Baxter is hidden up an alley across the road from Beastlands, and provides a small and sweet refuge from such a place. It also has a small selection of sweets in the cabinet AND toasted sammos available for purchase! My cubano filled the hole in my belly quite nicely, and was an extra treat as I wasn't expecting such a thing to be available--we were going to just have a coffee at Baxter and then find somewhere to eat, and the sandwiches solved that problem nicely. There's not a great deal of space to dine in (slash outside on the astroturf) but things weren't busy so it was easy for us to pull up a milk crate or three and finish up our sandwiches before we went on our way. Coming from the right (ahem) side of the river, I won't be going out of my way to visit Baxter in the future, but I'll sure point all of my eastern shore friends toward it and make a point to drop in whenever I am pulled eastward!

Communal tables mixing it with other stalls at the Brooke Street Pier. Coffee was tasty and interesting. Three different roasts available, the barista recommended an Ethiopian that was up to spec. Service was friendly and helpful. Update: second visit, I asked to try a new roast and the barista offered to make me a sample first to see if it was up to spec. I love you, darlings…read more I was temporarily working out of Brooke St Pier at the start of the year and it was such a blessing knowing that the reward of very good coffee was waiting for me at the end of my morning walk. I am so fond of the "perfect" size cup, and the small selection of baked items is amazingly tasty (if you're around early enough--they don't get replenished; once they're gone, they're gone!). I've had a few people ask me if the Bright Eyes coffee is any good, which is a ridiculous question if you know it's the younger sibling of Pilgrim Coffee. It's WONDERFUL. You can also use your Pilgrim loyalty stamp card at Bright Eyes (and vice versa) and Bright Eyes is open pretty much every day consistently, including public holidays (yet another blessing over the holiday season). I'm actually a little bit sad that work doesn't have me down Brooke Street's way more often, as I miss my regular Bright Eyes dates. No EFTPOS limit, short wait, papers to read while you do. Do not hesitate getting your own caffeine fix here.
