On the upper portion of the park is the actual walking trail, which is a really well worn out path and very easy to walk (though I wouldn't consider it accessible to those in wheelchairs, etc). There isn't really anything to *see* at the end... it just kind of ends... but then you turn around and walk back. Honestly, my dog was more than happy to explore the entirety either way. :) I do have to remove one star because their bathroom facilities aren't great. At the time of my visit, the women's restroom was completely clogged - and the men's room was basically a single stall. :-/ TL;DR Really enjoyable park and I'll definitely be back in the future.

There is a playground, a big gazebo right on the water, covered picnic tables, swinging benches, docks, a small "beach" area, and a gorgeous view all the way up and down the walking path! We parked on the East Bay Drive entrance (which has a very steep but short climb to view the bluffs). Please note the east entrance to the Bluff Trail has a limited number of parking spots with two porta-potty units instead of a full restroom. This is NOT the main entrance to the state park (which offers a larger parking lot and picnic benches). Although we did not have enough time to explore the other sections of the park or walk the full 1.3 miles of the Bluff Trail, I think the dramatic view of the drumlins with Lake Ontario in the background was more than worth the 1 hour drive from Penn Yan (on Keuka Lake) where we stayed for vacation. Another benefit of parking on the east end of the Bluff trail is that you have convenient walking access to Dragon View Beach (a popular spot to go swimming in the summer).

I parked where it said "daffodil meadow" since that sounded pretty sweet, and we ventured on into the woods. I had no idea it would be such a lovely hike alongside the Irondequoit Creek. We headed the wrong way on the red trail (I think?) and ended up intersecting with a few different trails along the way. The mud was minimal and there were very few other people on the trail the Friday I was there. With a few folks fishing along our hike, Freddy got some great people watching and chipmunk chasing in. I know now that there's a very popular fish hatchery. I didn't know what the situation would be with that during all things COVID, so we kept it simple and made a swift exit right after our sweaty hike. Picnic benches, grills, benches, grassy areas, and lots of parking. Putt putt golf, pickleball, playground, free military museum, and clean restrooms with showers. Wineries all around and some breweries too. South is Watkins glen and north is Geneva. Lots of options for things to do. Highly recommend visiting this beautiful park.

Sampson State Park set on the eastern shore of Seneca Lake. Today, roughly 2,000 acres of open space for mobile campers, tenters, and even fixed cabins for rent. Family friendly throughout the grounds. Boat launch, lakeside beach, play grounds, snack shop, game room, outdoor movie theatre and a Camp Store for replenishing camping needs and the ever popular S'mores refills. On-site, many former military roads and infrastructure during WWII Naval base, and Korean War Air Force base, including a Military Museum on-site built in the 1960's. We enjoyed a day walking and driving around the grounds and a good old fashioned picnic along the shore. Later an ice cream at one of the snack shops.

It was 1 mile each way (from the parking lot to near the base of the falls). The trail was relatively flat and shaded for parts of it (but not all). There were a few benches along the way to take breaks, and water at the beginning of the trail to fill up your water bottle. It costs $10/car to get into the state park but you can use that ticket to get into other state parks on the same day without paying again, which would be great to visit nearby Buttermilk Falls and other parks.

The highlight of the park - and its namesake - is Taughannock Falls, a 215-foot plunge waterfall. That's what we were there to see, but let me explain more about the park. The park crosses Taughannock Boulevard. On one side of the road, is the park of the park with lots of amenities: the marina, boat launches, a beach, a concession stand, bathrooms, a playground, and more. We were there on the morning of the Fourth of July, so lots of families were setting up for a fun day for the holiday: picnics, beach, boat day, etc. On the other side of Taughannock Boulevard is the waterfall and several trails. There is one parking lot by the trails, which was already full when arrived around 9am on Saturday, which was the Fourth of July, but we parked near the entrance on the other side of the park and walked over to the trail. There is signage requiring cars on Taughannock Boulevard to stop for pedestrians; it felt safe to cross. We took a little walk around the side of the park with the amenities, but we were there for the falls. We walked along the Gorge Trail - a .95 mile trail that is very flat. While not paved, it was a flat, wide dirt path, making it much more of a walk than a hike. Compared to other parks with falls in the area, it really doesn't feel like you're *in* a gorge, but you do walk along Taughannock Creek. But it's not quite as beautiful of a trail as some others in the area. But we were for the waterfall, which is incredible. It's worth a sweaty walk (it was a hot, hot day) to get to. We took a million pictures, watched the hawks flying over the falls, and took in the falls for as long as we could before heading back along the Gorge Trail. (Unlike other parks nearby, the Gorge Trail doesn't connect to the other trails, so you have to return on the same trail.) It might not be my favorite of the state parks we visited during our time in the Finger Lakes, but the waterfall is stunning and well worth a visit. It's also a great option for anyone who wants to visit a waterfall but isn't up for a more challenging hike, as the Gorge Trail is extremely flat and easy!

Due to irresponsible campers and a string of undesirable incidents that happened over this past summer the campground NY state has transferred to the village of Macedon. It will be a day-use only park. However, we are grateful to be one of the last overnight campers. It really is a wonderful park. The Butterfly trail is beautiful and easy loop. I highly recommend spending the day fishing, boating or pinicing.

We just guessed and went upstream based on other reviews we had read. If you go, water shoes might be best and plan on walking up the stream. If no water shoes, don't go after rains - it will be too muddy to make much of the walk and parts of the trail will be covered. Even on the best days you're doing some creek crossing at the waterfalls etc. long story short your feet will likely get wet here. All that said it offers wonderful views of a few waterfalls and a beautiful walk through a gorge. Definitely worth the trip!

It's most definitely dog and family friendly. Just be patient with parking, as it's a bit limited. There are plenty of benches on which to relax and take everything in and you can make your way down to the water and just let your mind wander. I look forward to returning to explore the other wooded trails.
