I regard this as the place where time stands still. The restaurant is divided across two train carriages, with the kitchen in between. I arrived there on Boxing Day, and found that the cafe itself was empty bar one small family group.
This place is tiny, so there's no mistaking when you enter with the bang on the door. I just wanted a coffee, so I sat down and waited.
And waited.
And waited.
A couple of looks from the kitchen staff, but still I waited.
A young fellow in a chefs apron passed me by, but still I waited.
A raised hand to the kitchen, and still I waited.
I got out the phone, played a few games, and still waited.
After 30 minutes, that was enough. I'm of the opinion that if you have to go up to cafe staff and remind them to do their job, then your not likely to enjoy the subsequent coffee. So, I left.
All I can think is that none of the staff wanted to be there, and the best way they could get home early was by simply not serving anyone.
Other than that, I noted on the menu that the pancakes were stupidly expensive.
The Margate Train is a great concept with heaps of potential, but over the years, the carriages have been leased by a succession of hobby-shopkeepers that really don't do the location justice. read more
