Old school German charm, fantastic food, and great service. The pork knuckle was some of the better pork I've had, and is enough food for two moderate appetites.

Great burger place in Heidelberg. A little slow and inattentive on the service, but the burgers are good. The fries were good, the sauces were good and the drinks were good. What can I say?

Efficient staff, good selections. Brat is amongst the best. Flavor and mouth feel - above many others. You would find it hard to find a bratwurst with no casing feel but held together this well after cooking. It had just the right browning and an interior so juicy you would think the Neckar river is going to shoot right out of it! The potatoes were moist but browned with a flavor that hinted that they could have been dry. The Pilsner house beer was amongst the best pils I've ever had, and since I hate pils and usually avoid it because I'm extremely sensitive to bitter(look up super taster), this speaks more volumes than a university about why you should also give their Pilsner a chance if you don't like it.

Good restaurant with good food and fair prices. Might be lots of tourists here but it's not touristy.

We had lunch here as part of our day trip to Heidelberg. It is hard to describe how interesting this place was. The front doors are a little challenging to maneuver thru, but it was with the effort. The ambience is not really like a thing I have seen. It gets darker as you get past the windows but we had a nice table with a view of the restaurant. We had a pastry dish that had meat in it that was cooked that way through the ages as to hide the meat on Friday's. (A religious reason) I had a beer with the meal and a small dessert of pudding with chocolate on it. I enjoyed the meal, although I could have been really hungry as well.

It is a pretty large restaurant with outdoor seating area as well. Stuff is friendly and service is pretty good. It serves predominantly German food.

    Awesome and awesome.

With only a few tables in the place you quickly make new friends and end up dining next to strangers. The weather was beautiful for sitting outside. I wish I had gotten our server's name because he was outstanding. Friendly, witty, and willing to help navigate the menu - he made our dining experience even better. We started with a couple of local wines that were amazing - a red and a rosé. Some bread and butter came to our table with our escargot starter and side salad. The bread and starter were delicious. Our snails were hot and garlicky with plenty of juice to sop up. The side salad was also very tasty and fresh. For our mains I went with the Schnitzelbank Platter and my lady went with the Pepper Schnitzel. My platter came with a local delicacy called saumagen, as well as roasted pork, sausage, roasted potatoes, and sauerkraut. The saumagen was the highlight for me. Our server was also excited we got it. It is a local offering consisting of various meats and other items wrapped up in a stomach and served as a loaf-style meat. The pepper schnitzel was also outstanding - the sauce was indeed peppery, but it didn't smother the schnitzel, which was breaded nicely and not dry, as some schnitzels can be. And after all that food, still, an apple strudel. This was so worth it. I don't even like sweets in the USA, but in Europe, they are something else. This was something else. We had a lot of great meals on our trip, but this was probably the best. Not just for the food, but for the overall experience, it's easy to see why this is the shining star in Heidelberg.

The women's/men's washrooms are clean (small, not handicapped friendly, but clean) all in all, this is a good restaurant and bar for German cuisine. What absolutely flabbergasted me was that the restaurant chooses to charge €4.20 for a glass of water, be hot or cold. It was explained to me that the water is treated with minerals, etc., etc. but basically it's just water. It was not served to me in a sealed bottle, just a glass. One needs to ask for ice as ice is not provided otherwise here. My friend who had requested hot water, said that it tasted like hot water from the tap, not even boiled water. I guess it's just a cultural difference because as all of us know from Japan, America, and most other places, water is complementary and the many cases there is no charge at all for a refill glass of water, but at this restaurant they do (see receipt) so my advice to you is if you do decide to dine at Lowenbrau Heidelberg, order any beverage other than water because the water seems to cost more than any other beverage on the menu!! If charging for a non-bottled water that is only served in a glass, I could understand €1-€2 but not €4.20!!! Absolutely ridiculous!! Other restaurants in Heidelberg where we have dined, do not charge such an exorbitant amount for simple water. I really do not understand how they can justify this. They should tell customers right away that there is a charge for water.(especially if it's just in a glass!!)

Walking in felt like stepping back in time. I doubt much has changed about this place in decades, and that's entirely a compliment. We were seated near a window and the ambiance was everything you'd want, cozy, warm, and genuinely inviting. I loved the feel of it. Our server was very kind. Her English was limited, but she was gracious and patient as I attempted to speak German, and was generous enough to tell me I did well. It added to the charm of the whole experience. Now, the food. The potatoes that came with the schnitzel were the best German potatoes I've ever had. The schnitzel itself was delicious, exactly what you'd hope for. The cheese spaetzle was a highlight as well, rich and satisfying. Plan on sharing it. The one miss was the pizza my sister-in-law ordered, which was fine but felt out of place.
