (some with babies) and a family of four. The staff doesn't try to rush you out and due to the selection of yummilicious baked goods, there's a decent number of people getting takeaway coffees and pastries or loaves of bread.
Our table was set before we even sat down and our coffee orders were promptly taken. My extra hot skim cappucino was hot but sour and not to my liking. One of the guys in our group who had been to the sister Rustica cafe said that the coffee was better there. I guess it all depends on the Barista and the day!
Our orders were also promptly taken and arrived fairly quickly. By now I was starving and despite the difficult selection I had to make as all the dishes sounded amazing, I went for the eggs benedict.
The description for my eggs benedict was "lobster eggs benedict, charcoal brioche $22.00
poached eggs, greens, saffron hollandaise
+ crunchy prawn cracker"
Brunch menu descriptions are quite innovative and what is sometimes described as prawn cracker is not really a prawn cracker. So, I was quite keen to see what I would get.
When my meal arrived, everyone on my table went 'WOW' because what arrived was a massive charcoal bun loaded with goodness. The cucumber(?)/greens was quite mild and went well with the creaminess of the hollandaise sauce. The eggs were deliciously poached and complimented the butteriness of the charcoal bun. The charcoal bun didn't taste smoky or "charcoally" but was sweet, fluffy and east to cut into. What I like about rustica is that they gave us sharp knives to cut into our bread which made eating easier. The prawn cracker was more like salty crackle with a slight sea flavour and was atop a lettuce leaf. Very refreshing. Other than that, the dish didn't have much flavour. It was nice and creamy and the lettuce was refreshing but I felt that it lacked a punch.
The man sitting next to me gobbled up his beef brisket burger that came with tater tots. The smashed avocado toast was massive and again devoured by my brunch companions. The girl sitting next to me got the "kaiserfleisch" dish and though it sounds fancy aka "king of sausage", it is just bits of bacon which the girl said was not very nice.
Points to the cafe for service, presentation and innovative options, but the dish I had just lacked some "oomph"
Will definitely go back to try some of their sweet selection i.e. peanut butter croissant, matcha cronut.....mmm.. read more
