Being from the south, fried chicken and gizzards are a staple. We were very happy with our experience and will make this our go to place for some fried goodness. This review pertains to the fried gizzards. My dining companion says the fried chicken is pretty good. The slow cooking preparation of the fried gizzards seems to me to render out both the flavor of the gizzards and their snap. I have had a lot of fried gizzards in my time but this is the first time with this preparation that my companion says is common in Florida. This is one of those amazing local joints that you hope the Food Network never discovers. There should be lines down the block for this chicken, but thankfully, there are not. On my first visit I was skeptical. I knew it couldn't be bad, it's fried chicken, but how good can it actually be? The answer, $#%-ing amazing! This is the juiciest, crispiest chicken you will ever sink your teeth into. I usually get the regular chicken dinner, which is huge. It is half of a chicken, with a mountain full of fries. If you ask, you can get a collection of dipping sauces, like hot sauce and ranch. We always eat in the bar downstairs. It is usually half empty down there, and the tables can be pushed together to accommodate big groups. The tap list is your standard dive bar fare, but they do have a few local beers on tap. Slow service for higher priced fried food. In case you are still interested, do not order out, you get smaller portions for the same price. Last time I ordered an hour ahead, I told them I would be there 50 minutes from the time I call and asked if the food would possibly be ready an hour from the time I called. They said yes and when i got there they told me 10 minutes, then 2 minutes after 10 minutes that became another 15 minutes and then another 3 minutes that became another 15 minutes. I do not like waiting an hour and a half to get some mediocre fried food and so it will be a while before I try this place again. The fish and chips or seafood dinner I would say is actually better than the fried chicken as Albertsons gives you triple the fried chicken for $5 on certain days of the week in Missoula. Better yet, I personally believe the best fried chicken in Missoula is actually at the North Reserve Albetsons location. The service is just so slow and they lie straight to your face. No one should say 2 or 3 minutes when it is 25 to 30 minutes. That's not estimating, that's just upright dishonesty and bad business. read more

In general, I don't mind waiting to place an order, but the restaurant was completely empty. I ended up having to ask the waitress if we could place an order. 45 minutes after placing our order, our food was finally ready. But somehow we were an entree short. After asking the waitress if the rest of the order was coming, she politely said, "yes" but proceeded to go back to the kitchen and yell at the chef. About 5 minutes later we had received everything we ordered. The food was alright, but nothing to write home about. Overall, the service was bad, the food was decent, and the price point was about average. I will go to KFC before returning here. read more

Crisp skin, delectable breading, moist and tender on the inside. I would eat it again. The fries that come with the dinner are not great--standard frozen fare. So ignore them and go for the chicken. They also have a nice selection of local microbrews that go great with the chicken. For $8.50 for the meal you can't go wrong here. read more

It may take a bit to get your order but that's because your order is made fresh and not sitting in a warming bin. I got the half a chicken (breast, wing, thigh, leg) for $12.50. More than I could eat at one sitting. It came with seasoned fries that were just as delicious as the chicken. My waitress was friendly and attentive. The portions are huge! Chicken is moist and the skin is crunchy and oily, I generally liked it. As far as sides go, I got the fried macaroni and cheese which was a huge disappointment. It seemed like Kraft Mac n cheese frozen and then fried-- no freshness or any flavor really except grease. The fries were crunchy but also had no flavor because the grease overpowered everything. Well my business partner and I could not resist trying out this Missoula eatery for all the incredible reviews on the chicken. Both of us, one southern and one from Idaho, just cant come to call this the best chicken we have ever had. Above avg yes, best , not close. The chicken though was juicy and overall fairly crispy and tender . flavor..not that great. I would give it a 3.75 The fries that came with it!! 0 points. They were Horrible. The 85 minute wait, completely unacceptable at lunch during the week. There were only two tables busy when we arrived. So many nice folks came in after us and had their chicken immediately by having called ahead. Obviously if we try this again we will do just that. The overall experience was good. All basic service expectations were met and food was decent, NOT the best chicken in the west, but it was acceptable. I had high expectations based on yelp reviews. Service was good the bartender was good at anticipating needs and making sure everything was taken care of, but was more interested in reading the paper than engaging with her guests. The salad was $4 for a cup of lettuce (which was romaine and I appreciated that) 2 carrots and 2 grape tomatoes. $10 for chicken and French fries was a little excessive. The chicken quality was excellent the batter is what underwhelmed me. It wasn't crunchy which is quite honestly the entire point of fried chicken. It was chewy. The flavor of the batter wold have been amazing if it had gotten some sort of seasoning... Even just pepper, but a Cajun/mild spicy flavor would have been great. I love Missoula, having traveled to this awesome college town several times when I was a law student in sorta nearby Moscow, ID. I return to N. Idaho/W. Montana usually once a summer to meet up with buddies and to do some camping and serious partying. Usually, we swing by Missoula for a "motel night" and some drunken revelry on the town. When we do this, we ALWAYS go to the Double Front for our chicken dinners. This is important so pay attention: Go immediately downstairs to the bar! You can look at the menu and order from the bartender. There is absolutely no sense in sitting in the upstairs area with the children. You're here to imbibe and eat, not to hang out with the "after soccer" crowd. Just so you know, this is NOT a healthy chicken dinner (although they have other items on their menu, I have no idea what they are as I've only ordered the chicken). The chicken dinner is "broasted" (deep fried) style. It takes a 1/2 hour to prepare your food, so forget just ordering a pint of beer while you wait -- get the whole damn pitcher. Also, when you order, make sure you order "extra pickles". There is no greater joy then getting a huge container filled with delicious dill slices along with your chicken and fries! Finally -- don't forget dessert! "Dessert" at Double Front, among my friends, is a shot (or two) of whiskey (yeah, it's a full bar). What was described as "the best in town" was store bought shredded cabbage with bottle dressing on top. WOOF. I got nervous. I thought of dashing before our chicken arrived, but I stayed and I am so glad I did. The chicken was hot and crisp and not a touch oily. The fries were double fried (usually a favorite), but without a house-made dipping sauce it was over kill next to the chicken. Best broasted chicken I have ever had - moist, tender, not too greasy for fried chicken and an inexpensive meal. TIP: It takes about 30 minutes for the chicken to cook and get to your table. So, call and order your chicken first, they will start cooking it. Wait 15 minutes or so, and by the time you get there, it should almost be done. Just let them know you'll be dining in. Certain nay-sayers will dismiss Double Front because "It's so bad for you!" Who cares? You only live once. Every once in a while, eating something this delicious will always be part of my life. In all my travels around the U.S. I can honestly say I have never had chicken that had even anything close to the same flavor that their chicken dinners offer. Ezells in Seattle and my wife's (big ups!) but thats about it. They get a stellar crust going on that chicken which as some good seasoning in it, its not just flour. The Double Front gets 4 stars from me for being OPEN (after 9pm), for being a family-friendly & kid-friendly place, for freshly prepared food when ordered, for good basic food, for great service, for being a clean restaurant. I don't eat poultry so the menu is very limited for me, thankfully fish & chips are offered as well as pan-fried oysters, and fried prawns. My traveling companion enjoyed the grilled chicken Asian salad with huckleberry vinaigrette. We saw quite clearly that this is NOT a fast-food restaurant. Your expectations need to be re-organized if you expect fresh chicken on the bone to be prepared in less than 30 minutes. If you can't wait the time it takes, it's ok to call ahead to place your order and eat-in. read more

Damn good chicken--that's all you get. It's not unbelievable, knock-your-socks-off excellent, but one visit will almost definitely mean a return visit. It's solid, hearty, dependable food. The chicken dinners (their "specialty") cost around $6.50, for example, for half a fried chicken, a mound of french fries (the only side) and pickles. The menu warns it takes 25 minutes to make a chicken dinner--and they mean 25 minutes. Mine took about that long, but it's worth the wait. When it arrives, it's piping hot and comes with a separate basket for bones. And don't forget to order some of their excellent cole slaw for a starter, too. They serve beer and the usual beverages, but I'd especially recommend a pint of local Moose Drool, an amber ale that went great the the chicken. I was there for dinner: it was kid friendly and packed. There's a lounge downstairs as well. One waitress ran the entire packed restaurant with a smile and grace that I wish I could bring to my own work when its stressful. It is, as I've heard from locals, a Missoula institution, so if you're just passing through, give it a try. If you've lived your life in Missoula and not tried the Double Front, you just might get your status as a Missoulian revoked. read more
