The first time I stayed with friends in Betty a couple years ago, and just a few nights ago I slept out under the stars at Betty's former campsite (Betty moved up the hill). I just have to mention that the little shower house (full bathroom) was just a few steps away from my campsite and it was clean and comfortable to use! Even though the main road is just on the other side of the berm, there is no traffic at night and so I enjoyed the crickets, silence, and warm night breeze. I fell asleep while gazing up at the Milky Way, swinging gently in my hammock. They have a couple of different campers that you can rent - I recently stayed in the Airstream trailer. The proprietor, Dani, was as sweet as can be. We spent some time with her one afternoon just sitting and chatting and hearing all of the local Terlingua gossip while she petted her 3-footed little Chihuahua, Buckwheat. Terlingua is an incredibly awesome and friendly town filled with beautiful picturesque views and old fallen down buildings at the same time. Everywhere we went, we struck up 10 minute conversations with most people and I just can't wait to go back. At night, the stars are AMAZING (especially at Retro Rents!) and provide an amazing back-drop while sitting around the campfire outside of the trailer - drinking, listening/playing music, etc. It's so very peaceful. If you are traveling with someone else and are worried about sharing a tiny little Airstream bathroom with this person - no fears! There is a separate/secluded bathroom just steps from the trailer with a full shower, toilet, etc. It's really everything you would ever need to escape from the realities of everyday life. HIGHLY recommend!!

It's not like this was the result of some historic storm event, just the kind of moderate winds that some should expect to experience almost every year out in the west Texas desert. So getting people to commit to these fragile accommodations months in advance without actually being able to provide the service isn't a good business model, and I don't recommend people booking this place when you'll risk finding you have no place to stay for your trip to Big Bend where there aren't any alternative accommodations you can book on the short notice that Basecamp gives you to tell you they canceled your reservation.

I watch the sun rises over the mountains every time I am there and it is always unlike anything I have ever seen. There is a sense of peace & escape from the busy hustle & bustle of city life. I am always able to gain perspective and be reminded of what is important. Cynta, the owner, is warm, funny, wise and SO helpful in sharing the history of the area and making recommendations of what spectacular adventures there are to be had in Big Bend National Park! Baxter is always there to great us with a tail-wag as well! The views from the outdoor daybed and the patio couch are AMAZING. We even decided to stay home one day rather than venture into the park, because we enjoyed relaxing there so much. I was worried about having to get ready for our elopement ceremony in the little bathroom, but it was so cozy and absolutely perfect. When we got back to the room after eloping/taking pictures, Cynta had decorated the room with flowers, towel swans and prosecco. I was absolutely not expecting anything like that and it was really touching that she went out of her way to do something special for us on our day. Cynta is an absolute angel! We also loved being able to walk to the Starlight Theatre for dinner! I could literally go on and on about the perks of this place. We can't wait to visit again soon and stay in the Main House with our family!

But there was a heavy rain two days before our trip so we were very lucky to be able to do this. The booking is very easy, receptionist always returns your call. And our tour guy is so funny and kept us entertained all day. We didn't have to do anything just sit back and enjoy the view, he does all the work for us. There are small rapids but nothing would rock the boat. Highly recommend this route since you are cruising through international river and one side is Mexico one side of the canyon is America. It's just amazing to see the canyon from the water and with changing scenery throughout the whole trip.

I have been traveling the world for over 30 years and have stayed in hundreds of budget…read moreaccommodations across four continents, including in developing countries. With that experience, I can honestly say this is the most "budget" place I have ever stayed at -- but unfortunately not in a positive sense. The room was extremely basic: two beds (one of them broken), a TV, a fire extinguisher (!), a sink, and a barely functioning toilet. That was essentially the entire furnishing. The windows were kept shut with wooden sticks, and the front door was so poorly fitted that it repeatedly blew open during the night, even when locked. The most serious issue, however, was cleanliness. There was a strong, persistent smell throughout the property -- a mix of damp basement and chemicals -- which caused us allergic reactions and remained in our clothes even weeks later, despite multiple washes. The room appeared not to have been properly cleaned for a long time, and we found several dead insects. After leaving, we also noticed live insects in our luggage, which we had not experienced before this stay. Unfortunately, the staff did not improve the experience. We did not feel welcome and there was no sense of hospitality. Interactions were distant and uninterested, and at times downright uncomfortable. There was no apparent willingness to assist or make our stay more pleasant, which is disappointing, as smiles and good service can often compensate for limited facilities. By contrast, one of my best stays ever was actually in a sleeping bag on a mat in a cave in the Tunisian desert, where it was the hosts, not the facilities, who made the experience truly memorable. We prepaid for a long stay, but after just one night, we decided to leave. Rather than returning, we chose to spend the rest of our vacation sleeping in our small rental car, which felt like the better, safer, and cleaner option. That decision probably says it all.

It's perfect for this type of trip, just a bunch of guys, on bikes, touring the area. On our second stay I brought my telescope to stargaze. That was very cool, plus we saw a coyote wondering by. That was also pretty cool. It's not for everybody but it's really good for us. The rooms were clean with a good location to hit Big Bend. I would be 3 for 3 but when I was planning this week's trip, I couldn't remember their name to make a reservation.

The Mariscal lets you see the sunrise every morning either from the bedroom window, patio, or fire pit area. The sun comes up over the Chisos Mountains (You can clearly see the Mule Ears from this spot) and it is absolutely amazing. The quiet and solitude of our stay was amazing and slightly eerie lol. It just took a day to get used to the quiet. The house is very small but has everything you need for 2 people: full kitchen, shower, outdoor grill, 2 TV's, wifi, etc. The firepit each night was my favorite part as I enjoyed a bourbon or 8 each night after hiking all day in Big Bend. The only issue is making sure you do NOT use GPS to get here. Follow the directions they send you or you will end up in the wrong location. The road up to the property is a little sketchy and rocky but you get used to it pretty quickly.
