Black Alchemy has a weird thing going on. Is it Asian? Is it a run of the mill brunch café? Is it Asian fusion?
I did not get it.
They have the normal brunch menu and offerings- baked sweets, smashed avo and egg on toast, coffees/teas. But then whoa there- I spot beef randang! And purple sticky rice pudding...? A burger and chicken quesadilla? The menu here makes my mind boggle and I don't like that. If you are going for a standard brunch deal- do that. Or hey, Asian-fusion brunch can be a thing? Then stick to that. But don't dabble in random items, some things should not be juxtaposed on a menu together.
In saying that, I had the turmeric latte or 'Golden Latte' for those cool kids. It didn't exactly hit the marks for me. You can tell when they haven't prepared a turmeric latte properly and the latte still has that powdery texture to it. Not a fan. Then there's the purple sticky rice pudding. Layered with chunky fruit on top, each bite had this strange saltiness. Why?
They had a specials menu with soft shell crab on angel hair pasta. Again, I didn't get it. We went there after seeing the Facebook pictures of Malaysian dishes. Boy, were we misled. Apparently, when they feel like putting on Malaysian food, it's random, and notified via Facebook. Again, not a fan. That seems too inconsistent, how can you run a café that way? Inconsistent menu, inconsistent food. That's a no-go from me. read more
