He was familiar with dysautonomia (POTs) and the type of care I would need. His staff followed through with the insurance to get the necessary medication approved for me. They also sent the referral I needed and the information required for me to be seen. Being chronically ill with mostly invisible disabilities and the fact that I am young typically make my medical experiences difficult. I will sometimes feel I have to prove I need help. Then, continue to make multiple follow-ups for basic care. That was not the case with Dr. Smith; he understood and started helping me immediately. This was the most seamless process I have experienced related to my complex care. When we left, I looked at my husband and asked if we really just got answers and a treatmentt visit. plan on my first. We were both so happy and grateful. The only thing that could be better is getting the portal information (website and login information) at the first appointment so I can confirm and communicate with the team any challenges with getting meds approved, etc. But that is so minor!! If you are looking for a cardiologist, I recommend Dr. Smith at Maui Cardiology. As a home health RN on Maui, I am so grateful that we have a provider like Dr. Smith here. I hope he never moves off the island!

My husband had been experiencing shortness of breath while walking over the past 3 weeks prior to surgery. My husband flew to Oahu and took a taxi to the Kaiser Moanalua ER on February 8, 2021. After describing his history and symptoms, the ER staff ordered an angiogram and my husband was diagnosed with multiple coronary blockages. Two days later, Feb. 10, Dr. Dorheim performed the surgery. Everything went like a dream. My husband flew back home to Hilo, 6 days later. I could not be with him because of COVID restrictions. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Dorheim from the bottom of my heart. You saved my husband's life. We think of what you did for our family every single day, several times a day. My experience at Maui Medical in Wailuku was very stressful and disappointing…read more I arrived for my scheduled appointment already feeling sick. All I wanted to do was check in, see my doctor, and get on with my day. Instead, I was told I had to speak with the billing department first about a previous bill and was told the bill would be sent to collections. When you make a medical appointment, you expect to check in and receive care, not be put under pressure to make a financial decision before you can move forward. I also have work responsibilities, and I do not have extra time to deal with unexpected billing issues when I arrive for a scheduled appointment. This experience made me feel as though I was being put in a trap. When you are already sick, being confronted with billing pressure can create anxiety, frustration, and even fear about going back to the doctor. It makes an already difficult situation even harder. I understand that bills need to be addressed, but patients deserve respectful communication, compassion, and a clear explanation of their options. Billing concerns should be handled professionally without making patients feel intimidated or discouraged from seeking medical care. I hope management takes this feedback seriously and improves how billing issues are handled. Patients should be able to arrive for an appointment and focus on their health without worrying about an upsetting confrontation before they even see their doctor.
