We were supposed to catch the train back to Paris but found out the night before that things had been cancelled due to the rail strikes. My friend spent hours on the phone rearranging flight, room accommodations and so forth and would have forgotten to eat if I hadn't suggested we get out of the apartment and go find something.
It was midnight and Paneolio was conveniently located a few steps from our apartment, so we got a couple slices of pizza and my initial thought was to take them to go but then the friendly gentleman behind the counter said... "and what to drink?"
A drink sounded like just the thing. So, I took his suggestion of gin and tonics his way and made with his favorite gin, Monkey 47 - Schwarzwald dry gin, from Germany... which I had never heard of before.
I watched as he burnt a rosemary sprig and tucked it under the glasses until they filled with smoke, then he turned them over and mixed the gin and some Fever Tree tonic.
It was all delicious and just what we needed after a stressful evening. read more
