I'm giving this place a lot of TLC because it's patrons deserve it. These are largely end-of-the-line alcoholics who are living on next to nothing. This is what they live for and I mean that literally. I want to see them keep their space where they can drink for cheap (at this stage, they drink to stay alive. It's not to get drunk. Necessarily) and have a few minutes of socializing. I know the thing now has shifted from dive bars to breweries, but I don't want places like Savoy's and others to close. Nobody likes alcoholism and drug addiction, but that's what's going on, and for now, alcohol is keeping long-term/end-stage alcoholics alive. I wish there was a better way. But I'm grateful there are still some cheap places for folks to go. read more

The hot new thing in Vancouver is dive bars, with the poverty-stricken elderly alcoholics losing their seedy drinking holes to a rising new generation of hip youngsters. For one reason or another, they seek out cheap liquor in run down areas, and take over filthy locations by playing ironic music and inviting all of their friends on Facebook. What used to be a scary and depressing series of bars near Main and Hastings is slowly developing into regular hangouts for overdressed students who love the novelty of poverty. But not the Savoy. This place is perhaps the most exclusive of all the dingy bars on Hastings, in that anyone who looks like they might have been remotely spoiled as children are not welcome by any of the regulars. Full of loud obnoxious drunks who've seen it all and people who would stab you for your shoes, the vibe is very "you think you're better than me?" and it's not unusual to get yelled at to leave by the close knit group of angry "too ugly to ever get famous no matter how good they are at singing" regulars. But man, the drinks are super cheap, and the song selection is pretty great. The bartenders and bouncers are alright too, they usually seem happy to see polite and wholesome people who actually leave tips, but they can't really do anything to protect you from whatever the locals have in mind. read more

Well I wanted a neighborhood pub to visit and we choose one on Hastings...not a wise choice. The street folks are welcome to sit at tables, it was 6PM and folks were already getting cut off..but not cut off like you need to slow down, cut off like they can't stand and function cut off lol. Would be a great place to people watch IMO but everything felt a little sticky inside to be aware of that. And outside you might be put off by the campers. read more

Ok, so I went in at around 4:30Pm and got out at around 11 PM. There was something at this place that just kept me there and we kept playing pool for like an hour or so and it was great. I met this guy Mike, George the Hippy and Ben there. I listened to their wild stories about drug dealers, gangsters and what not. Crazy crazy place full of friendly people and since I am a 24 yr old college going guy from India, people were asking me what the hell in this world brought me here, and I don't know what I was doing there, but I had a lot of effing beer and 1 pitcher was like 13.73$. This was one of the wildest experiences I had in Vancouver but I would say just be careful when you are there. read more

This is a proper dive bar. Located in the epicenter of failed ambitions and dreams - Hastings and Main. Drinks are dirt cheap. Cash. First night there there was a live band, playing decent music. On Sundays they have karaoke. The crowd ranges from young people drinking on the cheap to old timers escaping the world outside. There is a pool table, but it's moved out of the way. read more
