How do women with long careers in tech get together to talk about tech ... and other topics? We go to dinner! Recently, one of my tech friends suggested Pangea, mentioning that they have a new chef. It was such a great meal, I took my husband there yesterday evening. We didn't talk tech, instead we discussed an art talk we had just left. And, between the art discussion, we talked about the food. The Crab Ragoon Cakes were an excellent starter. Ragoon refers to a style of wonton, which explains the addition of cream cheese to crab cakes. We had to taste the sauce on its own several times. Did I taste Five-Spice? Besides the attention to detail in the food, the training of the servers showed up when I asked about the Five-spice. Our server had a "cheat sheet" and unabashedly pulled it out to check. I love eating at a restaurant where the servers have access to information about the food. The cheat sheet said that the sauce is a jam. So, the server said that she would check. And, she actually did. Yep! There was Five-spice in that jam sauce. I do have one suggestion: train your servers as well in the fine art of go containers as you do about ingredients. Any time there is a dish with liquid or something that could run, don't use the containers with one little tab on the front. The sesame-ginger vinaigrette from my lovely Asian Pear Salad ended up at the bottom of the cooler. A bit of a sad ending to a wonderful dinner. read more

We dined here twice during our stay in Missoula, and truly enjoyed each dining experience. My husband's secretary gave us a gift card, and it took one lunch and one dinner to use up all the funds (it was very generous of her!). While there weren't a lot of vegan options, the ones that were available were delicious! We veganized a salad, a Brussels app, and the curry (as- is) is vegan. The presentation was beautiful, and the flavors were just right. I love the classy yet warm decor and colors, it was very inviting. Would definitely eat here again when in Missoula. We visit our family in the Missoula area, once or twice a year and this is one of our go to restaurants. Tonight was a huge disappointment with their new menu, which we were excited to try. As you can see by our bill, we tried a variety of new items. The hamburger was absolutely flavorless and dry. The Montana filet was waaaaaay over seasoned and it seemed to be the five spice mix that made the meat inedible. The broccolini also had too much of the five spice, to the point we didn't eat beyond a taste. The gem salad was weird. The tahini dressing had no good flavor and the birdseed was just weird. It's really too bad. The dipping sauce for the Japanese chicken was blah. We were all just so disappointed in our meals. We really, really liked the old menu much better. Our family lives local and frequented Pangea, but expressed shear disappointment in the changes. As we discussed, they have over seasoned the menu to the point that the food takes on too much of these uncommon spices. Bring back the favorites of the old menu and incorporate the best of the new. I recently checked out this place for lunch while out Christmas shopping since it was nearby. The lunch menu is a bit limited. I went for the roasted beet salad. It is small for the $15 price, really the size of a side salad. Prices in general seem to be on the high side I love a good beet salad, but this one was disappointing. So many things wrong with it! It was overdressed. The only greens were arugula and that had lots of stems. It was hard to get in the fork and in your mouth. Glad I was dining solo! It really needs another type of green added to it. And finally, the beets are supposed to be roasted, but there is no roasted flavor. Just tastes like plain beets. Service was ok, although the waitress never checked back after delivering food. Not sure I would try them again, but I would definitely not the have the beet salad. read more

This is a great space. I love the huge booths on the left, and how their color matches the color on the ceiling. There are great seating options. The booths, tables, the bar, and outside. Recently visited for brunch with family and we had a great experience. Service was prompt and friendly. We were seated in one of their massive booths and it offered plenty of space for six. Started with their mimosas which were delicious. Were a bit bummed that they were out of their lox dish but still plenty to choose from. I had the fried chicken and waffle - it was good, I'd recommend ordering the syrup on the side - mine was drenched and waffle was soggy by the time it was served. We were on our way to Spokane from Billings when lunch time rolled around. We didn't have a plan when we stopped in the commercial district, but this was the first thing to pop up in Yelp. Outdoor seating and vegetarian options? Yes, please! Their outdoor seating area is very cute... the tables are small and covered by an awning in exactly the right way to let light in but keep the sun out of everyone's eyes. They have a positively wonderful wine list--I went with a Chenin Blanc that was exactly right. (The wine list is full of great choices, including a Sauternes for dessert! Seriously, if you're a wine lover, check out their happy hour from 4-6:30!) I ordered a salad and mom got a burger. They were both plated beautifully, and both were delicious. The cilantro vinaigrette was exquisite, too--a good blend of smooth, acidic, and bright, with wonderful richness from the base oil. That plus the radishes? Blissful! We ate here a couple weeks ago when we were in Montana visiting family. It was pretty decent. Honestly, I would give it 3.5 stars if that was possible, but because of the service, I'm going to stretch it to 4 stars. The food was a bit pricy and to be honest, it wasn't that great. The short ribs I had were a little over seasoned, kind of salty. I was also surprised about the kimchi deviled eggs. It sounded better than it was. It was very basic and it was half an egg. The portion size was also pretty small and there were about 3 tiny fingerling potatoes. I appreciate the execution and the plating. It looked great! But it was just okay, in my opinion. Maybe I was expecting more because I'm Korean and I like to try fusion style plates, but I wasn't too impressed. The ambiance and vibe of the restaurant was awesome and our server was great. I really wanted this place to be awesome but it was one of the most chaotic dining experiences we've ever had. It looks very nice, but they need work. Our jumbo lump crab appetizer was delivered at the same time as our entree, and it was a crab cake. We sent it back. Wait staff kept running by our table, we had to remind the waiter about our drinks, and they even tried to charge us for the appetizer. Never once did a floor manager come to our table, even though he passed by a dozen times. The whole experience was frenetic and disturbing. Not even close to a nice relaxing dinner. Pangea is a cool restaurant in downtown Missoula serving global food and drink. The restaurant has tons of seating inside and out and has very friendly staff. Staff had a great attitude and looked to keep a clean restaurant. The staff recommended a few drinks and Flatbreads. The Flatbread had a great subtle char flavor along with tasty ingredients. The Greek Flatbread was great while the Kaya was a bit too sweet for us. The drinks were unique but unfortunately not something that we loved. The menu has plenty of options for everybody. Tried the Crispy Pork Belly small plate and Corn Mache Choux side- both were really delicious and more than enough food for my meal. Was told there was a new chef and several new menu items with a Southern bent. For a drink I had the Coconut Espresso Martini and while I enjoyed the toasted coconut rim the drink itself fell a bit flat. This is a better dessert drink choice than to start off a meal. It's always a great day when a new higher end restaurant bar comes to Missoula. The former liquid planet has transformed into a modern, contemporary space that is almost reminiscent of a fancy hotel than a Missoula restaurant. I've been four times now, and have been impressed with the service, the food and the drinks. The flatbreads are great, the ceviche tacos are amazing. I had one of the better Caesar salad's that I've had in a really long time here. The rose city tonic is not only a beautiful presentation, but an interesting mix of flavors that you would never think would go together... (tonic, rose, coffee beans and sage) that are actually really good. It's also really nice to see a few nonalcoholic cocktail options on the menu, featuring alcohol free mixers. I tried the non-alcoholic "little less old fashioned" and it was actually quite good. A few critiques... The drink menu is almost completely on the sweet end. Minus a couple of options, the vast majority of the drinks are a too sweet for my taste. I was there three times in a row mid-week and the music was great, but I went on a Friday and they were blasting 80s rock and pop so loud that our server could not hear us and we could barely speak to each other. It's great to see some vegan and vegetarian options on the menu, I eat meat but love to try vegan and vegetarian food as well. I am generally a fan of black bean burgers and I've had some amazing ones at different restaurants across the country. The smoked tomato jam and red onions were a great flavor profile, but they need to get bigger buns. There was a almost half an inch of the patty that stuck outside the bun all the way around, and as anyone who has eaten vegetarian burgers knows, they can be quite dry. This would've been solved with a larger bun or a roll so that the condiments could cover the whole patty, but as prepared, it was too dry on the outside edges. My last critique is the insane amount of plastic straws given. One of the times I went it was just myself and one other person and over the course of us having two drinks each we ended up with 14 straws. Two and three straws were placed in every single item, including our water glasses. I asked the server if the straws were compostable, which would've made adifference, but unfortunately they were your standard plastic bar straws. I really hope the bar manager will consider doing away with straws unless a customer asks, and having a option that does not harm the environment. I will gladly up the rating if that is addressed. read more

4.5 stars. back for our once/yr visit--as last time they were just changing their menu and under staffed we wanted to try Pangea again and very glad we did. 4 of us ate dinner on a saturday nt--had reso but not crowded at 7pm (most people at the fair tonight I guess). Ate inside this time, seated right away. Huge kitchen with floor to ceiling windows. Nice ambiance but the cook we could see through the glass was eating french fries as he worked--probably not cool. On the other hand our waitress (Josie) was awesome--helpful with suggestions, answering questions (one of us is celiac so strict Gluten free), joining in our somewhat slanted sense of humor and very attentive and cheerful. It's so nice to be around people who are good at and truly enjoy their job! Cocktails: The girls got "the seduction of Lola" which one of them had enjoyed before but only had a picture of it--luckily Josie identified the pic so they could enjoy it again. Guys got a whiskey drink with a touch of fresh fruit--but not sweet--excellent. Later we had prickly pear margaritas that Josie informed us were "mocktails" but she added tequila to keep the party going. Food--we shared everything and all agreed on the reviews. The chicken satay was excellent--rivaled only by my own secret recipe. The brussel sprouts were very well done--even charred--but we like them that way--and a very large serving. The ahi tacos were disappointing (my wife and I are from the west coast so we are a bit spoiled when it comes to fresh fish). Nice crispy shell but the ahi was mashed up like hamburger and there was really no "flavor". The tuna needed to be coarsely chopped with some sort of soy sauce/wasabi/aioli/cilantro based topping/sauce to bring out the flavor. We shared an entree of Malaysian chicken which was flavorful and melted in our mouths. The Vegitarian among us got a flafel sandwhich which she enjoyed. Dessert was creme brulee and ice cream with the margaritas. Josie brough us a surprise glass of dragonfruit pearls--large salmon egg shaped balls and big straws to suck them up--what a hoot!! great night overall--hope we can work in another visit sometime. read more

The menu here is unique. We showed up on a special day and they had Bison Prime Rib. Gotta say that was pretty awesome and full of flavor. I'm not a fan of Brussels Sprouts but a quick trade for my wife's mashed potato's made for an excellent dinner. Bar Staff was great and told us the story of the farmer who sells the Bison to this restaurant. Definitely worth sitting down. We will be back to explore the other options in the menu for sure. read more

Quick stop for happy hour turned cheap tastebud delight! Truly surprised... Maya and I chose the Kaya flat bread and tuna tartare tacos, which we're devoured jealously. The tacos were dialed in and if you like pineapple on pizza, you owe it to yourself to try Kaya, a freaky delicious Jamaican Italian fusion. We also got the wild game chili which was fine, Just tasted like any normal beef chili recipe with different meat and lots of beans; so not special at all, but it didn't taste bad and it did warm us up. Amazing food, amazing service. I've eaten tons of their meals and all have hit the spot. I already miss the old menu that had calamari, probably the best I've ever had. But the way they treat/take care of their employees seems awful. They are reprimanded in front of customers, and half of the cooks in the kitchen seemed half dead when i was walking to the bathroom. It looked like a sweat shop. These people need a break, or at the least, Pangea needs to hire more employees rather than slaving these poor people out.
