You don't walk into Big Bad John expecting refinement--but even by dive bar standards, this place…read morefeels less like a throwback and more like it's been left behind. There's no warmth waiting for you here. No charm to soften the edges. Just a small bar, guarded--literally--by a security presence, and a room filled with heavy, worn wooden booths that have seen better decades. Not years--decades. Look up, and you'll find the signature décor: a ceiling crowded with women's undergarments. Bras, mostly. Some scrawled with messages, others just hanging there, collecting time and dust in equal measure. The occasional pair of panties or something more adventurous makes an appearance, but the effect isn't quirky so much as... committed. Committed to a theme that's long overstayed its welcome. Dust is part of the aesthetic here, whether intentional or not. It clings to everything, including those ceiling relics, turning what might once have felt playful into something closer to a time capsule you're not sure should've been opened. And yet--there's life in the room. The ambiance, somehow, is still jovial. People are laughing, drinks are flowing, and there's a certain unspoken agreement among patrons to just go with it. The drinks are surprisingly cheap by Victoria standards, which certainly helps smooth over some of the rougher edges. And then there are the peanuts--toss the shells on the floor, no one's judging. In fact, it's encouraged. It's chaotic, a little grimy, and unapologetically itself. For me, it's a one-and-done. The kind of place you visit once, take in the spectacle, and check the box. But talk to the regulars, and you'll hear a different story. For them, this isn't a relic--it's a ritual. A place that hasn't changed, and that's exactly the point. Whether that's endearing or exhausting probably depends on how much nostalgia you're willing to drink with your beer. Cheers...

We tried a new restaurant (to us) in Surrey last night called Skye Avenue. It was such a lovely…read moreexperience. It is beautifully appointed It has nice high ceilings but there is still a warm welcoming feel. It's the staff. They are all so welcoming and treat you like they are genuinely happy to serve you. They have music playing but it is subtle, adds nicely to the ambiance and is not too loud. The food was very good. We got there before happy hour so we were able to order a couple of glasses of decent house wines for $6.00 a glass and shared an appetizer of crispy chicken lettuce bites. For entrees my husband had an 8 oz. prime rib special. It was so good. cooked as he had requested it. One of the better prime ribs that we've tasted and it was only $30.00 as a Sunday special. I had the lamb loin that was also very good. Service was also very good. Our server, Stella was so busy but she checked on us regularly to ensure that we were well taken care of. It is so nice when you go to a restaurant and it exceeds your expectations. This has the vibe of a fine dining restaurant with the décor, the muted background music, the service and the food. The prices are very reasonable for what they offer. We highly recommend and we'll be back.

I'd like to do 4.5/5 but I'm not allowed half stars. I finally got to visit this restaurant that…read morehas been on my list. I didn't actually realize how close it was via transit as it is right at the Surrey Central building where the Surrey SFU campus is. I believe it is the old pub/liquor store that used to be there. It is very beautifully decorated inside for the holiday season and spacious. It looks like it could honestly be nice for corporate events or semi private gatherings like a birthday/retirement or just regular date night. Our server was very nice so no qualms there. The only thing that threw me off was that our table was seated next to a bit of a gap by a booth and servers kept going through that area "as a short cut", which was a little tight on my end instead of them going around our table. that being said it was relatively empty when we came in, so I was kind of hoping that we didn't have to sit so close to other guests when there were available tables elsewhere. We caught happy hour which was nice and I would recommend their prime rib slider. The lettuce chicken wraps were good but nothing to venture out solely for. We had asked if they could substitute tofu instead of the chicken but we weren't able to make any adjustments to the dish. Our waiter did mention that there is a prime rib special on Sundays and that sounds really good. He also recommended to call ahead and reserve as it can often be sold out the day of. The truffle Parmesan fries were great, we got the cheese on the side as my friend is vegan. She had a crispy tofu bowl and said it was good. I'd like to come back for their prime rib special with my family. Pay parking lot is right across from the restaurant by the skytrain. too bad the restaurant doesn't validate parking.
