The MONA Cafe is located on the top level of the Museum of Old and New Art. If you are looking for a casual dining option while visiting the MONA, this would be the place to eat. The menu here consists of typical cafe fare along with a nice selection of baked goods (including cake) and coffee. I had just finished touring the MONA, but still had some time before my ferry ride back to Hobart. Thus, I decided to head over to the cafe to grab a bite. Not feeling terribly hungry, I opted for a slice of hummingbird cake ($7). After paying, I took a seat at one of the tables. I waited a good 10 minutes or so and my order wasn't ready yet. The cafe wasn't busy, so I headed up to the counter to check on it. I explained that I was in a rush as I needed to board the ferry soon. I got my slice of cake shortly after. I do wonder why they didn't just give me the cake at the counter since that was only thing I wanted. The hummingbird cake was pretty good. It has coconut shavings on top and the cake was fluffy. Satisfying enough to tie me over till dinner. While you may come here for the food, the views here are an extra bonus. From the cafe windows, there is a nice view of the Derwent River. There is even outside seating on the lawn if you would like to get a closer view. If you feel hungry while visiting the MONA or Moorilla Winery, the MONA Cafe is a decent option should you want something standard like a salad or just looking for coffee and a pastry. Otherwise, wait until you head back to Hobart to have a meal. Or if you really want to splurge, try The Source instead. read more

So if you're visiting the MONA museum you should note that there weren't many food options nearby. The museum and the grounds are large so if you're hungry this is a decent option. Its got lovely views of the grounds as others have mentioned. Its got decent café type selection of items to even fit differing dietary needs/preferences. Granted the food here is a bit on the pricey side but honestly of the museum cafes I've visited in different places this is sort of the norm. its certainly worth stopping by even for a quick tea break to take in the views. read more

Given that you're paying good money to be at MONA all day, and they don't allow you to bring food in with you, the cafe is hard to avoid, and I tried to avoid it and failed, succumbing to hunger and paying up. It was pretty good though. The portions looked small, but were filling. I think it was the avocado on top of my rice cake that did it. The menu was reasonably interesting and wide-ranging, and you could get something to suit most diets. It isn't cheap, but wasn't absolutely crazy or anything. If you do find yourself trapped here, don't despair. read more

Lovely little cafe with some great take out or eat in options and some neat wines too. This place is on top of MONA just next to The Source restaurant. We were there in Jan 2016 and a little jazz concert was playing in the field nearby so you could take your food and set up shop right there, or you could eat in the cafe or outside on the thick wooden trunk seats. The food was OK, we only had something small and a glass of wine before heading up to The Source but worth stopping by after your trip through the museum. I've begrudgingly eaten at MONA's cafe a number of times when I've been out there, because with opening hours of 10am until 5pm and a general museum visit for me lasting between three and six hours, lunch is bound to fall in the middle of a visit. As of yesterday, I'm making an effort to stop saying "begrudgingly" and start actually looking forward to the opportunity of eating here. Why? Yesterday's mac & cheese knocked it out of the park, and the reuben sandwich I had on my previous trip out here was also pretty great. But seriously, that large serving of mac & cheese for $14 was worth it. Let's face it, the meals here are actually pretty delicious and very decently sized. There was a corned beef and potato salad calling my name yesterday had the mac & cheese not already stolen my heart, and if it hadn't been so incredible and filling I was very tempted by the dessert shelves as well. The coffee's also great (if regularly a bit on the slow side for delivery--though again yesterday defied the norm) and if you buy a MONA Keep Cup ($12 for a regular or $14 for a large) then your first hot bevvo is on the house. Also? On a beautiful sunny day there's nothing like pulling up a beanbag at one of the low tables and soaking up some rays with pals, discussing your hits and misses from the vault below before heading back in for round two. I wasn't overly hungry (especially after spending some considerable time acquainting myself with the MONA bar, but as per usual, I saw Mac and Cheese on the menu & had to go for it! Very decent sized serving, and so so tasty (with walnut crumb on top), I highly recommend it! Service was quick & friendly too :) It was that good I was too busy hoeing into it to even take a photo! Fun Fact - while we were waiting for the ferry back, there was a bridal party getting photos done in the cafe - the view out the window behind them was stunning! read more

Great selection of sweet (macaroons, tarts, scones) and savoury (BBQ chicken wraps, meatballs in brioche, pork banh mi) and drinks (Tassie wines). Go outside for the views if the weather permits or otherwise bring a friend to grab a lounge while you wait in line! read more

Delightful menu selection. Vegans as well as carnivores will be very satisfied. I had the broccoli quinoa salad-yum. Included haricot verde, avocado, cashews and radish. Lovely water views from all windows. Most seating is without backs. Sweet grassy area with tables, umbrellas and stools. I didn't have a sweet but they looked perfect. read more
