I was out here in the boondocks of Ann Arbor...the suburbs of a suburban village...doing some dental work and since the climbing gym is half-way out here (or half way home) it made sense to get in some climbing. The problem is that the dentist appointment was over at noon and the gym doesn't open till 3:00...and I was hungry with lots of work to do. Panera, as mediocre as it is overall, was the perfect solution to that problem. I wanted food, real food, not cafe food. But I also wanted coffee w/ espresso (i.e. a red eye). And I needed a place to hang for a couple of hours to do work...that requires internet access and a power outlet. So I tend to avoid Panera in most circumstances, but being a chain it is reliable, and I knew that it had all these features. And I even have a fireplace going here. Still the bacon bravo sandwich the that the worker recommended was below special. The coffee is barely drinkable, even with sugar added. Some of the bread is good, and I guess some of the pastries are. But don't come here if you're trying to trim down. I'm not sure anything on the menu is healthy, but anyway the bread products will drag you in and ruin your good eating intentions. read more

Panera in general is a reliable chain with generally good soups, salads, and sandwiches. Unfortunately the service at this Panera has declined pretty dramatically. We've had incorrect orders, complete swaps of our order for someone else's order, and most recent Call Ahead order that was placed in a soaking wet bag that promptly gave way, spilling our soups all over the ground. This is absolutely the worst Panera location I have ever experienced. I have always liked Panera's wide range of menu choices. However, The restaurant on Jackson Rd. is appallingly bad. The eating area is filthy. The counters are dirty, and the workers seem bored and unhappy to be there. If you order takeout, there is only a 50% chance that they will get it right. We enjoy the food choices at all the Paneras. They have a high degree of consistency from location to location. However, at this location the cleanliness of the dine in areas has turned into a debacle. If you find a clean table you've beaten the odds. Getting an accurate order at the speed they had used to provide service can often be frustrating as well. I'd say online ordering and carry out is the best way to go, but the order accuracy issues have bitten us more than once. For years I waited for the St. Louis Bread Company to open a Panera Bread restaurant in Ann Arbor. I was a first day customer when the first one opened. Now they have 5 stores in Ann Arbor and all are hugely successful. I love their food and bakery. My only complaint involves the 3 stores nearest the University. They are frequently full of students who hog 4 top tables for just one student with a laptop. They won't move and won't share and Panera Bread refuses to do a thing about it. This Panera is nearest to my work. I have ordered several times over the years and each time I have ordered has been a hassle. For example.... I like very plain food. I usually ask for a turkey and Swiss on white bread. I was told one time that the White bread is reserved for children's sandwiches, so I picked the next plainest bread. I also enjoy the steak and cheese grilled sandwich. I ordered steak and extra cheese, being careful to ensure I didn't leave something on that I wouldn't like. I received my order to find meat only. I tried to call to see if I could get a credit for at least the cheese, the message said they don't have time to answer the phone between 12-1. I gave up, at least I could eat it. This last time I ordered the steak and extra cheese again, that's it. Meat, cheese, bread....it looked ok, I bit into it and bam some sort of nasty sauce. I called immediately and was able to get through. I talked to a manager person who was seemed happy to replace it, but seemed put off that I wanted it delivered, again. The delivery guy, who was very nice and apologetic handed me the sandwich and left. I should have checked before he left, because, again, a plain steak sandwich. No cheese. When I pay almost $20 for a sandwich, chips and a soda, Plus $3 delivery fee, plus tip, I want the sandwich that I ordered. read more

Ordered delivery to my office for lunch, which is a location they frequently deliver. Usually they run a few minutes late, which is nothing too upsetting or unexpected. This time they were over 25 minutes late (weather being a non-issue); when I called to inquire about my order and understand why I was waiting almost double the expected time-I was immediately placed on hold for a manager. I sat on hold for around 5 minutes and then the line hung up and I had to start from scratch. I called back in, and the employee who answered asked if I wanted Managment to call me back. I really used to like going to Panera. Their sandwiches and pastries are so yummy. But, I recently went to Panera on Jackson Road in Ann Arbor. After my order, I waited almost 30 minutes for my food. It was quite busy so I figured this was the problem. Then I realized all the people around me were also waiting as long as I. When my soup came, along with the sandwich, it was served in a take away container. They had run out of plates and bowls. I did receive an email from Panera apologizing for the delay in service. Since I've eaten at Panera frequently over the years, I thought that it was just one of those days for Panera, so I tried to order another day, today! This Panera location has been going down the tubes for several years. Whether eating in or taking out, there is an error with our order 90% of the time. I've discussed this with the day manager more times than I can count and she could care less. Today, we picked up a $185 bagel catering order that was placed five days ago. It was wrong, of course, and I was told there was nothing that could be done because it was rung in the register wrong. We received some rolls instead of bagels. I've been to this particular Panera a couple of times as it is the closest to my home. I like Panera for the options that they serve. I'm a former bread baker so I think I can judge their creations. They have good solid options for sandwiches and pastries. I like the Asiago roast beef sandwich and the Italian sandwich as well. I never get the chips as a side, I get the chunk of multi-grain baguette. Their bagels are tasty (if a bit pricey) too. Overall, it's a bettter, healthier option for lunch, which I like! read more

We stopped at this Panera while passing through town. The first thing we noticed was the smell of urine when we walked in. First I thought I was imagining it, but upon visiting the restroom, the smell was bad enough to make me hold my breath. Next, both of our coffees were strangely flavored, obviously there had been some mix-ups. We tried several different coffees and they were all out of whack. I wonder if the water from the soda fountain in this place is well water? If not, my friend and I both agreed it had a distinct egg flavor to it. This is an excellent Panera Bread location. The employees are nice, friendly, and polite and the food is great for quick lunch/dinner. Many times I will go get dinner relatively late in the evening right before they close (8:30-9ish) and they will package my soup and salad up nicely and throw in a whole baguette instead of just a small slice. We recently used this Panera Bread for an extensive catering order in conjunction with our daughter's wedding weekend. We had the bridal party and guests getting ready at a nearby hotel and ordered lunch from this Panera Bread to serve them. We worked with Todd, the Catering coordinator, who was very helpful and professional. He not only delivered the order on time but everything was exactly as we requested, and he was careful to include napkins and condiments for us. Tonight was the last straw, our food came in dirty dishes with dirty silverware. People working here have nasty attitudes. I said to the kid that brought our food my dish is dirty, he walked away, I did not know if he was bringing me a clean bowl of soup or what, but to late because husband complained to manager got our money back and we left. Panera is definitely a restaurant to try. The service was good, the food came within 10 minutes. From sandwiches to cookies, they had lots of options. They have great lunch items like, Napa Almond Chicken Salad Sandwich, and the Green Goddess Cobb with Chicken Salad. They have, bagels, sandwiches, Mac & cheese, cookies, brownies, and more. The noise level was tolerable. It wasn't very noisy but it wasn't super quiet. Though it can get very loud at times. Overall Panera Bread is a great place to enjoy a meal. read more
