What started as a goal to buy beans, transformed into a unique educational experience complete with a cup of coffee and exceptional conversation. When I entered the shop, I was immediately greeted warmly by the owners, Rachael and Matthew. Rachael made me a delicous latte just for stopping in! Sensing my interest in the process of coffee roasting, Rachael gave me a personal tour of the company's roasting and production area. The company also fixes coffee machines. Matthew and Rachael continued with a tour of the workshop filled with machines and parts. Their knowledge of coffee and all aspects of production is very impressive. After having coffee at a number of fabulous restaurants in Hobart, I was amazed to discover that Tascaffe is the supplier for all of them. They roast and produce a diverse range of coffee blends unique to various establishments. I procured two bags of coffee beans including the strong Retro blend and Italiano for extremely reasonable prices. Such delicious coffee and so fun to learn the process behind the coffee. This proved to be a highlight of my trip to Tasmania.

Groups of tables and chairs divided by half walls which lower the noise and bench seats across one wall add extra comfort. Communal tables mixing it with other stalls at the Brooke Street Pier. Coffee was tasty and interesting. Three different roasts available, the barista recommended an Ethiopian that was up to spec. Service was friendly and helpful. Update: second visit, I asked to try a new roast and the barista offered to make me a sample first to see if it was up to spec. I love you, darlings…read more I was temporarily working out of Brooke St Pier at the start of the year and it was such a blessing knowing that the reward of very good coffee was waiting for me at the end of my morning walk. I am so fond of the "perfect" size cup, and the small selection of baked items is amazingly tasty (if you're around early enough--they don't get replenished; once they're gone, they're gone!). I've had a few people ask me if the Bright Eyes coffee is any good, which is a ridiculous question if you know it's the younger sibling of Pilgrim Coffee. It's WONDERFUL. You can also use your Pilgrim loyalty stamp card at Bright Eyes (and vice versa) and Bright Eyes is open pretty much every day consistently, including public holidays (yet another blessing over the holiday season). I'm actually a little bit sad that work doesn't have me down Brooke Street's way more often, as I miss my regular Bright Eyes dates. No EFTPOS limit, short wait, papers to read while you do. Do not hesitate getting your own caffeine fix here.

Not feeling terribly hungry, I opted for a slice of hummingbird cake ($7). After paying, I took a seat at one of the tables. I waited a good 10 minutes or so and my order wasn't ready yet. The cafe wasn't busy, so I headed up to the counter to check on it. I explained that I was in a rush as I needed to board the ferry soon. I got my slice of cake shortly after. I do wonder why they didn't just give me the cake at the counter since that was only thing I wanted. The hummingbird cake was pretty good. It has coconut shavings on top and the cake was fluffy. Satisfying enough to tie me over till dinner. While you may come here for the food, the views here are an extra bonus. From the cafe windows, there is a nice view of the Derwent River. There is even outside seating on the lawn if you would like to get a closer view. If you feel hungry while visiting the MONA or Moorilla Winery, the MONA Cafe is a decent option should you want something standard like a salad or just looking for coffee and a pastry. Otherwise, wait until you head back to Hobart to have a meal. Or if you really want to splurge, try The Source instead.

Well, retirement didn't suit them, so now they run Churros Cafe at the Island Markets. The paella is finished and ready to serve at 12 noon - and sometimes sells out soon after. After a few years of going here I still haven't eaten through their entire menu as I keep getting hung up on favourites, but I'll keep trying!
