Great outdoor patio. Small inside. Very warm inside if you're visiting after walking around outside. Server had a warm greeting and spoke great English. He was shocked that it was my husband's 50th birthday. We ordered the Apfel Strudel for dessert. He brought it with a lit tea light candle on the plate. Very cute. The food was amazing. I ordered the mushroom soup and potato pancakes. I almost ordered a second soup - it was so good. My husband's schnitzel was excellent. It was just what we wanted. Low-key, good and relaxing. Let me start with a good of this restaurant. The food is very tasty, the restaurant is cozy, clean. The ambience is nice and the staff are polite and efficient. The women's/men's washrooms are clean (small, not handicapped friendly, but clean) all in all, this is a good restaurant and bar for German cuisine. What absolutely flabbergasted me was that the restaurant chooses to charge €4.20 for a glass of water, be hot or cold. It was explained to me that the water is treated with minerals, etc., etc. but basically it's just water. It was not served to me in a sealed bottle, just a glass. One needs to ask for ice as ice is not provided otherwise here. My friend who had requested hot water, said that it tasted like hot water from the tap, not even boiled water. I guess it's just a cultural difference because as all of us know from Japan, America, and most other places, water is complementary and the many cases there is no charge at all for a refill glass of water, but at this restaurant they do (see receipt) so my advice to you is if you do decide to dine at Lowenbrau Heidelberg, order any beverage other than water because the water seems to cost more than any other beverage on the menu!! If charging for a non-bottled water that is only served in a glass, I could understand €1-€2 but not €4.20!!! Absolutely ridiculous!! Other restaurants in Heidelberg where we have dined, do not charge such an exorbitant amount for simple water. I really do not understand how they can justify this. Excellent choice. If you are in pedestrian zone in Heidelberg, this is a lovely spot for regional cuisine. Not only is the dining room traditional, the staff are friendly and capable. Like many other German restaurants, once you order they will leave you to yourself. If you want another drink or cuppa tea, flag them down. They are happy to assist. I had a lovely venison stew with spaetzle. The menu translates to "with cranberry sauce" but I think it's lingonberry. Either way it is delicious! My SO had paprika schnitzel and he very much enjoyed this one. It comes with a side of fries. Both meals are hearty and filling. A small salad would have complemented my meal to lighten it up. I had hoped for dessert but the one thing they offer I cannot eat. (sigh) I did get a nice Earl Gray tea and my SO had a Lowenbrau beer. It got very busy at lunch and phone calls for dinner reservations where coming in so if you plan to visit, maybe call ahead! read more

Letzten Freitag schlenderten wir die Hauptstraße in Heidelberg entlang und entschieden uns für das Restaurant Lowenbrau, in der Hoffnung, authentische deutsche Küche zu probieren - insbesondere Schweinshaxe und Sauerkraut. Was wir allerdings erlebten, hatte mit Gastfreundschaft wenig zu tun - und hinterließ bei uns einen sehr unangenehmen Nachgeschmack. Um ehrlich zu sein: Es roch stark nach einer unterschwelligen Form der Diskriminierung. Da in China das gemeinsame Essen und das Teilen von Gerichten sehr üblich ist, baten wir ganz selbstverständlich um ein paar zusätzliche Teller, damit jeder ein bisschen probieren kann. Die Antwort des Kellners? "Ein Teller kostet 1,50 Euro." Wie bitte? Nein, nicht ein zusätzlicher Gang oder eine Nachspeise - einfach nur ein leerer Teller. 1,50 Euro. Pro Stück. Wir fragten noch einmal nach, aber die Aussage blieb dieselbe - zusammen mit einem Blick, der sinngemäß wohl sagen wollte: "Ihr könnt euch das Essen leisten, aber nicht den Teller?" Nachdem wir das unseren Kollegen erzählten, die seit Jahren in Deutschland leben, waren auch sie sprachlos. So etwas sei ihnen noch nie untergekommen. Anscheinend handelt es sich hierbei nicht um eine deutsche Restaurantgepflogenheit - es sei denn, man spricht Chinesisch. Vielleicht betreibt das Restaurant nebenbei ein kleines Porzellan-Business? Eventuell wirft die Schweinshaxe einfach nicht genug ab, also muss der leere Teller zur Rettung herhalten. In jedem Fall eine bemerkenswerte Innovation im deutschen Gastgewerbe. Ironie beiseite - wir fühlten uns respektlos behandelt. Wir kamen mit Wertschätzung und Interesse für die deutsche Küche - und gingen mit dem Gefühl, nicht willkommen zu sein. Last Friday, while strolling down the main street of Heidelberg, Germany, we decided to try a restaurant called Lowenbrau, hoping to enjoy some authentic German cuisine--especially pork knuckle and sauerkraut. Unfortunately, the dining experience left a bitter taste far beyond the food itself. To our surprise, we were met with what felt like a subtle form of racial discrimination. In China, it's quite common to share food, so naturally, we asked for a few extra plates so everyone could try different dishes. The waiter's response? "Each plate costs €1.5." Excuse me? Yes, not an extra dish, not a portion--just a plain empty plate. €1.5. Per plate. We double-checked and were met with the same response, accompanied by a look that felt more like, "You can afford the food but not the plate?" After sharing this with colleagues who have lived in Germany for years, we learned that this is absolutely unheard of. Apparently, this "plate fee" isn't a standard German practice--unless, perhaps, you're speaking Chinese. Now, maybe this restaurant runs a secret side hustle selling plates. Perhaps pork knuckle alone isn't paying the bills, and charging for empty tableware is the new frontier in German culinary entrepreneurship. But jokes aside, this incident felt deeply disrespectful. We came with respect and curiosity for the local food, and left with a strong sense of exclusion. If you're looking for real German food without being nickel-and-dimed for basic decency, maybe try somewhere else--unless you're curious how much an empty plate is worth on Heidelberg's high street. read more

Located in the heart of the city of Heidelberg and Germany, we had a good experience here and our waiter Christian was super helpful. My husband ordered a pork knuckle plate which came with Sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. I ordered the farmers sausage plate which came with German sausages, wursts, German potato dumplings and sauerkraut. This touristy restaurant specializes in Bavarian specialties such as variety of schnitzel and similar meat heavy dishes. Lowenbrau is on tap of course, but they have other beer varieties available on tap and in bottles as well as small selection of local wines and spirits. Service is very friendly with English speaking staff, but they're so nice that they'll be patient if you attempt to use your (bad) German. Location is prime for people watching and proximity to all Heidelberg attractions with big seating area outside in the summer. Chicken schnitzel is fantastic and served with vegetables and French Fries. Overall, great for people watching, fresh bier, and very friendly staff. read more

They offer German cuisine and have a pretty varied menu. They offer everything from soups ( goulash, leek) and small plates (Toast Hawaii, baked Camembert with bread) to full meal - schnitzel, maultashen, schweinhexe and wurst. Prices were reasonable - small plates 6-8 euro and meals 9-15). The atmosphere was one of my favourites in town- I have lived here for about 8 years. It has a huge wood bar, sturdy wood tables, old iron light fixtures, and stained glass windows. It's a nice restaurant at the heart of a pretty Old Town. They have English menu which I really find convenient for travellers. A very courteous man named Lorenzo served us. I ordered for Schnitzel with mushroom. The sauce was a little bit salty for my taste but the pork cutlet was really big. Locals and tourists alike frequent Restaurant Löwenbräu Heidelberg, located on Hauptstrasse near Universitätsplatz. Love their dark draft beer served in the traditional Löwenbräu beer steins, which complements their German centric food fare. Have had quite a few of their menu items, all have been fantastic; one may even call comfort food. Inside one has a feeling of a cozy traditional German bar and restaurant offering individual or shared tables or dining at the bar. Outdoor seating is perfect for enjoying the weather and people watching the foot traffic on Hauptstrasse. Their menu is in both German and English; the staff is very friendly and conversant in multiple languages. read more
