Schnitzelbank is the highest rated restaurant in Heidelberg, and with just cause. We lucked out coming here around 1430 HRS because we just missed the lunch rush and just beat the early dinner crowd. The weather was beautiful for sitting outside. I wish I had gotten our server's name because he was outstanding. Friendly, witty, and willing to help navigate the menu - he made our dining experience even better. We started with a couple of local wines that were amazing - a red and a rosé. Some bread and butter came to our table with our escargot starter and side salad. The bread and starter were delicious. Our snails were hot and garlicky with plenty of juice to sop up. The side salad was also very tasty and fresh. For our mains I went with the Schnitzelbank Platter and my lady went with the Pepper Schnitzel. My platter came with a local delicacy called saumagen, as well as roasted pork, sausage, roasted potatoes, and sauerkraut. The saumagen was the highlight for me. Our server was also excited we got it. It is a local offering consisting of various meats and other items wrapped up in a stomach and served as a loaf-style meat. The pepper schnitzel was also outstanding - the sauce was indeed peppery, but it didn't smother the schnitzel, which was breaded nicely and not dry, as some schnitzels can be. And after all that food, still, an apple strudel. This was so worth it. I don't even like sweets in the USA, but in Europe, they are something else. This was something else. We had a lot of great meals on our trip, but this was probably the best. Not just for the food, but for the overall experience, it's easy to see why this is the shining star in Heidelberg.
This place is small and packed - so make reservations!! We didn't but decided to wait - we found a spot at a table with 5 other people - that didn't know each other - this is common I think in Germany but it was a fun experience to add to the journey. We met some lovely people lol. In our tiny elbow to elbow booth. Anyway - tried schnitzel for the first time - it was okay. I can check that off... the sauerkraut was yummy, but the cabbage was way different than I was expecting. It was actually creamy... not my cup of tea. Portions are huge - sharable for sure. But the service and the restaurant was fun and charming. I would go back and try a different dish. :)
Customer service was excellent. They had both German and English menus making it accommodating for those of both languages. The food was well portioned and delicious! The ambiance of the restaurant was peaceful (we sat outside).
This is a very quaint compact local flavor type of place. We sat community style with two other groups, promoting a sense of community. The food was outstanding authentic German cuisine with a twist. The garlic Schnitzel is truly made for garlic lovers like me! The mushroom schnitzel had a flavor explosion when it hits your pallet. The wait staff was very friendly and accomodating, especially to Americans who don't speak German!
Thanks to Yelp for helping me find this little treasure. I went to order beer and was informed that it's a wine bar. But that wasn't a problem as I ordered a great red wine which Heidelberg is located in a wine district. I ordered a pretty standard schnitzel and had it with cabbage and salad and it was just amazing. The seating in this restaurant is a little bit tight, but I also realized in German culture. It's not a big deal to join a table with a bunch of other people and the Germans are more than friendly and welcoming. Prices were reasonable, and the staff was great great place to have a meal of authentic food and would highly recommend.
My sister and I had Lunch today. Great food, great service. Small restaurant with a great ambiance.
Small "classic" German restaurant which gets very busy during tourist season They used to accept reservations but I don't think they do anymore. We showed up when doors opened at 5pm and there were already 10 people waiting. We ended up sharing a table with a nice couple from Nebraska. Schnitzel is top quality. Default version is served with pan fried potatoes. The house special includes creamy spatzle and salad. There's a garlic version which is a little too garlicky for me. The turkey schnitzel comes with a mustard gravy. I didn't try it but the Nebraska folks loved it. For something different and delicious, get the Swabian pork tenderloin. Staff are all very friendly but a bit frenetic. I suppose they need to turn the tables.
This is a tiny dark place inside but it has a great ambiance. There is also outside seating if the weather permits. The schnitzel is good. This is a wine bar but I got a beer which was rather small by German standards. Service was good. I would eat there again.
First meal in Germany had to be schnitzel. Now that the trip is over, I can say this was easily one of the best meals we had the whole week! I enjoyed: Dry Reisling (tap) Pepper schnitzel (which came with salad) Portions are huge - we could have split one dish easily (although not sad we didn't). We ate outside, but the interior looks warm and fun for a low-lit evening bar adventure. Would definitely return if we find ourselves back in Heidelberg.
Great restaurant in old town. We showed up for an early dinner around 5 probably and glad we did because we took the last available table outside and then they were completely booked the entire night inside and the outside is on a first come first served basis and there were tons of people trying to eat here. I had the turkey schnitzel which isn't traditional but I don't eat pork so I'm glad they had this option. They also have a non breaded option. The food was huge so we could've shared one plate. Service was super friendly and pretty quick.
What an incredible experience from start to finish! Comfortable and interesting atmosphere, amazing service, great selection of wines, and absolutely delicious food. The pictures and reviews won't ever capture it. It's one of the places you have to experience and enjoy yourself. Will be back soon and definitely recommend to others.
Had the cordon bleu schnitzel with muenster cheese and spatzel, both delicious. The salads seemed overdressed but were very tasty. Note that this is a wine bar so soda options are limited. Lovely little "hole in the wall" place that I would easily recommend. Great ambiance and vibes, feels very non-touristy but they had an English menu. The service was excellent. They were both very attentive and friendly. It was a very nice way to top off our evening in Heidelburg.

The restaurant boasts an excellent ambiance with faithful historical restoration, evoking a distinct Cold War-era atmosphere. However, the dishes tend to be a little too salty for Chinese diners. Its handmade spätzle stands out from regular noodles: these egg noodles are flat, cut into short individual segments. All dishes come with extremely generous portions, and a single main course is more than enough to fully sate an adult read more

Like other great finds in Germany Schnitzelbank was a Yelp recommended find. Tucked into a side street off the main drag we found our way back to this hidden gem. With only a few tables in the place you quickly make new friends and end up dining next to strangers. We originally sat with a couple of local Germans and after they left a musician from the local college joined for her meal. Great schnitzel options here and true charm stood out for us. Would highly recommend this place to others in Heidelberg. read more

Tiny, quaint and rustic, Schnitzelbank hits the spot! I went for the three course, (created myself). Started with creamy tomato soup, which had chunks of tomatoes - really good! I ordered the special which was schnitzel with peppercorn sauce. It came with the starter salad which was delicious. We had a nice creamy Italian dressing and it was the most vegetables I got on my trip! Lastly, I got the schnitzel finished with the pepper corn sauce which was a great heart stopper. Great place! read more

Great stop for dinner! Come early as it's get full quickly! Tight little space lit by dim lights and candles on the table! Cool indoor space that you feel like you stepped into history! Outdoor space exist in the front and back too! So what do you expect for dinner here? Schnitzel of course! They have all types except chicken! Very large plates! As food is so good, most customers clean their plate! Grab a drink too to enjoy your dinner! Communal tables exist: so you may meet some friends too at dinner! Great company had at my table with individuals for Germany! I'll surely be back for more tastings.... read more

Amazing food. Everything delicious. The schnitzels are out of this world. Just be careful as each order is very large and comes with 2 schnitzel. The bartender and the servers are so nice. Highly recommended. Kitchen closes at 9. read more
We loved this place! Tucked in on a little side street, we sat outside on a summer evening, although the inside must be wonderful during the winter, as it's warm, cozy and inviting. The garlic schnitz was the sh*t, in the best possible way. It was flavorful, light and yummy. And they also give you a yummy side salad to go with it. If you are in Heidelberg, go! read more

Best Wienerschnitzel I have ever had. We arrived 5 minutes before opening and there was a line of about 10 couples. We shared a table in the bar with another couple and had a great time. Extremely glad we decided to go for dinner here. read more

1st visit - I ordered a plain schnitzel. The best schnitzel I had out of +10 occasions. Schnitzel was thin and crispy with just the right amount of meat without being rubbery. Both schnitzel and sides were very well seasoned. This location apparently opened in 1992, but the same restaurant started 300 years ago. Portion size - one order got me full Service - standard serving time. Servers and cook were very kind and friendly. Ambiance - small sitting available outside. Inside is antique and comfortable. Will come back alone, or with friends/family read more
Schnitzelbank is a small traditional German restaurant a very short walk off of the main shopping street. The interior dining room is very small, but that could be because it is filled with large tables that appear to be from an old woodworking shop. Although they add old world character, their size make it hard to get to your seat. It was a very nice afternoon so we decided to sit at the front "covid" patio (they do have a patio at the back of the dining room but it was full). Our waiter was very attentive and helpful. Since it was our last lunch in Germany I went with the wurst plate which had two very good sausages and some boiled potatoes. My vegetarian wife tried the Munster cheese slices in an onion and mushroom sauce, but she did not think it was that great. read more

Amazing dinner! Best schnitzel that we have had in Germany. Authentic old German atmosphere. Staff was extremely friendly and spoke English. Small restaurant so on rainy days make sure you get there right when they open because it fills up quickly. We got there at 5 and by 515 it was packed! read more
If you are looking for a really small, casual restaurant with good German food then this is the place for you. The restaurant is located in an Alley in Old Town; has no ambiance to speak of, is really a small bar with a few tables. They offer outdoor seating on picnic tables or indoor seating in a very tiny cramped space. They serve traditionally prepared Schnitzel in a variety of interesting sauces. The Schnitzel and Spaetzle are good (but not great). My favorite part of lunch was the ice cold Pilsner and the staff who are eager to please. This would not be my first choice but it is acceptable if you cannot find an alternative. read more

Best restaurant in the Heidelberg Altstadt. Best German cuisine in Heidelberg is here for sure. Portions are huge, so splitting between two people is definitely the move, both practically and financially. On top of housing incredibly good German cuisine, this place is also just so damn cozy. You have to share tables with other people because of how small it is, and I love that. Funny waiters, too. Reservations highly highly recommended. Couldn't get in on a weeknight with a party of 3 one time. Was great to finally go. read more

According to Mark Twain, onetime Heidelberg resident, "A banker is a fellow who lends his umbrella when the sun is shining and wants it back the minute it begins to rain." Schnitzelbankers are different. They never lend schnitzel because they know they will never get it back! Too delicious. We came to Schnitzelbank at 11 pm on Sunday when very few restaurants were open. And they were so warm and welcoming. We ordered a few different schnitzels (garlic and mushroom) and some nice Pfaltz white wine. Very solid German fare. The atmosphere was 100% medieval ale house. The service was outstanding. Impossible not to love this place. read more

What a gem! The absolute BEST meal on this trip. That included restaurants in Germany, London and Paris! I had a Gorgonzola Schnitzel that was out of this world. My wife and daughter had other Schnitzel variants and were equally pleased. The host/ waiter was really on his game and very attentive. Don't be put off by the entrance (this means you fellow Americans). Great old interior and family-style seating. Lots f fun and great food. Try it. read more
