The menu is obviously focused on Central America style food, but I was lured in after learning that among their Italian items is a meatball sandwich than includes a side of fries. The sandwich was good with four medium-sized meatballs, tangy rather plain tomato sauce, and melted cheese on a soft roll. Not as good as the gold standard meatballs, sauce, and bread at Mona Lisa in Little Italy, but passable. The fries were hot and crisp, which is a rarity these days having been served so many that were mushy, limp, and barely warm. In addition to ketchup, there is a tasty side of ranch. They serve beer, wine, and mixed drinks made with wine. The ambiance is very comfortable with authentic Central American decor. The service fast, friendly, and efficient. Their consistently excellent health inspection reports are a big plus. I'll be back to try their Salvadoran specialities.

Lots of indoor seating -- a simple, no‑frills spot -- but the food is where they really shine. We ordered the chicken tamale, carne asada pupusa, bean and cheese pupusa, and the plantain con frijoles y crema platter. Everything was delicious, and I would definitely come back. Service was a little slow, and they forgot one of our items at first, but they did bring it out eventually. Overall, a great first pupusa experience!

The food takes some time, but it is all made fresh to order. We tried a little bit of everything: the pupusa revueltas, chicken pupusa, yucca frita, plántanos, and the plantano empanadas. Their curtido is very good as well. The ambiance is very family friendly. They have many tables, for large and small parties. The rain may have caused some issues for them recently, as there were drying fans sitting out, and cardboard on the floor near the entryway. Update: it's been about one week now and I called this morning to place a takeout order. They said it would take only about 15 mins. We ordered 6 pupusas revueltas and a large Salvadoran horchata and our total was about $28.

My partner and I tried four different kinds (revuelta, chicharron, queso con jalapenos, and loroco). I had a to-go order, but I put on all the toppings at home and it was great. The curtido was nice and fresh, I wish I could just buy this alone and use it as a topping for so many things at home. The horchata was also delicious and not overly sweet. I liked the nutty taste of the seeds. The interior was well kept, clean, and felt very at home. I came in when no one else was there and my order was made fresh and the wait was not long. Cant wait to go back and try other menu items or pupusa fillings.

Washed it down with their Salvadorian Horchata. The Caldo de Pollo doesn't have any meat inside the soup, but the broth itself was simply delicious and fresh. Came with a lemon slice and it was perfect after squeezing it in there. The plate came with two pieces of fried chicken and it was cooked nicely. Loved the rice as well, it was like a pilaf. Jalapeno and cheese papusa was sooo good with the melty cheese and chopped fresh jalapeno. The horchata tasted deliciously housemade. Pretty big and a full restaurant during lunchtime on a Saturday. Service is very friendly. Food came out in about 10 minutes. Small parking lot but was lucky to get a spot. Will definitely be back!

These pupusas were so much better in taste and texture, although the spinach and cheese one was more on the salty side. The 3 pies were also very good. You have a choice for a pork, chicken, or a potato pie which we got one of each for our order. They were all good but I especially liked the chicken and potato ones. The chicken soup was very good. Good balanced amount of chicken and vegetables. Service was great. The server was helpful in helping us choose menu items. And she was good about checking on us during our visit.

I have a confession to make. The last time I ate here was when El Comal was on Mission Trail in…read morethat tiny little building with just a few table for diners before the disastrous fire destroyed El Comal 1.0. Since re-opening in their new location several years ago, I never ate there again (work schedule) though my wife and sons would take our out of town family to eat here often. This past Saturday, I was craving some really tasty pupusas and suggested to my wife we have an early dinner here before heading to Balboa Park-San Diego for an evening concert. We arrived around 1530 hours and honestly I was expecting that El Comal would be in that quiet period from just finishing their lunch service and prepping for their Saturday night dinner service. I was so wrong. The parking lot was full and when we walked in the place was full of happy customers. We were warmly greeted by a friendly hostess at the entrance desk who advised us there would be an approximate 10 minute wait for a table. We agreed and waited hungrily. We were soon seated and our server Brandon quickly took our beverage order: a frozen strawberry margarita ($11.00) and a soda (4.00) for me. We looked over all of the tempting items El Comal's menu offered but we finally settled on: 1-Taco Salad w/meat ($16.00); 1-#12 Combo (1-Chicken Enchilada & 1-Chile Relleno) $17.00; 2-Spinach & Cheese Pupusas $6.00 each ($12.00) Pre-Tax/Tip Sub-Total: $60.00 My wife tried her margarita: just by her initial expression, I could tell that El Comal's bartender was not stingy with the booze. Her cocktail was very tempting, and I will definitely have to order one the next time I'm here and not driving. One thing I observed is soda refills were never offered. A complimentary small basket of fried tortilla chips and a kinda watery, mild salsa was brought to our table. Despite the watery salsa, it still had nice flavor to it. Just wish it had a little more body to it. Soon our entrees arrived excep tfor the pupusas. I'm thinking to myself,"That's ok, I'll polish off my combo plate and then scarf down one of the pupusas, because that combo plate won't fill me up. My wife's taco salad was huge and very generous with all the fixings that went inside the salad. My cheese enchilada and chile relleno were very tasty. The accompanying refried beans and rice were equally good and I joined the clean plate club that afternoon. While the amount of food of the combo plate looks kind of small, it wasn't. Once I finished the combo plate, I was pretty full by tiem the pupusas arrived from the kitchen. I wanted to have a small taste so I ended up cutting one of the pupusas into quarters and my wife and I each savored one quarter. My wife has a cousin who dated a Salvadorean. She told us the pupusas and cabbage slaw here reminded her of her exe's grandmother who would offer "J" homemade pupusas with slaw which she always greatly enjoyed. We really appreciated Brandon's attention to detail whe he brought us a couple of to-go containers: he thoughtfully provided a small bag of that wonderful cabbage slaw and a small container of the sauce, both used for eating with the pupusas. I'm glad to see El Comal rose from the ashes and continue to present great service, hospitality coupled with great tastng food and cocktails in their present location. I promise to eat here more often moving forward.
