I've been on a "find all the best street tacos in KC" kick and this was unexpectedly the best of the best. The carne asada and pastor street tacos were both moist and full of flavor, served generously on a double fresh corn tortilla. I spent my entire meal talking about how great everything was and how excited I am that one of the best tacos in KC is so close to my house. Already planning my next visit. This was so far off my radar that I didn't even think of taking a picture before digging in, so you'll see one of my tacos was already missing! I ordered one each of the carne asada and pastor street tacos and one chicken gordita. This way my first gordita ever and most definitely won't be my last. We also ordered the chips and salsa, which came with a flavorful (but a little too thin) red, mild salsa and one medium green salsa.

Stopped in for lunch. Don't let the older strip mall scare you off. The restaurant is brightly colored and clean with Spanish music playing overhead. Got three street tacos and an order of chips and salsa. The chips were thick, salty and crunchy and the green salsa had a nice bite. To be honest the red salsa was very thin and extremely bland. I would go for only green salsa next time. They had a huge menu for ice cream and desserts. I was full but would definitely recommend those based on the number of people I saw eating them!

We were very excited to read about a paleteria, a Mexican ice cream shop which usually sells simple food too, in the Northland. We've been there twice. They're located in an older, unassuming strip mall so there's plenty of parking. You walk into a brightly painted restaurant and there's several tables and chairs. There's menus on the walls that have pics of their frozen desserts and prices. On the counter up front, there are laminated menus for the food. You order at the register and they bring the food to you. Now, for the food. There food is quite good and it's authentic Mexican food. My husband ordered the menudo which was very good. It had a lot of meat and the flavor was of the broth was rich. It was spot on. We usually drive to KCK for menudo but we now have a restaurant that is 10 minutes away from our house! I got the crispy tacos and they were quite tasty. For dessert, we got the monarca sandwich. This is a piece of Mexican bread (a pastry) split in half with a sundae in the middle. Totally delicious. The bread was fresh and it had the perfect mix of ice cream, syrup, bananas, and strawberries. The prices are a little higher than what we normally pay, for this type of food, but not unreasonable. The big benefit is we can just drive 10 minutes and get some authentic Mexican food. We'll definitely be back. Food: 5/5 Facility: 4/5 Service: 4/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Value: 3/5

Another full fledged Mexican styled Paleteria in the Northland! There's really nothing better than a good Paleteria; I mean what's not to love about a place that offers tacos, elotes, fruity drinks, churros, ice cream and scores of other fabulous creations to eat, drink or lick. I'm thankful to have this place fairly close to my house but I was a bit disappointed in a few things as compared to other paleterias around the city. My steak torta was good size but was very skimpish on the meat and avocado. For $9 they could have provided a much heftier sandwich. The sandwich came with a small bag of chips and the worlds largest roasted jalapeno. For dessert I went wild and ordered the fruititacos. One of the most unique things I've ever had. Three tamarind candied tortillas topped with sliced strawberries, mango, pineapple, jicama, roasted peanuts, chamoy.... a wonderful treat. For spending $18, I received about 2 cents worth of hospitality. They really need to pick up the customer service! I truly hope they survive and I'll be giving them more opportunities simply because of the proximity and hoping the value on the other menu items are more in line with pricing.

Ordered the fruit cocktail! Crunchy fresh and delicious! You'll want to stop this place after a hot day to grab a refreshing snack! Tons of options! Lots of flavors! Will return to try more!

We tried the fried tacos and the Texaco burrito. The ground beef in the tacos had great flavor. The pork in the burrito was very tender. The burrito had more rice than pork, but it was super tasty! We will definitely return soon to try some of their other items!

We were thoroughly impressed by this place! It was super clean, well organized, the menu is well thought out with a LOT of choices, you can tell that the person that owns/opened this place really put their heart into it. The customer service was amazing as well. Now the food: let me tell you, this was the best Mexican restaurant we've eaten at in a long time. Possibly ever. Full of flavor, perfectly seasoned, authentic, perfect portion size. We had the Quesabirrias w/ consommé, churros w/ chocolate sauce, churro cheesecake, horchata, and pineapple mango agua frescas. The drinks were so delicious and full of flavor! I love horchata, but my partner got the pineapple mango one and it was so refreshing. I imagine it would really hit the spot on a hot summer day.

The service here is great! The woman at the front was so nice and helpful. The food is fresh, flavorful, and filling. By far my favorite Mexican food!

I get water from next door. I remember when they were building this place. Glad I came back when they opened up. Great food! Can't go wrong with Gorditas, Famous crunchy tacos, horchata, Shia freasca etc!!!! #1 spot to get Mexican in Gladstone,MO.

    Inside

This newish Mexican food restaurant is located in a strip mall on North Oak and just south of 72nd street on the west side at the intersection of North Oak and 70th, along with several other restaurants. La Monarca is bright and clean inside. They have a large menu and also feature a big choice of ice cream. I ordered the al pastor and pork street tacos. My wife ordered a burrito and my son ordered the gordita, which was interesting as it appear to be a fried or toasted pouch filled with chicken. The staff was very friendly. The food was very good. We had only two minor complaints. (1) our order for three took longer than we expected (as we were eating a later lunch and there were not many people in the restaurant); and (2) you have to order your sides separately. Just letting you know what to expect. We really hope this place does well.

The inside of the restaurant is classic industrial, cozy, super casual, and has a fun upbeat vibe. Everyone serving in the restaurant at all different levels is very kind and friendly. When we sat down, we were brought the typical basket of tortilla chips, along with their homemade salsa... And an extra surprise was there Mini bowl of queso dip. It was creamy and yummy. The salsa wasn't as spicy as we prefer, but it was decent. Our sever took our drink rider which were margaritas. They have a very long list of all types of flavors of margaritas... Are you in the mood, this is a place to go! They also offer three different sizes in the margaritas, plus a ton of other drinks as they have a very large bar. It was a Saturday night, so It was pretty crowded, but there was not a wait for a table. Our waitress brought back our margaritas, but it took her over 35 minutes to get to our table to even take our dinner order. At least they brought us three baskets of chips to hold us over! After a little over a half hour, she came back to our table and asked us if we were still waiting for our food... We explained to her that she never actually took our dinner order to begin with. We ordered street tacos and jalepeno cream cheese ans chicken enchiladas... black beans and rice. Everything was tasty. We were starving at this point because it was almost an hour when our food arrived. She apologized for forgetting about us in between the tables served before us... It was worth it... however, we will order for take out next time. Waiting at our table and having 30 min between a margarita and a meal was too long for our liking.

My wife ordered the chile relleno, but it had a lot more sauce than substance. The refried beans on the side were also pretty dry and didn't have much flavor. I wasn't really in the mood for Mexican food that night, so I ordered the chicken sandwich instead. It took about an extra 10 minutes for mine to come out after everyone else's. When it arrived, the chicken patty was about twice the size of the bun, which made it hard to eat, and it ended up being pretty dry and lacking flavor. We came in hoping to enjoy a fun evening celebrating a night out with friends, but overall the experience was a bit disappointing. I hope this feedback helps, because we'd love to see the food match the atmosphere and have a better experience if we visit again.

All that being said, I have watched the prices rise again and again and this trip was no different. I just can't believe the prices these days for very simple Mexican food. For example, the "special" today was 2 Chicken tacos for $8. No sides, just $4 per taco, as a "special?!" I didn't see what the normal price was, but surely it's under $5. $4 each for these pretty small/normal sized tacos is too much, esp with no rice or beans. Tariffs shouldn't be affecting margaritas much with basic ingredients. It's not like these are imported Italian sauce and noodles. It's meat, beans, rice, chips salsa for the most part. I don't understand the justification for these high prices. Everything on the menu, all lunch specials and daily specials, have gone up as far as I could see and are just too high for simple Mexican food in Gladstone. We definitely won't be coming as often as we used to. All of the food was good, chicken tacos, beans and cheese and fried ice cream, but nothing tastes as good when you're paying $50 for a small queso, 6 smallish tacos on "special", one order of rice and beans and a fried ice cream.

Arriving on a taco Tuesday at 6pm to an empty restaurant probably should have been my first clue, but at this point still hoping I was in on something good and everyone else was just missing out (very wrong). First, $5 for chips and salsa - not always fun to pay for chips and salsa when most places don't charge, but I understand it. However, chips were on the stale side and the salsa, while flavorful, was very mild and way over salted. We couldn't enjoy much of it. I asked the server about taco Tuesday specials featured directly on their website, had to ask the question a couple different times before she landed on telling me they got a new pay system and since the deal wasn't in the system, she couldn't honor the deal. She also seemed confused, so I didn't push further. Ordered waters (never received them), house margaritas (not too sweet, generous, and strong - pretty great marg!) and street tacos (chicken, pastor, asada - all incredible dry and under seasoned, didn't taste like they had marinated in anything, I was genuinely baffled by this). My tacos came out a full 10 minutes before my friend's tacos (same exact taco order - and I'll remind you we're still the only people in the restaurant...). We then watched our server get a little upset with the cook while pointing to our table, so there were some interesting, public communication issues among the staff. Finally, when the time came to pay, they presented their tap system, where the server was walked me through my items and processed it, quickly selecting the tip amount on my behalf me and finalizing it before I could say anything. I asked her about the tip, she pointed to show me how much it was, and I shared that I understand that but she selected it for me. She laughed, said thanks, walked away. I wasn't planning to return based on the food, but the forced tip amount at the end of a pretty bad dinner experience was what really changed the tone of my review. I love local Mexican spots and I hope they read this and make some changes to their service. NKC is growing and I'd hate for them to fall flat among the other competitors doing a little more for their customers.
