Easily the best meal of my time in Germany. I had originally set my sights on the nearby Schnitzelbank, but scheduling didn't work out. In hindsight, I'm glad it didn't. Walking in felt like stepping back in time. I doubt much has changed about this place in decades, and that's entirely a compliment. We were seated near a window and the ambiance was everything you'd want, cozy, warm, and genuinely inviting. I loved the feel of it. Our server was very kind. Her English was limited, but she was gracious and patient as I attempted to speak German, and was generous enough to tell me I did well. It added to the charm of the whole experience. Now, the food. The potatoes that came with the schnitzel were the best German potatoes I've ever had. The schnitzel itself was delicious, exactly what you'd hope for. The cheese spaetzle was a highlight as well, rich and satisfying. Plan on sharing it. The one miss was the pizza my sister-in-law ordered, which was fine but felt out of place. Stick to the German classics and you won't be disappointed. Would love to return if I ever make it back to Heidelberg. read more

The dining room in the restaurant is super cozy and decorated with lamps made from musical instruments. The staff is very attentive. They check as appropriate and get what you need quickly. Our dinner was really good. We did have reservations. We even enjoyed some non-alcoholic beer. We had apple strudel for dessert, which was also really good. We were staying at the hotel, so just had to go upstairs after dinner. For the hotel - the only difficulty was the check in. We weren't sure where to go to check in. So we ended up asking the wait staff. We walked through the restaurant with our luggage to the the check in desk. Our room was comfortable and homey. The door required an old fashioned key to open. This may have been the best overall meal four of us had in Germany during the span of a week. Looking for a restaurant that specializes in a local Heidelberg specialty, Saumagen (large sausage using pig stomach as lining and cut into slices, then pan fried), we came upon this charming place. The decor is very heartwarming, with various instruments hanging everywhere and used as light fixtures. The color scheme and furniture exemplifies exactly what my image of a German tavern should be. Not my first, but one of my favorites. As for the food we sought out, it was spectacular. I was looking for an experience, but didn't necessarily believe that Saumagen would be so tasty. Crispy on the outside and meaty on the inside, with a nice snap coming from the pork stomach casing. Had a few bites with THE best sauerkraut I ever had, and boy was this fantastic. To me, the best two things of the night on one plate ... ... what more could I ask for. Well, how about a hamhock the size of two fists? The Schweinshaxe, though originated in Bavaria, was cured and roasted beautifully. Crispy skin and flavorful meat, not the largest one I have seen, but certainly one of the better ones I've had. Along with these items, we also had some Pfifferlinge (Golden Chanterelle Mushroom), which were in season. The small side of sautéed version and the creamy soup were both enjoyable. Last but not least, the Flammkuchen (originally from Alsace, but super popular in Germany) was a hit with the group. Btw, service was delightful due to a friendly waitress who we had great conversations with. Her bubbly personality really elevated the enjoyment of our evening and put a cherry on top. We had a great stay here. It was our first time to vacation in Germany and it was recommend we visit during Christmas to see the Christmas markets. We stayed 7 nights here and got upgraded to the suite however we didn't realize this till our departure since we had not seen any of the other rooms. They still use an actual key to lock and unlock the rooms so don't loose them. The only thing that wasn't most pleasant were the beds....however I feel like this is a common thing in Europe or just the places we say. Sleep-able just not the best. There is a restaurant attached and it was so yummy. The best potato soup in town I think!! A yummy breakfast is served daily to guests. They put your name on a table so it is ready when you come. We missed breakfast a few days with the time difference and I really felt like they expect guests to be at breakfast. We also had dinner here and it was great!! read more

I mean, well, this place is ok. If you are a tourist or don't know good german food well then this place works but it's really just "meh". Pricey considering the food quality but it's decent, I guess. Their schnitzel wasn't very good - I'd avoid it - it was very bland and the meat was a little chewy but it was edible. I gave it two stars because the desserts were very good. I had the chocolate ice cream and eierlikor (egg liquor) which was delicious. Person next to me had apfelstrudel and it was very good especially with the johannisbeer (red currants). It's a tourist place so it delivers what's expected. Quintessentially German, in the best way. Delicious beer, despite being a wine bar, delicious wine no doubt -because- of being a wine bar which is good, since we like both. It's far harder to get decent dry German wine in the States than good beer, so I wanted to sample what I could while it was available... and did, nuff said. If my neighboring diners' food tasted as good as it looked and smelled [I'd have ordered everything if there'd been a hope of eating a fraction of it, not even kidding] then it is little wonder they left smiling. My partner's meal, I can attest, was certainly excellent, with the meat and the red cabbage pairing beautifully and, I assume, the potatoes as well though those were somehow gone before I got a sample. For myself, I ordered the walnut blood sausage which -if you have the stomach for it- is particularly amazing. Fried up properly, it was utterly brilliant, with little crispy bits and the light crunch of cooked nuts, paired with fried apples that complemented the heavier flavor to perfection. I'd go to great lengths for another plate of it, honestly, and have bookmarked this spot for the next time I'm in the area. The waiter was excellent, and to his credit, patiently corrected my German, which was honestly appreciated, instead of just running over me in English, which he also spoke quite well. His recommendations were on point, and his dry humor good for a quiet laugh. read more

We LOVED Hackteufel! Getting there initially was a little confusing because it's also a restaurant (which has awesome food and customer service) and you need to walk past it to get to the hotel reservation area. The hotel/restaurant is very cute and traditional. Not some glamorous celebrity establishment, but absolutely perfect for diving into the culture and town. The customer service was amazing! So sweet, accommodating and speedy with requests. It's nice that there's only a few rooms too so it's not a busy/loud hotel. The location couldn't be any better. 2-15 minute walk to pretty much anything you want to do. It's in the heart of Heidelberg. There's no central AC but they do provide a fan and the windows open to different points to get outside air. We came in September so it was perfect weather especially at night. If you want to go to bed early it may be a little loud from the street but you'll be so tired from your adventures that you'll sleep through it easily. read more

Perfectly good food, but definitely a bit on the touristy side. The location is super convenient if you are in the altstadt, right off the main square and within sight of the pedestrian bridge over the Neckar, and if the weather is nice and you sit outside you'll have a lovely view. The food itself was standard German, nothing amazing but decent all around. The pfälzer bratwürste was a nice grilled brat with a small side salad, and the cheese dumpling (I can't recall he exact translation) was good, but not really what my wife had in mind. She was expecting something like a maultaschen, but it was actually a German-style bread dumpling (semmelknödel) with chunks of camembert (or similar) cheese in it. Also perfectly good though! All in all decent enough food, but you are paying Heidelberg prices, which are a bit higher than you would pay elsewhere for the same food. read more

A day later we had dinner here again. So we can recommend this restaurant on a 2-visit basis. It's an excellent family-owned hotel restaurant. The Scholl family does an superb job here for over 50 years. Need I say more? Food is very good. Prices are nice. Service is excellent. Location is close to the Neckar river. We had a FANTASTIC meal at Hackteufel in mid March. My fiancée had the Homemade Large Ravioli Suabian style and it was incredibly tasty. I went all out and had the Sauerkrauter Platter and it was beyond ridiculous. Delicious, truly and a lovely way to try a few offerings. It was huge and even with the help of my fiancée I didn't finish it all. We started with the Flatcake with bacon, cream and soft cheese and it was all sorts of wrong and delicious and probably the reason I couldn't finish my entrée. The interior was very cozy and the decor had a lovely musical theme. Our server was very friendly and worked nicely with our very limited German. OMG this place is excellent.. We arrived with no reservations on a Thursday night and were lucky to get in. The woman who got us a seat was our server and very good at what she did! We had the bacon, cream cheese flat bread for a starter. Wow was it good! For our dinners; - the blonde had a pork platter with spicy sausage and saurkraut. - I had the Roast Pork with red cabbage and a large dumpling. Wow the dinners were awesome... We hardly talked as we wolfed down the dinners that we got.. Well since everything else was so damn good, we figured we would try to Apple Strudel. Wow was it good... I don't think I have ever had apple strudel that was that good ever.. While we are visiting this part of Germany (from the US) we will definitely come back again before we return. We have been there twice, the first time only having wine outside, and the second time having dinner inside. The food we had was excellent (I had a lambhaxe and the wifey had a rumpsteak with horseradish and lingonberry, in both cases with very good fried potatoes) and the wine by the glass is highly recommended as well. For dessert we had chocolate ice cream and a half bottle of a fantastic, sweet Riesling auslese. The decor is kitschy but well executed. Interesting illustrations in the bathrooms. Apparently they run a small hotel as well; it's my goal to stay there next time we visit Heidelberg! read more

Berund, Brenda, Isabelle and others were so friendly and charming. Wine selection was impeccable. We had the pretzel appetizer with our wine. Delicious place and fantastic service. We arrived almost as soon as the place opened for dinner and without a reservation. The waitress was super nice. She spoke English, which was great, but the menu was in English anyway. My daughter, the vegan ordered and appetizer and the waitress right away told her what was vegan and what wasn't which was so nice, other places are almost like, " what you eat no meat? no eggs, no cheese?". Anyway, I ordered the ravioli stuffed with game and with mushrooms, it was one giant ravioli and it was delicious. The mushrooms were perfect and sauce....perfect. I tasted my daughters veal schnitzel, perfect and the spaetzle of my husband. I loved everything. No room for dessert. My vegan child was super happy with her salad. We had ordered some wine and talked about what we liked to the waitress. She was so sweet about it, we told her that we trusted her judgment but she insisted on having us try the wine first and it was a great suggestion. The atmosphere was very German and in a great place in the Old Town, down a cobble stone street around the corner from the church, near the bridge....sounds like every Old Town. What a gem, in the heart of Heidelberg. The location to start with is superb, in Altstadt, a few meters from Alte Brucke. We arrived after an accident with our car. The owner greeted us and really took good care of us. Our room was on the second floor. It had everything you need, including earplugs :) . But also free water and a bottle of local red wine. Much appreciated. The beds were very comfortable! Had a delicious dinner in the restaurant with local german Hausmanskost. Breakfast was super good! The owner was so kind as to help use pay the taxi (when we arrived, as we had no euro on us) The next morning she arranged for a car to pick us up to go to the airport in Frankfurt. We reserved this hotel by telephone from the United States, and there was some confusion about whether or not we had actually confirmed the room. They ended up emailing us the night before we were due to arrive and offered us the holiday suite for the same price as a regular room, which was super nice and generous. Just Okay. I went with a group and everybody was impressed with the meal they ordered -- I had the wild boar ragout. My issue with the place is that it lacks those normal things that traditional German restaurants always include with a 15-19 Euro meal: salads and breads. They just plop the meal in front of you like they do in an American restaurant and expect your whole party to clear out so they can seat a second group an hour later. The whole meal felt rushed. I guess that is what happens when you place a pretty good restaurant in the middle of the tourist capital of Germany knowing that most of your customers will be Americans or Asians. read more

Five stars is truly justified. We had pork schnitzel with local cheese and roasted potatoes as well as the pork tenderloin. Both were superb but the schnitzel won the day. I wish I had asked what the local cheeses were used because they made what seemed like a thin bechamel sauce but made with cheese that seemed close to brie. The pork tenderloin was cooked perfected and had a nice mushroom sauce. Had we not had the schnitzel we would still be raving about it. The atmosphere was great. We walked in on a busy Saturday evening but we were seated immediately. The waitress was extremely helpful and recommended a local whine the complemented the dishes very well: 2011 Philipp Kuhn, Grauer Burgunder (Pinot Blanc) Everything was going so well that we went ahead and ordered the apple strudel. I fear this was a mistake because I may never have an apple strudel as good ever again. They served it warm with some lightly sweetened whipped cream and a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream -both on the side. The ice cream clearly had an egg base and was as smooth symphony strings. The strudel had fresh apples as the center piece and just the right amount of crust. Do not consider dinning here. There is nothing to consider. There is only choosing when to go. read more
