I am a very biased city dweller but I am also an…read moreadvocate of very good coffee, so with that in mind I deigned to cross the bridge in search of caffeine. Baxter is hidden up an alley across the road from Beastlands, and provides a small and sweet refuge from such a place. It also has a small selection of sweets in the cabinet AND toasted sammos available for purchase! My cubano filled the hole in my belly quite nicely, and was an extra treat as I wasn't expecting such a thing to be available--we were going to just have a coffee at Baxter and then find somewhere to eat, and the sandwiches solved that problem nicely. There's not a great deal of space to dine in (slash outside on the astroturf) but things weren't busy so it was easy for us to pull up a milk crate or three and finish up our sandwiches before we went on our way. Coming from the right (ahem) side of the river, I won't be going out of my way to visit Baxter in the future, but I'll sure point all of my eastern shore friends toward it and make a point to drop in whenever I am pulled eastward!

They know the regulars by name and can usually remember their usual orders- it's so nice, and I'm a city as small as Hobart I'm surprised more places don't make a conscious effort to do it. The retail section is always full, and they are super helpful with advice and suggestions to get the most from your home beans and gear. Nice selection of small cafe type meals as well- typically bagel sandwiches and muffins and biscuits. Highly recommended in every sense.

Terrific quality and consistency. The owners (Mark and Ruth, I think?) are delightful and very welcoming - particularly Mark. My favourites in the lunch menu are the crispy skin duck, scallops, and fish (usually Blue Eye Trevalla) and chips. everything is fresh and served with either seasonal vegetables or really fresh salad. And I mean fresh salad. There is nothing worse than going into a restaurant where the side salad is limp as if it's been sitting around in the fridge waiting for plating. I understand their speciality is breakfast which we haven't tried. But importantly they have great coffee too! Worth a visit.

When COVID shutdown hit, they offered milk/bread/eggs and other small groceries, which was handy as I lived nearby. Parking can sometimes be an issue, so be prepared to walk a bit during busier times. Coffee isn't the greatest, but I do give them points for consistency. It's always far too hot and a bit weak for my taste, asking for an extra shot definitely helps. Not the best coffee on the Eastern Shore, but certainly not the worst.
