Super-cute cafe. Good tea, lattes, soup, salad, spinach-ricotta turnover, and mushroom burger. Well-informed, mellow music. Wifi.

While that good news for the owners and staff, unfortunately for the consumers business as usual isn't quite what it was 18 months ago. Let me explain. This used to be the absolute go to for breakfast/brunch with the kids on the weekend. Their breakfast menu is pretty inexpensive everything on it is only $10 until 11 am. That's pretty awesome, and definitely one of the better deals to be had anywhere. Add in a fully fenced in play area for the kids, and some pretty generous seating inside and you should have all the ingredients for a kick ass family friendly cafe. That was pre-Covid. What's emerged from the post Covid hospitality world is a shell of what it used to be. The menu has shrunk, The white staff are horribly inefficient, they don't know the menu, and the Coffee? Terrible. Ordered a long black with a side of cold milk, the milk was thick sludgy and full of grounds. My meal was tasteless and lacked seasoning, but unfortunately my partner asked for what should have been quite an easy change to her dish, and what was brought out didn't even resemble what she had asked for. It took two of the wait staff plus the cook to figure out what we meant by "meat on the side". While Red Square used to be a destination itself, now I'd only eat there if I was already at the Cambridge Centre for something already. What a letdown.

I had a breakfast burger that came with avocado dip instead of avocado, and on what looked like a tip-top seeded hamburger bun. No major complaints though, breakfast ordered before 11am is $9.95.

I had not packed a lunch so the tour guide brought us to Brighton's Best Bakehouse to pick up some food. This was one of the few eateries in the area as dining options are more limited outside of Hobart. Though I had been in Australia for several days, I had yet to eat a meat pie while on my trip. Considering the bakery has won some awards for their meat pies, it seemed fitting that this would be the first place that I did. There is a long list of different varieties of savory meat pies to choose from here. They also offer baked goods here if you are looking for something sweet instead. If you decide to dine in, there is a decent amount of seating. This spot has the feel of a roadside truck stop eatery. Decided to order a sausage roll and a meat pie which were quite inexpensive at under $8 for both items. And the size of these meat pastries were sizable. One would have sufficed for a light meal. The sausage in the sausage roll is reminiscent of the taste of Vienna sausage which I liked. The meat pie was enjoyable as well. It has a nice pie crust and the meat filling was flavorful. Considering the limited food options outside of Hobart, it seemed quite amazing to find some delicious Aussie meat pies at BBB that were filling and inexpensive. If you are in the area visiting Bonorong Wildlife Park, this is a nice place to pick up some food before visiting the park.

The menu here consists of typical cafe fare along with a nice selection of baked goods (including cake) and coffee. I had just finished touring the MONA, but still had some time before my ferry ride back to Hobart. Thus, I decided to head over to the cafe to grab a bite. Not feeling terribly hungry, I opted for a slice of hummingbird cake ($7). After paying, I took a seat at one of the tables. I waited a good 10 minutes or so and my order wasn't ready yet. The cafe wasn't busy, so I headed up to the counter to check on it. I explained that I was in a rush as I needed to board the ferry soon. I got my slice of cake shortly after. I do wonder why they didn't just give me the cake at the counter since that was only thing I wanted. The hummingbird cake was pretty good. It has coconut shavings on top and the cake was fluffy. Satisfying enough to tie me over till dinner. While you may come here for the food, the views here are an extra bonus. From the cafe windows, there is a nice view of the Derwent River. There is even outside seating on the lawn if you would like to get a closer view. If you feel hungry while visiting the MONA or Moorilla Winery, the MONA Cafe is a decent option should you want something standard like a salad or just looking for coffee and a pastry. Otherwise, wait until you head back to Hobart to have a meal. Or if you really want to splurge, try The Source instead.
