Having arrived in Lisbon in the afternoon, my wife and I were looking for a place for dinner -of course Portuguese- not too far from the apartment we had rented on the street of the Elevador de Bica. We came across Restaurante Palus, where at the beginning we were the only guests (Later many Portuguese-speaking guests came in.). Thus, the owner whose English was a bit better than our very rudimentary Portuguese, could help us with selecting what to eat. The first thing placed on our table was some bread with butter, a generous bowl of nicely marinated olives and an assortment of five cheeses of which we took two which proved to be very tasty. Then we were presented with a large plate of fish and seafood of which we selected three pieces of squid and one lenguada (sole/Seezunge) which we asked to be grilled and which were accompanied by some potatoes and a mixed salad. To go with our meal, we chose a very nice whole bottle of Vinho Verde. The food was tasty, the service quick and friendly and the total bill came to a modest EUR 29,25 (EUR 6,50 for the starters, EUR 14,75 for the two main courses together, EUR 8,00 for the wine). Not too bad a start for our week in Lisbon. We came back on our last day to buy some of the cheeses to take home to Germany - we were not charged more than what we would have paid in the shops. read more
