I heard the place was under new ownership, and even though people had been saying the food quality was going downhill, I still wanted to give it a shot. Honestly, I was pretty disappointed. Two breakfast burritos came out to $29, which felt way too expensive for what we got. I get that prices have gone up, especially for eggs, but when I cut into the burrito, it was mostly potatoes. There was barely any meat, and I could hardly see any egg. And that was for both burritos. I've been coming here for years, so it's a bummer to say I won't be back. read more

I'd eaten there several times before unbeknownst to me they were under new ownership (About 3 months or so). Big difference of food quality. Besides too high of prices the food is mediocre. Got the worst menudo we have ever had from this place today. Normally it's really good. But it is so spicy it was inedible. There is no consistency at this place. Perhaps they will have pity on me.... And share this recipe. I love a good Chile Relleno. But I have never had one as good as the one at Palmas. It is a sheet-style, there is no soup-ey red sauce, and it is perfectly crispy with amazing cheese. It is also visually stunning with a sour cream sauce drizzle. I used to live in Salinas and take advantage of the fact that these were available to me whenever. Now that I live more than one hundred miles away, I wish I could get the recipe and make it myself. I found Las Palmas back in 2014 when I was going to Pinnacles once or twice a week and would randomly drive through Soledad on my way home to find a new restaurant. This was only after our long-time go-to La Fuente on Oak St. in Soledad let us down with rancid beans and an ever-increasingly ridiculously long wait time. At one point, I think we waited almost 2 hours to get our food at La Fuente! I love Palmas' rice and beans. They're always light and fresh tasting. And for whatever reason, their platillos salad accompaniment with shredded iceburg lettuce, half tomato slice, and squeeze of ranch dressing works really well in combination. Our favorite is their huarache, which isn't the same thing as what can be found at Watsonville's Friday afternoon farmers' market - sorry, huaraches (the food, not the shoe) are a relatively new discovery for me. The Palmas' version is massive and folded over like a quesadilla, not flat and open-faced like a stretched out sope, and not over fried. The masa they use is a perfect blend of slightly chewy on the outside and very tender overall. We get it with chicken and usually share with another order of food. Whatever cheese they use is delicious. We've also had their molcajete for two, after seeing another table order it during a visit a couple years ago. It's apparently very popular, and it's a lot of food! I liked most of the meat and the cheese was super yummy, but there was one meat I didn't like that I couldn't identify and I generally don't like cactus (it tastes bitter to me). On Mother's Day last year when we visited after a hike at Pinnacles, every table in the place had at least one, if not two or three molcajetes with plenty of fancy chavelas (some big beverage with beer bottles tipped over on holders - don't ask me to explain as I've never had one, but it seems to be a thing). There was one lone table that ordered a whole fried fish. On Friday, Jan 3, after another lovely hike at Pinnacles and noticing on our way in that La Fuente is apparently now closed forever, we stopped in at Palmas on our way out. We ordered their huarache platillo with pollo (you can order it a la carta) and a sope with asada (she said their chile verde was running super spicy, so I change my meat choice). The sope was a little tough for me, and he thought the asada lacked much flavor, but overall it was a perfect combination for the two of us with the huarache plate. Their chips and salsa were amazing on Friday. The Palmas ladies have always been very welcoming and friendly to me. It seems like such a simple thing, but I've been places where I have not been treated very well, likely due to my visible ethnicity and generally showing up after a long hike looking and smelling like I need a shower. They've increased their prices considerably since I found them back in 2014. If fact, their prices are more now than they were in the yelp menu photos from March 2019. If I lived in Soledad, I don't think I would go every week, because it would be too spendy for our budget. But for our now occasional visits to Pinnacles, they're perfect with friendly service and super tasty food. read more

We use to come here often, the food was good & service too. The last year and a half, it's gone downhill. Always dirty, prices are way too much for what they give you, and the service isn't good. I called to place an order, she said 20 minutes, I went around 25 minutes later & still ended up waiting 15 minutes more. To top it off, she charged me the same price for a super burrito as she did for a small burrito with rice and beans, when I asked why I was paying $10.99 for a super burrito and $10.99 for a rice and bean burrito, she said that's just what they charge. This is the second time we order to go and spend over 120 dollars; when we got our order 85% of the order was wrong. Order burritos and tacos for my young children without salsa but they got a cramp load of salsa in them. My other two orders were completely soggy. When we ordered they quoted us 30-45 minutes we went and we got our order after a hour and fifteen minutes. I get that you're busy but over an hour for food when quoted 30-45 minutes just so when my husband got home it was wrong. We called and they said we can go back for fresh food but the order will be over a hour to remake so we just said we want our money back which they agreed. My husband left as soon as I told him because not only does he need to go get our money back we need to go somewhere to get our kids food. Later we got a call back from the restaurant that we need to take the food back in order to get the money (keep in mind my husband left already and they didn't say that in our first phone call) I'm was over it and remembered why we stopped coming here and started driving to greenfield for a restaurant that has better service. read more

I once spent six days in Soledad. During that time, I ate some of the best Mexican food of my life. Rio Nexpa, Mariscos, Las Palmas, Frankies - you name it, I've been there at least three times (on this trip and others). I wasn't quite gutsy enough to brave the taco stand in Chualar (although mad props to the leader of our pack who did) but, trust me, my committment to finding the best Mexican food is solid. Las Palmas is the best of the best. Homemade corn tortillas. Not all thick and unpliable like Panchos in SF (sorry, still love you though Panchos!), but soft, malleable, and delicious. Good salsa (although I think Frankies might be a little bit ahead here), excellent chips. But unfreakingbelievable, whatcrackaretheyputtingintheseinthekitchen and pleasecanwetakeadetourthroughSoledad shrimp fajitas. Seriously, one of the best meals of my life. This is definitely a place we'd revisit. The price is average, what you would normally spend in this type of establishment. The food was great, it was flavorful, everything tasted freshly prepared and authentic. The only con for us was time (lunch time), it took a bit to get our order out, but the service was excellent. I came with a group and one of our customers suggested the place. The place is way off the freeway and you probably have to be a local to even know it's there. Tons of parking in the lot and plenty of room. We went during lunch time and was one of the first to arrive. I ordered a chicken,beef, and shrimp faijitas along with a enchilada and horchata. My drink was really small. For $1.75, San Jose has better quality and gives more. The food does take a while but I'm not sure if it was because we had 5 people at the table or I'm from San Jose and just impatient. The plate arrived nice, hot, and fresh with my corn tortilla. The food was salty and too oily for my liking and was dissapointed but my enchilada was pretty good. Just because I gave them two stars doesn't mean I wouldn't go back. Tried this restaurant for the first & last time today.. food was O.K. I think the only thing I liked was the corn tortillas. My food tasted as if it were just thrown in microwave to be warmed up. The service was not good. They had a high school girl & she was rude. She had friends there that she kept going to talk to while we were waiting to be helped. I'm assuming she's the owners daughter ? This place is nuts! I read about the huarache in the newspaper and decided I would give it a try. It did not disappoint. So much flavor in the not so little dish. The restaurant itself is small and intimate. Service is good, but knowing a little Spanish will help make things easier. The huarache is just so good! But it's so dangerously spicy too. It's so hot that I, a person who completed a spicy wing eating competition, asked for sour cream to cool down the spice. But it's still so good! I definitely suggest you try it out, but maybe ask for it to be mild, if you can't handle heat very well. It's a great stop in a small town. Come and try it out! read more

I've read the reviews on here, and I gotta say that the lower ones are exaggerating a little. The only downside to this place is that they need more waitresses, but come on: it's a family-owned restaurant. The mujeres making the food are awesome, and the waitresses I've gotten are always kind. I go there so much, especially because the people there are nice (the wait time isn't so much of a big deal). In addition, it's difficult to find a Mexican restaurant in the area where the tortillas are homemade. They have flour and corn tortillas! I'm a local but only since 2008. I love this place, it's my second favorite to LaFuente but for separate reasons. First the owners, their adult daughter, and the servers now know me by face. They know what I want before I say it. My absolute favorite dish is Tostada Ceviche de Camerone (A light, citrusy, tostada made with shrimp, cucumber, onion, tomatoes, and cilantro on top of a crispy tostada shell.) in hot weather, cold weather, it is simply to die for. Whoever they said they don't give free refills is incorrect as long as you get a fountain drink. The service is fast, efficient, and always friendly. They also prepare their chili rellanos with a crispy crust so yummy! It wasn't my first time visiting but it will be my last. Walking in, all the tables were dirty. no one could sit down AND the waitress wasnt tending to them so customers started walking out. I should have known then, but i ordered to go... The waitress, some high school girl with thick colored eyebrows, was rude and lacked customer service skills. She didnt greet anybody. She literally moved a table AWAY from another customer who was waiting for his to-go order so other customers could use it because she couldn't clean one of the other 5 tables that were dirty. Anyway Enchiladas were not authentic. The green chili sauce tasted like the canned las palmas enchilada sauce you buy at Food Co. The waitress gave attitude when we asked for chips and told us she didnt have any salsa to go... I left and went right back in and made her put salsa in a cup for me... I paid 30.00 for a burrito and an enchilada plate your giving me my salsa! BTW asada burrito was not worth 14.00, chips were ok, salsa was not fresh. Lastly, food took long. Be prepared to wait at least 25 mins for a to-go order. The only good thing that comes from this restaurant experience is your able to save youself a tip cause there's no need to give one. read more
