I see mostly good reviews posted here but I personally found the chicken to be underwhelming. Nothing special about it. I was worried about the full order being too big but then the half order was actually quite small. The breaded mushrooms were just OK. This is our go to place in Missoula for the best fried chicken. It's always cooked fresh to order, never greasy with a light and very flavorful coating. The chicken is always hot and juicy; never dry. Their salads are always fresh and the fries hot and delicious. You also have the option of eating upstairs in the restaurant area or after 3pm, eating downstairs in the bar. We prefer the bar as it's quieter (large groups and families are in the restaurant and orders seem to take longer upstairs). If you're in a hurry, chill out.. the chicken is cooked fresh to order and takes about 20 minutes and the wait is always worth it. The service has always been exceptional (we love Leslie who has been working there for years...she's a rock star!). Guy Fierri from "Diners, Drive In's and Dives" should seriously check out this wonderful chicken spot that has been a Missoula must for decades! it was a bunch of teenagers with zero supervision. they didn't know to even lie about how long things took! over 45 min and zero food. I had the gizzards and my boyfriend had a salad with crispy chicken on it. their excuse/lie was that the grill was too crowded. The fryers sat empty and neglected. There were 5-6 people in the kitchen too! Nope, they cater to the drunk people in the basement bar because they make them more tip. Did I think I would eat half a chicken? No. Did I eat half a chicken? Yes! If in Missoula and you want chicken. Come here. Very good, nothing extra, fried chicken. Crispy and seasoned well, no sauces needed. The fries and coleslaw were good accompaniment. Casual place. Friendly crowd and crew. I found this place on a hidden gems of Missoula list and I'm so glad we decided to try it!! We learned pretty quick that we weren't there for the service. It wasn't horrible but just slow, especially when a large table came in after us and got fed first. It made us question our decision to try it. But then the food came. The sampler was pretty good, nothing fancy and the inside of the popper was cold. The fish and chips were good, wasn't digging the Cole slaw. The chicken though is where it's at. The white meat dinner was so juicy and tender but perfectly brown and crisp on the outside. And they leave the wing attached to the breast, such a great idea. We'll definitely be back! read more

Just not feeling it. The crispy outside was excellent and they add good spices to their flour mixture; however the chicken was dry - they cooked it too long. We were very disappointed because we were told this was the place to go for fried chicken. Their chef needs to come south and we can give them a lesson or two on how to fry chicken. Also, pass on their onion rings.... The batter is thick and reminds me of the batter used for beer battered fish - it was off-putting. Stick with their fries as they are legit! read more

This place is known for its chicken. They have probably by far the best fried chicken I have ever had any place. It's been around for a long time and it's your typical diner, which is really nice. The service is so wonderful everyone is friendly the food comes out fast and piping hot. The prices are fantastic and it's just a warm welcoming place that is a go to if you want good fried chicken. The food is just average unfortunately. Last time I was there I got a hamburger. It was kind of tasteless People that work there are usually nice. Meh. I had their chicken about 20 years ago and it is the same. Very hot and oily, but no flavor. Tastes a lot like old fryer oil. Really, same as I remembered. What a food find and also, what a fantastic chicken house! The Double Front Cafe raises the bar for the best chicken ever eaten in my book and definitely puts memories of grandmas recipe in the back seat. My lunch portion of a large breast and wing were fried perfectly to be mild and well balanced with a pleasant blend of seasonings integrated into that flaky, golden and delicious crunchy skin that delivered every bite of that white meat to be fresh and juicy without being greasy. It is pretty obvious this place has chicken down to an art and a science. Oodles of crisp skin fries sided my order along with a few sliced pickles decimated any hunger pangs that were there previous to the visit. Kids meals, chicken tenders and grilled chicken are also on the menu along with some memorable salad dressings. Lots of comfortable booth and table seating in this spacious historical building that includes a bar. Would love to give a good review but they tell you to order 30 minutes in advance yet their phone was busy for 3 hours. Their website has a message contact page that doesn't work when trying to send an order. I was about to give up but tried calling one more time and got through, we ordered Gizzards, Regular Chicken Dinner and Dark Meat only Dinner. I've got to be a 100% honest, was not impressed with the food one bit. Chicken and Gizzards were cooked to perfection, but there wasn't any flavor to it at all. We thought maybe it was a sign of COVID, well that wasn't the case. We left Coeur d'Alene around 1:30, and made our way to Montana. At roughly 4:00, we crossed over to Montana, and we followed the GPS to the city center and tried finding a place to eat. The first place we went to (Notorious P.I.G.) closed at 4:00, so we Yelped another place, and discovered Double Front, a restaurant that has been cooking up fried chicken in Missoula for over 50 years. The history of Double Front was not always a chicken restaurant and is actually over 100 years old. Per the website: The Double Front was built in 1909, with no alley or back door and so was properly named with a front door at 122 Alder St. and another at 121 Railroad St. In the early years between 1909 and 1920, the building was used mostly as a pool hall. After 1920, during prohibition days, the building became a residence and rumor has it some bootlegging may have occurred. In 1934 and 1935 when beer and wine became legal again, the residence changed to a bar and was owned by the Mangan family. It was that year that chicken was first served at the Double Front. Managers over the years included Elmer Shea in 1948 and George Austin in 1952. After an auto accident which took Mr. Austin's life in 1959, the Double Front was run by the estate until 1961, at which time the Herndon family bought the cafe and started remodeling the building. Although big changes in appearance have taken place over the years, the quality of our chicken has remained the same. All chicken is cooked to order, and it's always fresh, never frozen...because the best takes a little longer - just as it did in 1935! The chicken was cooked to order, and it actually took longer than they anticipated. For our troubles, the waitress said we were being offered an appetizer on the house. We told her to suggest something, and she said their breaded fried mushrooms were popular. The mushrooms were fantastic, and so was the chicken. It was definitely worth the wait. We ordered the white meat chicken dinner, which was 2 whole breasts, with the wing attached, fries and pickles for $13.00. Stephen and I decided to share the dinner, and we added a side order of cole slaw for $3.00. There's no sales tax in Montana, I guess. Our meal with 2 beers and a diet coke came to just $24.50! But let's be real, the chicken is the reason why you're sitting in that seat scrolling through the reviews. Don't mind me while I take a moment to crush your hopes and dreams. There's enough salt in the chicken to pickle your organs for up to a decade. I like salty food, but this was SALTY salty. It's common to leave chicken in salt water to make it juicy, but either I got the pieces from the bottom of the bucket or the chef had the salt/water ratio mixed up.
