My first trip to the Panaderia was in high school when our Spanish teacher from Oaxaca took our class here on a field trip. Although I've never been to Mexico, I will take my teacher's word for it that it is an authentic Mexican bakery. Regardless- the pastries are delicious! Not super-sweet, but always fresh and lots of variety. You pick the pastries from the cases "cafeteria style" with trays and tongs. The very first thing you notice when you enter is the scent of baked goods. That is enough to get you going! They keep bringing out trays of fresh breads and pastries every few minutes and there's a delicious smell accompanying them. It has been on my bookmarks for long and I finally got to visit it last weekend. This is the second panaderia in Lexington that I got to visit and so, I was familiar with the sweet treats and the method of picking them. We picked conchas, cakes, puff pastries, cookies, etc. Everything we picked was $1 - $2 each. They were all good. I like the puff pastries in particular. We were there with a group of friends and they were amazed by this place. They asked me how I found it and I was like "um, hello! I'm a Yelper!" We also got a strawberry Tres Leches cake for just $15. We got home and tasted it and it was one of the best we've had in Lexington. It was not soggy, not overly sweet but had so tasty. A Tamale vendor was just setting up outside when we left. There's also a restaurant next door that we did not go to as we'd already eaten at Ali Baba's. Now I know where to get my sweet tooth fix when I'm near this side of town. With such authentic, fresh, delicious treats at such low prices, it can't be beat. read more

I had spent a longgggg day binge-watching the Great British Bake Off & was craving some sweets. I was recommended to this place and it was not far from campus so I decided to try it. I could not be more impressed! From the moment you step in the door, the smell of baked goods overwhelms you. I knew it was going to be a great trip from there. I grabbed a tray and a pair of tongs and began to survey all the pastries. I ended up choosing 5 different ones. My order was under 5 dollars! I couldn't wait to try them until I got home. So, I know next to nothing about Mexican baked goods, so I feel pretty inadequate in assessing the quality of what I ate, or even describing what I ate for that matter. But what I can say is that this little bakery is clean and cute, with fabulous wooden cabinets piled high with all kinds of baked goods. It sort of boggled my mind. I got a ton of stuff to try, and my purchases easily filled a grocery bag, but cost only $4. Wow. At any rate, some of it was very good and some of it was not good at all. If I had to make a professional guess, I would say much of what is sold here is made from a mix-- the strawberry filling in the sweet strawberry empanada was was without a doubt made in a factory somewhere. But, this is not a gastronomical destination; this is a neighborhood panaderia, and I think it's doing a terrific job of being what it is: a great source for fun, affordable snacks to grab without breaking the bank. My only complaint is that most of the sweets are not labeled, so for an outsider like me, there was an awful lot of guesswork. I had no idea what I was getting into, but that was actually half the fun. There is also some breads here that are VERY much like Japanese meronpan, which was especially enjoyable since our little Japanese bakery folded last year. Anyhow, if you're in the neighborhood and need a little snack, this place is it. Also, they also sell very festive little birthday cakes and have an astonishing array of piñatas. Thai bakery is super awesome it's tucked in "little Mexico" side of town. From the outside this place seems pretty modest but once inside all the treats are waiting! This is a small-ish store in an area surrounded by places with Spanish names. The outside is not much but the inside's where it's at. I'm not a dessert person but my wife is. I like the sweet breads here because they are not sickeningly sweet. I also like the fact that there's coconut on top of a lot of the cakes. I'm something of a coconut fanatic and this quite reminded me of home. It's a little difficult to navigate and choose if there's a crowd inside but that is only because there are trolleys of racks with fresh baked breads in the middle of the store. So no complaints there. Friends who had accompanied us were shocked at the low prices. We juuuust might have brought new business to this bakery. We'll be back and so will our friends. read more

Birthday today and wanted to get my work some churros, instead of cupcakes. They had the churros and it was only until a coworker bit into one that I found out they had cream or jam filling, almost like a toaster strudel or a doughnut. I guess that is what makes this place unique. Growing up, I had just a churro, which was batter and sprinkled sugar. These went one step further. The portion size to the price was AMAZING. Panaderia Aguascalientes is heaven for someone like me who loves Mexican baked goods but has lamented the poor quality of the goods I have tasted since arriving in Kentucky. I mentioned this to someone who referred me to this panadería. It is fantastic! The walls of this panadería are lined with glass-fronted cases packed with every imaginable variety of pan dulce. I went a little hog wild, selecting FIVE different delights. (Don't judge me: I was in a trance.) Then, a baker rolled out a rack of freshly baked bolillos (like a sub roll), so I had to buy three of those, as well. The total charge for my eight-item extravagance? $6.90! I don't understand the math, but I don't really care. Mexican baked goods are unique. Not like any other style of baked goods. The sweet items are not quite as sweet as French or American pastry, and the variety of items is different. If you don't know what I am talking about, you owe it to yourself to give this place a try. This panadería does everything correctly, so it's a great place to learn. Be warned that the vast selection is tempting and you will end up buying more than you intended. The prices are low enough that it won't cost you an arm and a leg! This whole street looks like a little México. There's a supermarket, a tortillaria, a taqueria, a Mexican-style variety store, and a nightclub! I guess I have some exploring to do! read more

Panaderia Aguascalientes moved across the street from where they used to be -- almost right across from Tortilleria Y Taqueria Ramirez. I think their new location is nicer. The first thing you notice when you walk in are the glass-fronted cases with all the pan dulce and bolillos you'd expect from a panaderia. Some of my favorites include the conchas, empanadas, and the pastry "Tacos." The taco de queso is about the best thing there. You can (and will) get way more than you expect (enough to fill the bag), and you'll be out only like five bucks max. They have a selection of other cakes and flans, but they're more expensive. A friend of mine tried their tres leches and said it was to die for. I'll have to give it a try the next time I go. The ladies at the counter are always very polite and helpful, despite the language barrier. The only negative thing I have to say is that sometimes the bread and pastries don't seem to be the freshest. Maybe a day old sometimes? Still, it's hard to go wrong with Panaderia Aguascalientes. read more

I used to frequent the Mexican Bakery over near El Rancho Tapatio but they have closed. After asking around I was directed to Panadería Aguascalientes on the other side of town. No one knew the name, only the general location. I'm glad I went to the effort to find the place, even with dicey directions, because it's just what you want in a Mexican Bakery. I was looking for a tres leches cake for a birthday celebration and they had several, including the perfect one for my occasion, decorated sweetly with strawberries and at a very affordable price. Not being Spanish we didn't know what we were choosing but we filled our bag and didn't even get out of the parking lot and ate our goodies everything we picked was delicious and a total of $4.10!!
