I have been here twice. The first time was my first time experiencing Caribbean food and the second was because I had to have it again! I loved the Beef Patty. It was spicy and addictive; I ended up dipping it in my curry. I went with the curry goat which was beautifully seasoned and had a great kick. I definitely have to mention the Mac and cheese because I believe it has made all other Mac and cheese obsolete to me. Food is mediocre at best. Always check your bag because the 2 out of 3 times I went, something was always left out. The attitudes at the counter make you not want to even bother with trying to correct it. I ordered food from here on 3 different occasions after a friend introduced me to the food(I'm Jamaican born and raised, I also lived in Brooklyn with lots of Island restaurants so I know island food). My first impression was "damnnnnn, this food is good" as I finished my friend's plate. I admit, it's not real Jamaican food type good but living in VA, it will do(island hut is good). Anyway, after my friend ordered it on Uber eats, I went there 3 diff times. I definitely think owners should b answering phone because the guy that answered today sounded annoyed as hell. I got off the phone n told my friend that whoever answered the phone sounded like he was wondering "why you can't cook at home?" Lol because he didn't want to be bothered at all. But hey, a lot of Jamaican restaurants are known for that impolite behavior (unless it's the owner answering and of course the owner is invested so they are usually kinder). Anyway I have been realizing a trend, the food was good the last 2 times so I can't complain about the 3rd time being salty a bit. What I will say is I have had diarrhea the last 2 times. I ordered the oxtail on doordash just yesterday, and it was amazing. Not too fatty. Tender. Full of gravy. The jerk is a little sweet for me, but it's still good. Tons of sauce. For anyone complaining about the service or them running out of food, (1) as a New Yorker, let me say from experience that you don't want to eat at any Jamaican spot that doesn't occasionally run out of everything except rice, and (2) those ladies are pretty nice. Nice & efficient staff. Not fancy, but clean (restroom, too!). Their Jamaican Patties are delicious!! Great flaky, yet crisp dough -- tried Beef, Spicy Beef and Chicken. My favorite is the Spicy Beef, goes well with a sweet tea. Cannot wait to return to try the ox tails (a tad difficult to eat while driving ;) !) and the curried veg dishes smelled divine! My friend and I were starving and wanted Jamaican food after Hampton's homecoming and decided Palm Tree was the best choice since it was right next door. The line was long but surprisingly they didn't take long. They had everything on the menu which (being Jamaican) is rare for a Jamaican restaurant. I ordered mannish wata and jerk chicken with cabbage, yellow yam, and plantains. My friend ordered curry chicken, but really wanted the stew peas , but she was unable to switch her order. The mannish wata was really good, they actually had a lot of food in the soup, which I don't really like, but either way I enjoyed it. I didn't have the jerk until I got home so the jerk turned out to be pretty good as well and overall I enjoyed my plate of food. The service wasn't terrible and the line went quick and we didn't wait an obnoxious time for our food. This was the only Jamaican spot I know in the area and it seem to be a popular one! Before I get into this review, it's important that I say I didn't try any of the food. I also want to state that it's important to acknowledge your customers. I'm from out of town and was looking for another Jamaican style restaurant since Island Hut had sold out of food early. Here's where the story begins, I walk in and there's a guy standing right near the entry way when you walk in, clowning and acting foolish for about 10 minutes making it hard for you to even reach the counter. Once that performance was over, the lady at the register seemed snobby with a slight attitude as I asked for the menu. There was maybe 2 people on the line. Now here's where it gets good because the lady ahead of us at the counter is ordering about 5 plates, she clearly should have ordered ahead of time instead of holding up the line. However, let's ignore that part and get right into the "we ran out" every time the lady asked for something. In my mind, I'm like what do you have, if every minute you keep saying "we ran out" to the lady ahead of us? So from there, I look at the side and it was barely any food there. I also didn't like how after waiting 25 minutes on a line they didn't even make announcements instead of having people wait for nothing. I also don't understand why they can't politely say, "I'll be with you shortly" when they see people waiting for so long on line and getting irritable. I come from the rudest place ever (New York City) and even service in New York would have been better than this place. I simply walked out with my husband and the lady gave me a side eye for doing so. My husband had an attitude because I had an attitude and we left in such a bad mood. I Never plan to go back to this place ever again. So unprofessional, and not very welcoming at all, plus they seem to love saying "We ran out" so chances are you won't be able to order what you want anyway because they ran out. read more

Curry goat is okay, oxtails are OKAY. Don't get the jerk chicken. Just don't waste your money. My food is NEVER ready when I get there, (I usually call 15 in advance but they tell you it'll take 10) this time I called 35 minutes in advance JUST IN CASE and it STILL WASNT READY. Considering the food is already cooked and all they have to do is put it in a container. They move EXTREMELY slow. If you're on a lunch break, don't expect to be back to work on time. Edit- I opened up my food and there was big fat HAIR in it. Great. So I called the restaurant because not only did they 1, take forever (but we knew that would happen) and TWO she swore there was no hair in the food as if I wasnt staring at it & SWORE they didnt take 35 minutes to make the food, I spoke to the manager and explained called at 6:11 and got there 6:45 and it still wasn't ready. She called me a liar as if I don't have a call log to where I can SEE I called at 6:11 and also to where I can SEE I made a phone call at 6:45 as I was walking in. She didn't want to give me my money back and would only do an exchange unless I drove all the way back there and gave them the plate to remake. Why would I eat here again? If you're looking for great Jamaican food, this is your spot. The food was delicious and the price was inexpensive! I had the medium size ox tail with the Mac & cheese and cabbage as my sides with plantains thrown in. The ox tail was so tender that it fell off the bone but definitely best to grab it with your hands and dig in. No reason to try to be propper and use the utensils! Thank me later. If you enjoy cabbage, get this. It was so tender with great flavor. Might be some of the best cabbage I've had outside of my grandma's kitchen. The Mac & cheese...I definitely enjoyed it but it'll depend on the kind of cheese you enjoy (not the cheesy kind and had sweet flavor). Plantains were enjoyed but not a must. This was my first time patronizing this restaurant and I was not impressed! I ordered Ox Tails (large) with two sides ( man and cheese & cabbage) and cornbread. They forgot to give me the cornbread, the mac & cheese was subpar, the cabbage was just OK and the Ox Tails were nothing to write home about. If the meat is not falling off the bone and I have to struggle to get the meat off, that's a problem. The best part of the meal was the plantains. Food is amazing! Their small plates are actually super sized. Great vegetarian options. I tried their curry Seitan with rice and peas and plantains, and honestly, the plate could last four days, but it was so, so, so good that I ate it all that night. Sometimes it gets busy and the staff can be a little harried, but other than that it's truly great authentic Jamaican food. This is unfortunately the most underwhelming caribbean food on the peninsula. I ordered the chicken curry with rice and sweet potatoes (which apparently are canned yams.) The chicken is extremely fatty and the rice was underseasoned. I grew up on caribbean food and there are far better purveyors of island food here in Hampton Roads. I am not sure what occurred with the billing. As soon as I used my credit card there, within minutes my bank called me and had to discontinue that credit card. I was on my way home from church (just moved to this area) and I asked the driver to stop at the Chinese place but his wife suggested the Jamaican place. As soon as i walked in I was greeted with a friendly hello and a smile. This is huge 4 me. I ordered ox tails, rice and beans and potato salad for sides, a side order of fried chicken wings, and a beef patty. (ok yeah I was hungry) The ox tails and rice were decent. I'm from Ct. and I go to a heavily populated jamaican area 4 food which is excellent, plus I'm a good cook and can make my own very well. Anyways the beef patty was good, it actually had meat in it which I have not got in a while. I was disappointed with the chicken wings cause they were only the sections for 6 dollars, and u got 6 pieces, I was expecting the whole wing. Went here a few months ago, for the first time in years, since way back when they were on King Street, where Jerk Sauce is now. I thought they were so-so when they were on King Street, and never went back. I used to go to the original Caribbean sports bar by HU, or Higher Heights in Norfolk, or MP Island Cafe in Norfolk or Denbigh. Still, I've never really had good Caribbean food like I used to get in DC, here in Hampton Roads, but I had a taste for it and was determined to find a local spot. In 2012, finding Jammin Jerk BBQ in Suffolk was a miracle. Before I got back, it closed, and the owner opened Norfolk's Island Krave, which purposefully serves an oxymoron - jerk that "isn't overtly spicy." I tried it once, in 2015. I'm done. In 2016, I tried a few places in Denbigh, to no avail. Could not find good jerk to save my life. Then, on a whim, (I was either looking for the other Caribbean spot right next to it in the HU shopping center that I used to go to or I was next door at Tropical Smoothie), I happened into Palm Tree's newish location in the HU shopping center. There was one other customer. The food was in heated pans behind glass, just like at the old spot. I talked to the lady and she said they had moved from King Street. This location seemed cleaner, more open. They have meals, and $5 small plates, with just meat and rice. I ordered jerk chicken and bbq chicken meals to go. Omg, Omg, omg! The best. The jerk was so spicy, and there were 3 options for the jerk sauce, each involving a fruit. Mango, tamarind, and I think pineapple. I had mango. It was soooo good. The bbq chicken was amazing also. The plantains were dry but that was my only complaint and it hardly mattered. I went back a few days later and got the jerk chicken again. ALSO. They have HOMEMADE juices. Sorrel and Irish Moss. I came here and got the jerk chicken lunch special which comes with two sides, I chose the macaroni and cheese with cabbage. It also comes with your choice of plantains or cornbread. I asked if I could could get cornbread, they said that they did not have any and I also asked for white meat and they said they were out of white meat. So, I got my food within a few minutes of ordering but the container they gave me would not close properly so I shut it the best way I could but it still spilled into the bag. The jerk chicken was good, very spicy like the worker said but the macaroni and cheese had too much pepper for my liking, however, the cabbage made up for that. I would try this place, again. Ok, so last year the wife and I went to Jamaica for our anniversary. The food was amazing. I never thought I would get it again unless we returned to Jamaica. Tonight we ate Palm Tree Caribbean. One word, AMAZING. We had three entries to share with our 9 and 12 year old. Jerk Pork, Oxtail, and Curry Goat. We didn't tell them what it was and they loved all three. We felt like we should have been sitting on a beach in Jamaica eating this fabulous food. The owner of this place has brought straight up Jamaican food to Hampton. It is definitely not Americanized. The Coco bread and cornbread were so good. A highlight for us was a memory of grabbing a pattie and heading out in Jamaica. We had the spicy beef, beef, and chicken pattie. Felt like we were back on the island. I would most certainly recommend this place if you want authentic Caribbean food. Will definitely be a regular from now on. read more
