As many other unhappy customers have written: if I could leave a zero-star review, I would. I must recommend against doing business with this organization. My family rented a unit here for over a decade to store gear and equipment for our commercial fishing business. We used the autopay feature and website with no incident for many years. I manage the account for my family. When I legally changed my last name, I failed to update my debit card details via certified mail with Pak a Nut. Mind you, the bank card info remained identical, except for my last name. This inconsistency triggered a missed payment one month, and I didn't realize it right away because my email address was also out of date. I received a voicemail saying that I'd missed a payment and that a late fee was also due. When I called back to explain the situation and to settle up (no dispute on my end about the fee) and to simply update my account, I was served by an extremely belligerent agent. She immediately escalated the situation instead of helping to solve the issue. She labeled me a security threat when I expressed incredulity at not being able to easily rectify the situation over the phone. In addition, she immediately locked me out of online access to my account, where I would have been able to at least make a payment. She also restricted what had previously been our 24-7 site access to M-F 9-5 only and refused any form of monthly payment except in person, at the kiosk going forward. Apparently the company's infrastructure is so antiquated that account changes - like name changes and changes in contact email, must be made by certified mail only. However, the company's mailbox is frequently in a physical state that can't accept certified mail (locked, vandalized, or physically removed according to USPS) so I got several paid pieces of mail returned to me in the process of trying to update my account. Obviously, ultimately we just switched businesses to a place that is happy to work with customers who use contemporary conveniences like autopay. My first-hand experience with such poor treatment leads me to the conclusion that this company is not ethical and furthermore may be intentionally predatory. The unnecessary and artificial barriers they have created to successful solutions for commonplace hiccups is suspicious. Difficulties like this for a renter going through real trauma or hardship could result in serious financial and personal loss. Seized property would clearly directly benefit the owners of the storage units. While my family luckily wasn't in a vulnerable position, we decided to cease supporting an operation so prepared to bully and take advantage of their customers. After scanning reviews left by others, I anticipate a response from management saying there is no record of renting to someone with my name. I have no doubt that Pak a Nut has failed to update its records, based on my recent experience, outlined above. It is nearly impossible to do business with this company in a reasonable way. I do, on the other hand, have payment and communication records, and can share them with anyone who doubts the validity of my review. My records show that my family company paid Pak a Nut an average of 2k a year like clockwork, and I got treated like a criminal in exchange for having expectations of basic professionalism when managing our unit. As a lifelong blue-collar worker, I can say that I'm used to dealing with business owners and customer service folks who are a little rough around the edges. The fishing industry isn't populated with people who practice gentle communication. I'm well accustomed to this, however, I can say that my experience with this company was truly exceptional in its lack of civility. Whatcom residents deserve better. Storage Seeker Beware: use this facility ONLY if you meet the following criteria: 1. You live in near the facility FULL TIME and are unemployed, retired or otherwise engaged in pursuits that allow for the unlimited free time needed to only access your belongings from 9am-5pm Monday-Friday. The only "24 hours" advertised for this business is access to the sub-par on-site kiosk. 2. You plan to store your items forever and therefore need not perform the circus act necessary to give notice of intent to vacate which is purposefully cumbersome, confusing and designed to trigger a fee upon exit. 3. Are a digital ninja and have the time, savvy and interested in documenting every interaction, including but not limited to: recording of phone calls, documentation of all email strings, screen shoots of repeated harassment calls from owner and screen recordings of changes to the website that reflect policy changes in reaction to complaints. 4. Have the credit score, financial security and business acumen to not be phased by a collections threat which in our case, gave us the luxury of walking away from the nonsense unscathed. Pro tip for those currently dealing with this business owner, if you are in a dispute with her, it is possible she is in violation of the FDCPA act guidelines which prohibit businesses from turning people over to collections without due process. I also recommend reporting the owner's behavior to the Washington State Storage Association. Like previous reviewers, our family experienced all the shady behavior of this owner which I am happy to detail in a rebuttal if necessary. For those of you on the fence who might think those 5 star reviews are legit, I will share what I did with the owner when trying to have a reasonable conversation regarding her hair-trigger threats, given I am a digital marketing strategist with deep experience in reputation management: "Typically, I tell my clients that if the negative feedback you are getting online is consistent, then you are the problem. Had I been involved in the decision of where to store our belongings, we would not be in this position as I tend to do more research than my husband who handled the initial transaction...." In my professional experience (granted I work primarily with national brands and luxury clients) to garner a sub 3-star average review status across consumer platforms is the sign of an abject failure as a business to meet minimum criteria of best practices in customer service and other standard business operation expectations. Because I anticipate the 'cut and paste" response from the owner that "we have no record of (insert user name here) as a customer" I would like to clarify that as a family, my husband (Steve) and daughter both had rental contracts with this facility on behalf of our family who stored belongings in two units for approximately 7 and 15 months in 2023-24 respectively during a multi-state relocation which I have documentation of. read more

Fuck this place. i was patient as they jacked their rates on me from $60 to $155... I was even understanding when they informed me other customers complained of a rat infestation, which when I discovered they had gotten into my unit, the owners denied liability. When I was cussed out and hung up on after I complained their snow removal pile 4' of snow on my door (I was concerned of flooding since it was suppose to melt the following week), the owner again denied responsibility and reduced my access to the facility because I was unhappy with their "going above and beyond to remove the snow." since that happened, they sent an email saying I couldn't rent there (which is fine, I'm moving out anyway) and I suspect they will attempt to charge me another months rent since it was after the 20th. All of this after being a loyal customer for 12 years, giving them over $15,000. fuck these people who aren't even listed with the BBB. Addendum: if you look at all of the reviews, they naturally bask in the few high reviews and assume zero culpability in any criticism. If you want to do business with a facility who does not have a human being to assist you on premises, who does not answer their phones or return their messages, who refers to you to a website or their kiosk then this is the business for you. The person who responds to emails hides behind the Pak-A-Nut signature picker. What a coward! I would re-name this company F-A-Nut Storage. You should also be aware that this storage facility forces you to purchase a lock when renting from their kiosk even if you don't need or want one. Their kiosk dispatched 3 locks to me in which we were responsible to return 2 out of the three. The kiosk did not have paper to print contracts and a receipt even though you requested it. Don't even bother to ask for an exception for ANYTHING. They just hide behind their contract. Zero compassion and zero loyalty to existing customers. I got stuck renting a unit that I could not even put my belongings in because of the restricted ceiling height only to be told that I should have "asked to see it first". I was like-how could I see a unit at an unmanned facility??? They knew I needed to downsize from my 10x15 unit to a 10x10 and at no point was I offered the opportunity to see the unit before renting. Bottom line was I paid for 2 units for the month of Feb and only used one for part of the month (we moved our belongings to a storage facility with humans and for less money). read more

6 months ago I drove up to pak A nut and signed up on there kiosk, as I couldn't exactly figure it out, I asked a employee there (if have any) could of been Charlot the owner.. I told her exactly what I was doing and that I had a car that was being worked on and needed to be stored. Even had car at time of sign up. she never mentioned documents to sign to have car in unit, like she's mentioning now. even though she's manager and should have Informed. Yesterday get a call that they saw on video a car coming out of storage unit... and that I'm no longer to store vehicles (seeing others in units as driving by) I was curious and called only for her to say I was getting nasty for asking questions... at first I got excuses about how it needs to be in the lease holders name and couldn't be in brothers name, after I assured her it was mine she tells me still no cars in unit whatsoever.. (again Later learning you have to be approved at sing up which was never talked about or gone over) I said "ok that's kind of funny Ive never heard of that" next thing you know she snaps "ITS NOT FUNNY" and then cuts my gate access to Monday-Friday 9am-5pm and hangs up on me..(this is a business owner) lol. Obviously mad and confused on what just happen because I need my storage for work as well, I try calling back over 5 times and she refuses to answer. after going back and forth with her on email for hours I end up getting cancellations form and getting stuff out, on my second trip to grab all my tools I show up to unit at 4:55pm (as now she's cut my access to 5pm) it won't open, I call her and she puts me on hold and says there's difficulties she comes back on the phone at 5pm and says sorry you can't be on the property at 5pm even though she LOCKED ME OUT. I told her check your cameras because I was here before HER designated time she gave me. I could of been off properly before 5pm if she wouldn't have locked it, after waiting for a van to finally open gate I got out at 5:02 was in unit for 3 minutes. I get a email from her saying I trespassed and she's calling cops... NEVER WOULD OF TRESPASSED OR BEEN ON PROPERTY PAST 5pm IF WOUNDT HAVE LOCKED ME OUT. Also wanted to state as I have removed my car from unit, that was never problem I had with them. the car was out the SAME DAY I HEARD ABOUT THE RULES... the real problem with this business is the owner, who was the rudest, most power tripping women I've met, I know she will most likely rebuddle the statement from seeing the last bad review posts but take it from the other bad reviews and mine, there is a reason for all the negative comments, there's plenty of other storage units besides this one with better reviews I still had property in unit and she locked me out 5 min prior to the time she gave me! TL;DR do not rent a storage unit from these people, if you absolutely must at least read mine and others reviews to protect yourself in the process if you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of needing to use pak a nut (trying to find a storage unit in bellingham around the end of the school year?) heed the following warnings #1 piece of advice: PAY WITH YOUR CREDIT CARD. disputing the charge with your credit card company when they try and scam you into paying for extra months is much easier than small claims court 1. recognize that you're dealing with a hostile storage facility that is trying to take advantage of you 2. move all your stuff out and remove your lock BEFORE giving notice. if you give notice near the end of the month they will try and block access, change your gate code and make it extremely inconvenient for you to access your storage unit in attempt to make you pay for another month. They'll say something along the lines of "we need to meet you in person and can't do so until the 1st to assist you in accessing your storage unit". At this point you're paying for another month so don't fall for this like I did 3. there is probably always vacancy here, seemed like most of the units were without locks and this was right after western got out. If you call them and they tell you 'we have one storage unit left and we have a lot of interest, if you pay a $30 hold fee right now we'll save it for you' do not fall for it as I did pak a nut is a 'family run storage facility'. there are many terms to describe the kind of family operating it but I won't be using them because I want this review to stay on yelp. they're the kind of family that lives next door and will roll on over in their trucks with their dog and cousins to try and intimidate you if you come by demanding access during a month you already paid for and in the end the thing is even if you come out on top you'll feel greasy yourself just for having to deal with people like this, like do you really want to have to make legal threats just to get your stuff back? they probably make their money knowing most people will just pay for another month to move on with their lives read more

I called back after three days to confirm all was well, and the person who responded berated me for not sending my notification to the proper email address, indicating I will therefore be charged for March. I've been a customer for two years. There are some things i like (prevalent cameras, coded gate, 24-hour access, large clean unit) and one persistent, inappropriate behavior that's finally driven me out. They offer a low rate, then after you've moved in, they raise it multiple times throughout the year. At first it went up in increments of twenty, and then it reached forty. The price of our unit has more than doubled in just two years--but they're still renting units to new customers for the low price. I suspect they are hoping you'll default on payment so they can auction your belongings, because you wouldn't have a storage unit if you had a choice, and then they can replace you and repeat the process. She tried charging me $5000 for damages and when I proved to her that I knew she was overcharging me and that I have a lawyer the bill ended up at $108. We were very happy with the facility and our storage locker. It always felt safe and clean. We generally communicated via email with the owners and never had any communication issues. I have been a client of Pak-A-Nut for over a year and am super pleased with my unit, the service and - most importantly - the high security features they offer renters. Cameras, codes and owners on-site regularly is always good. I will recommend their facility to anyone I come in contact with looking to utilize storage. Sept 1, 2016....Whoa...update. I need to share with all of you would be renters - don't budget a cost and expect it to stay the same for a few months. They have jacked rental rates more than 6 times in a year and a half. And the owers do not keep their word. Beware! Update 2/9/17... In fairness, the rate was held and they did help out during a financial rough patch. As for being demanding... I, like most others, want to be assured they are getting what they agreed upon to begin with. If you call it demanding, then so be it. I call it holding business owners accountable. Before I could even put any of my things into the unit I spent 20 minutes clearing out spiders and their HUGE EGG SACKS WITH A TRILLION BABIES CRAWLING EVERYWHERE. Thank goodness for pak-a-nut providing a luxurious spider hotel with dead insects everywhere for them to thrive on. Earlier I had given a review prior to knowing that even tho I had not only called the end of July that we had vacated, but also answered their email to me on the 1st of August that we had moved out. I was assured by phone that day that all was good and that the email response was enough. Not one word that they had also took $135 from my checking account that same day. I would give this company 0 Stars if I had the ability to. These people are money-hungry, in-compassionate morons who will harass you or slap you with any extra fees possible. They charge you extra for moving out early, even if you've already paid through the end of the month. They charge you a fee to cut locks off of their units. Hell, they'll raise your rent on you every month. I've had multiple units in this place and had a bad experience each time. They have plenty of time to and will harass you and your family if you have any issues with them but can't respond for days at a time if you need help getting a light bulb fixed in your unit or anything else. When going through a bankruptcy, they told us that "society is falling apart because of people like you" as if going through bankruptcy wasn't a bad or stressful enough situation. They have zero sympathy or compassion and just want as much money from you as they can get away with. Spend more money to go to ANY other storage unit. It'll be worth not having to deal with these idiots. EDIT: Seeing as there are a million negative reviews and the comments from the owners are saying "NO, YOU'RE LYING," it seems like everyone that's left a review is "lying" instead of the owner just being a crazy woman. Just another one star to their collection. I'd like to start by saying this business is run by a petty child. I spoke to whoever on the phone upset about a $100 charge for them to clean my already clean unit. I told her I had more important bills to pay at the time then 100 bucks for them to clean nothing (not to mention I had the smallest unit) but I would still pay. She informed me all I needed to do was reply to their email saying I no longer needed the unit and so I did. So not even a week after the call I'm expecting to get the bill in the mail from pak a nut (I also was never late on my rent and always paid the amount due) and end up getting a call from collections saying I owe pak a nut the 150. Even after I informed her I would pay. Didn't even give me a week before sending me to collections. So if you go to this storage unit which I highly advise you not to do don't piss that lady off cause she will send you to collections no questions asked. I would only go here as a very last resort. Rented here twice over the past few years. First time rented over one year, friendly management, great security and access, reasonable rates. Second time rented, same owners, rude and self serving...raised rental fees twice without notice, claimed email was sent out and charged late fees and refused to adjust billing. Only to make a few extra bucks.There were times we would pay two or three months in advance. OTHER Times I was out of town or not in the area to pay on site machine. I was knowingly planning to pay late fee, Only to be sent nasty notice, charged extra fees because thier policy is to file a LIEN against your belongings after 15 days late! Which by the way I believe not legal. When we decided to give notice, and move out, only reason to get out and give our business to a company appreciated customers. We still had suff in the storage, while they kept asking if we we could be out early because they had a new customer. WOW, they had locked out our storage with a couple things left in it a day later. Had to call office and ask what was going on, replay was thought you were out ??? Wife told them we were staying till end of month...WE PAID FOR IT. I've been a customer of Pak-A-Nut during two different periods in the past 3+ years. I like the automated/kiosk system, the security, and the overall attractiveness of the site. However, I have some gripes: 1. BIG GRIPE. In my latest rental here as of just a couple of months ago, I was shocked that my rental rate was raised after my very first month!! To me, that just felt unethical and simply wrong even if it was legal. It most definitely was a slap in the face and left a displeasing taste in my mouth. And an email note to the manager did not resolve the issues (as she tried to justify the rate hike to me). For this reason alone, I will look elsewhere the next time around. Really, how about some reasonable grace period before the rates are hiked up. Otherwise, come on, it's almost laughable--and does not feel ethical to me. 2. MODERATE GRIPE: The 3 times that I have started a rental agreement with Pak-A-Nut over the past 3+ years, they always seem to want a "reservation fee". Over the phone, they presented this as being required; however, upon pressing Charlot that I was not looking for a reservation, but was looking to outright rent the unit and to initiate occupancy immediately, she seemed put-off and displeased that I was not eager to pay the "reservation fee" (even though I was not wanting to reserve it, but was wanting to simply pay for it). In the end, she conceded that she had no real grounds for collecting a "reservation fee" from me. And I proceeded to rent the unit. But it just felt like a seedy move that was distasteful to me. 3. MODERATE GRIPE: I have had multiple instances of people parked directly in front of my units such that, for example, I could not get my motorcycle out no matter how I tried to maneuver. Unacceptable. When I called Carlot that morning notifying her that I was in a rush to pick up my motorcycle for the weekend and that someone had parked directly in front of my unit--and then had left the facility--she suggested that they would likely return soon and that I should hold tight. As I witnessed my weekend fading away waiting for access to my motorcycle, I finally called Charlot back and suggested that perhaps a tow truck was in order. She immediately turned me down and clarified that no tow trucks would be called. I was simply out of luck, it seemed. In the end, the people did return and gain me access to my motorcycle by moving their vehicle, but by that point my trip was lost. To be honest, that was a major piss-off for me and I can still feel riled up when I recall the situation. 4. MINOR GRIPE. My last gripe, admittedly a minor one, is that there is absolutely no access to power. I've got enough extension chords to get me at least 150'; however, if you want to use your shop vac to clean the spider nests out of your unit, even if just upon occupancy, you better buy a portable generator. That'll be your best bet. Overall, this facility has some significant strengths in terms of its automation and overall feeling of order and cleanliness, but also has some serious detractions noted above that are cause for me personally to continue to search for other options. read more
