If you're in Kansas City, make sure to stop by Frutopia on Independence Ave -- this spot is a hidden gem! They're known for their refreshing ice cream and fruit-based treats, but don't sleep on the food -- it's seriously delicious. I tried the empanadas and sandwiches, which are all made fresh to order, and they were so good. The street tacos were some of the best I've had in the city, and their elote (my personal favorite) was perfectly seasoned and flavorful. I also got to try the ceviche, and it did not disappoint -- fresh and full of flavor! One treat you cannot miss is their Dubai Chocolate -- you can get it as a bar or over strawberries, and it's absolutely dreamy. Another fun detail: they have adorable popsicle carts that you can rent for parties -- and the best part is the cart rental is free with your purchase. Such a cute touch for events! The ice cream was great but the way my daughter was treated was awful. She's five years old and needed to go to the bathroom while we waited in line. When we got someone's attention to unlock it they denied her. No one spoke enough English to talk to about the matter. They lied and said both bathrooms were clogged and broken. ​where were they using it then??? We ended up here because our first choice was closed due to COVID, and man, did we make a great discovery on the northeast side. Snuggled up along Independence Avenue, where some of my favorite taco trucks love to haunt, you'll find Fruitopia, which is more than just cold summer treats. You want variety, you got it. Fruitopia has frozen options from the blah (I see you, orange) to the cross-culture (tamarind, anyone?) and a long list of fruity choices in between. Try a fruta, which is a fabulous blend of fruit and ice cream with a touch of crunch. Or go for a milkshake, and don't go too small. I've done the dulce de leche shake a couple of times and holy wow! It's just indescribably delicious, from the caramel syrup mixed in all the way to the cherry adorned on top. Parking is easy, prices are pretty standard (I don't think I've ever spent more than $20 for the fam), but it's the product that is difference. The only downside is the wait. Fruitopia is *not* quick, but they do deliver on that top-notch menu. Sometimes good things do come to those who wait! If you want authentic, you must run (not walk) to this delicious spot. I have tried the chicken, chorizo, and steak Tacos. Sometimes the onion is a bit much, but it doesn't ruin the fact that these tacos are legit. My favorite is the steak tacos. They come with cilantro and onion, sautéed onions on the side, a hot sauce, and a delicious verde sauce. I cannot get enough of the verde sauce. The store is clean, spacious, and bright. We sampled a smattering of their items- the mango tamarind smoothie, the fruit dulce de leche cup, fried bananas, and the elote (just sounded good). We loved the mango and dulce de leche cups. i've tried to go in for the past two weeks at least an hour before close and they're already closed. On Google Maps it says they close at 10 or 11 if you'd like to go you should probably go around eight because they always lock the doors at 8:30 and don't let anyone in and just stare at you. food is okay when I do go they usually get my order wrong. read more

I decided I've checked into the place quite a few times now that I can leave a proper review. I've tried various items from their fresh fruit, juices, cakes, ice cream to their food. We tried the chicken quesadilla for my daughter who didn't like that they were green tortillas so she wouldn't touch them, so I ate them and they were delicious. It comes with a side of guacamole which had zero flavor, however. We also tried the cubana which was extremely messy, the carne was thinner than the picture shown and the hot dogs were well over cooked with a rubbery texture to them. The cubana did have good flavor regardless. I've tried their detox and fruitmango juices which are made with fresh fruit and veggies in front of you and both taste great. They have a large selection of delicious ice creams and even have cute paper ice cream truck to put the kids scoop of ice cream in; my three year old loved it! We also tried their tres leches cake and a strawberry cheesecake CAKE! They usually have different varieties of slices to choose from. Last I was in (last week) it looked as though they are expanding the place for a larger sitting area. The place is always very clean and the staff always use sanitary gloves. As a visitor from California/Michigan and a dessert enthusiast, I always try to find legit Paleterias wherever I travel to or if they have any sort of Mexican Ice cream place. If they have them, great! If they don't, that's fine too. This place was recommended to me by one of the workers in the individuals who has lived in Kansas City and I was not let down at all. The environment is similar to other places and reminiscent to La Michoacana. It's very well lit, bright, and clean. I took one of my colleagues here and they were because they have never been to a place like this. The workers there were incredibly friendly and helped us out with deciding what to order. I felt like they gave us the royal treatment and has us try flavors you wouldn't normally find in mainstream ice cream places such as cactus, avocado and guava. Although my colleague found some of the flavors to be a surprise (yes, chamoy is sort of an acquired taste) they really enjoyed the ones they eventually selected (Mamey and Cajeta). We didn't try any of the other snacks so my rating is solely based on the ice cream and the experience. Door Dash has become my way of trying new restaurants when I'm by myself. Ordered some tonight and wow! Some of the best food I've had in a while! Blind ordering portion sizes are interesting sometimes - I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of food I received! Also, with door dash, I get a good sense of the integrity of the restaurant. Skimping or just the lack of attention to detail is obvious sometimes - because they don't have to be held accountable. I work at a nearby restaurant, so when I'm craving a fruit cocktail or ice cream, this is my go-to spot. I've tried their Mangoneada, which is Mango ice cream with Chamoy and a Tamarindo candy inside with Tajín and it's fantastic! You have the option of getting a "single" or "double" scoop but honestly, the single is HUGE! So unless you are really craving a HUGE cup of mango ice cream, I'd stick to the single because it's definitely plenty! They have a wide variety of ice cream, fruits and lots of food to choose from. Honestly, I stick to the fruits and ice cream but my friends have all tried their food and aside from their tortas that can be quite messy, everything looked great and they've said it tastes great as well. It's very affordable as well. Only thing is, they're ALWAYS busy so 9times oír of 10, you will probably have to wait in a fairly decent long line. Only once have I not had to wait.
