This Ranch is a Hidden Gem in Terlingua Texas, we stayed for a night and absolutely loved it! we wanted a hotel close to Big Bend National Park, but while searching came across to Ten bits ranch, the location it's close to the park ( 20-25min), there is a county road that takes you to the cabins it can be a little rough for a two wheel drive vehicle but if you drive a 4x4 it's kind of fun! Once you get to the cabins you are overtaken by the beautiful Mountains view, each cabin has a theme, ( very lovely) our cabin faced to the mountains and gave us a scenery! The cabins are clean and very comfortable (for people like us who are used to the outdoors this was one of the best hiking accommodations we had ) although the water isn't drinkable they are kind enough to provide bottled water for you to use indoors. The room also has a coffee maker, microwave and a small fridge. We hiked to the cave across the ranch we followed the painted rocks as instructed and it was an easy climb. Thank you Mr.Cowboy for providing such a beautiful place to us to rent, we will definitely be back !

Visitors to Ten Bits Ranch who love the outdoors and care deeply about the environment (with the will to sacrifice some modern comforts to do right by Mother Earth) will find an amazing home base for their visit to the Big Bend area. Our family of 3 visited for 4 nights in early June of 2018, staying in the original General Store cabin, and would definitely stay here again if we could get one of the newer units. The Good: This remote lodging site is about 13 miles north of Study Butte, on the way into Terlingua as you come down from Alpine, with several cabins set out in the Chihuahuan Desert configured as a set from an old Western movie. During our visit, there were just 4 small wooden cabins with limited amenities available, but since then, the Ranch has expanded to add some additional more modern units (Delmonico's Steakhouse, Texas Hattery, Ten Bits Gazette and Courthouse) with adobe facades, better amenities, and best desert views. The entire property uses solar for power, wells, and collected rainwater, so guests will note some restrictions on HVAC and water usage. For example, we were asked to turn-off all electrical devices including A/C when we were not in the unit. From your front porch and shared locations around the 500-acre ranch, you'll have unbelievable views of the desert, mountains, and the infinite skies. Sunrise, sunset, night skies, and rolling storms are NOT to be missed here, so make it a point to include some sky and weather observation while you're here. Bring your telescope, and try to time your stay outside of full moons if you can help it. If you have the time and inclination, Ten Bits can even hook you up with horseback riding and ATV trips that begin right on the property. In our case, we had a full agenda of daily hiking in the parks (both Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park), so we didn't use these services at the ranch, but we did get a chance to pet the horses who were penned right behind our cabin. It's wonderful to have these options on-site to save driving all the way into Terlingua or the parks to do this elsewhere. If you bring your horses, mountain bikes, or other trail-safe vehicles, you'll have the opportunity to ride the trails on the Ranch and avoid the crowds on the trails in the parks. For relaxing after your active days, you'll have satellite cable TV and limited data Wifi (no streaming) to entertain you in your unit. The Good-to-know: Due to the Ranch's remote location down 2+ miles of dirt road, you will want to drive a high-clearance vehicle with 4WD or AWD, as sudden rains can make these road unpassable in a typical city car. If you are planning to drive into the parks, you should already be driving this type of vehicle. Anyone who has ever visited Big Bend knows that summers are BRUTAL in this part of the world, with daily temperatures in the desert regularly exceeding 110 degrees (F) for much of June through August. Visitors lodging anywhere with limited electricity such as Ten Bits Ranch need to be prepared for limited cooling in their units when the temperatures reach these heights. We found that our room got cool enough to sleep at night, but resting during the heat of the day (such as when we got out of the sun between morning and evening hikes) was difficult, as the unit could not cool down to less than 80 degrees. For this reason, I'd plan my next stay outside of the hottest summer months. Although this listing is categorized as "Bed & Breakfast," beware that the shared kitchen and dining space is pretty much "self serve" and the included food is limited to coffee, cereal, frozen waffles, etc., all of which you prepare for yourself. We traveled with tons of snacks and planned to eat major meals in Study Butte and Terlingua, so this was no problem for us. Other guests may do things like party loudly into the night or bring big dogs and not keep them leashed, etc. Property owners are not on site most of the time (or weren't during our visit), so there's really no way to enforce any sort of rules. YMMV and you have to hope that your temporary neighbors will behave like good neighbors who are sharing the property with other guests, unless you have a large enough party to rent out all units. We had to call one night to ask for help with loud neighbors who let their Rottweiler run free in common areas and that was stressful given our 5am wakeup to get on the road for a day of hiking in the parks before the heat became unbearable.

This is my second favorite place. It's like stepping back in time to the horse and buggy days. It is so cute to see the names of the rooms outfits to a theme on the outside. Like the bank, cantina, sheriffs posse & jail, prospector hotel etc. Literally I could of strolled up on a horse and fit right in. They are on rain water system-non potable water and solar power. No issues here all than like a champ. Views are spectacular, evening sunset and sunrise breath taking. They are building larger rooms that have more of an Adobe look rather than keeping to the country cowboy theme. Wish they had stuck with that. This is my kinda place so stay. No cell service so hook up to the WiFi! Found that info a day later The cantina has Continental breakfast, self serve. Was not thrilled on it, as it consisted of cereal, all loaded with sugar. Oatmeal packets and bagels. Oh, breakfast bars too. Now it did haves full kitchen but as I was expecting a Continental breakfast, I didn't plan for cooking. Items were to be marked XB, indicating shareable items which I didn't find but one box of graham crackers labeled XB. They were stale. Shared fridge but again didn't know what was for use or not. Almost helped myself to making Bacon but opt'd not to. Found pancake mix but e were in the go so no cooking. Be nice to thoroughly have items marked. Since there were 8 of us, and leaving for the day we all took two bottles of water. Felt bad but it was complimentary. Thks! I searched for extra cases of water to refill their station fridge but didn't find much of anything. Please have extra stuff for guests, even if locked and only our coordinator has access would have been great. I was willing to restock anything for the one other guests we saw. Upon leaving we left bread, peanut butter, crackers, apples and oranges all marked shareable. Gotta pay it forward Road access was something to be desired. Make sure you have anything higher than a standard vehicle. I get it, the grade can change with the rain. We found it humerus as we nearly fell out of our seats bouncing around and I was not coming or going on that road after dark! All in all, I'll be a repeat customer.

What should have been a nice little weekend getaway, turned into a very bad experience! Now views and sites were great, but had I known how we would be treated by the owners Sis & Keith, never would I have stayed here. Like Keith wrote to me and I quote: "There are many other places to stay in Big Bend that may be able to make your group happy. Ten Bits Ranch is not a good fit. Please do not stay at our ranch again." This after I notified them that my "new" room had no water pressure & the trickle of water that was coming out was streaming hot! We had to shower next door at our neighbors' room! I also walked into a conversation he was having with our friends and he was very rude and condescending saying "yeah, that wouldn't be a good thing because I'd have all of you out of here tonight!" We had over 11 rooms rented for a 2-night stay, that's 22 couples; and he has the audacity to be upset at us for something that was "HIS" responsibility as an owner. Don't let the views fool you, you can see those same views at another location that will treat you with respect and actually welcomes their paying guest. Please do not spend your money at Ten Bits Ranch, owner doesn't want anyone there by his comments. Don't want to believe our story, keep reading all the reviews, seems he's got a "chip on his shoulder" and does this a lot! To the elderly, to pregnant women; see his pattern, not once did he try to speak to us when our husbands were around; he is a chauvinist - - - !

A beautiful spot to stay and unwind from the craziness of day to day life. It's nearly off the grid. My husband and I took our son to Big Bend and stayed here for a few days. We stayed in the Gazette and it was perfect for us. There is plenty to explore and see just on the ranch. It's nearby to Terlingua and Big Bend as well. Beautiful nights spent at the campfire surrounded by a sky full of stars is just what we needed. Plus, the views ain't that bad. We can't wait to go back!
We had an amazing stay. We booked two nights in the school house room. We enjoyed both evenings on the back porch watching the sunset on our rocking chairs. The view was amazing. The room was a great size and very clean. The bed was quite comfortable as well. We really just had a nice relaxing stay and would recommend Ten Bits Ranch to anyone looking to stay in the area. read more

Amazing location with amazing views. The roadway in by itself is an amazing adventure. There's multiple western town themed cabins you could stay at. We stayed at the bank which had two king-size comfortable beds, ice cold air conditioning and a beautiful big bathroom. Our front porch there were gorgeous views of the Valley Gorge through the Desert Mountains. They offer a free Continental style breakfast as part of your stay. Right across the street from the cabins on their property still is a hike up the mountain to the Native American cave. This is an amazing place to go and the only regret we have is that we didn't stay longer. read more

We stayed 3 nights at The Barbershop and one night at The Bathhouse (We thought the pool would be fun to try for a night). The second night my girlfriend woke up to 7 bug bites on her arm and back. We check the bed and found no bugs, but we kindly notified Sis asking for new sheets. The next night, my girlfriend woke up with more bites and found blood dots on her pillow. We texted Sis again with pictures of the blood and she said she "Very sorry. We will address this immediately." We packed up our stuff and went on a hike. When we got back we saw new lodgers entering the room we had bed bugs in. The owners did not seemed concerned with the seriousness of the situation. We had to bag up all our belongings and even through some things away in order to keep possible bed bugs from entering our home. It's been extremely overwhelming and draining. It honestly ruined the end of our trip. It is very upsetting to see that our concerns were not taken seriously and others can be affected by their lack of initiative to deal with the issue. It's sad because the place is so beautiful. Some of the blankets smelt mildewy, but I could deal with that for the location. I cannot deal with the treatment we received. read more

This place was a lot of fun. My friend and I took a trip to hike Big Bend and stayed here for two nights before going to Marfa. The little houses are well appointed and the place is very peaceful. There's a generously appointed central kitchen where you can grab and go coffee, tea, breakfast, and some snacks. One thing to keep in mind -- this place is remote! From the highway, you drive down an unpaved road for about 15-20 mins because you must go slow. It's part of the experience but keep that in mind especially with time of day. At night it is completely pitch dark. read more

Super cute place. Unfortunately, crawling into bed at midnight and finding dirty sheets, blanket, and comforter covered in dirt and lots of different types of hair made my skin crawl. Most of our towels were also dirty and stained. Called Sis in the a.m. and she said I am sorry and had someone there within the hour. Not so nice that we had to sleep on the mattress pad with no bedding. Please train your staff on how to clean the room and change the sheets, and not just remake the bed with used sheets. What a health hazard to someone that is immune compromised. read more

We found Ten bits to be the perfect place to stay. From the moment we arrived at 10 Bits Ranch, we were enveloped in the authentic charm of Terlingua. The lodgings seamlessly blend modern comforts with the rustic allure of the desert, creating an ambiance that's both relaxing and invigorating. The views of the vast landscapes during the day and the stunning stargazing opportunities at night were simply breathtaking. The owners went above and beyond to ensure our stay was memorable. An ideal base for exploring Big Bend National Park and the rich history of Terlingua. Highly recommend 10 Bits Ranch to anyone looking for an unforgettable desert experience! Everything you need is there, but be sure to bring firewood as there are firepits but they do not supply the wood. It can be purchased in the town of Terlingua. read more

If I could I'd rate it at a zero 0 yes there are great reviews but they aren't current. The new owners lol SIS and COWBOY by the way he's no cowboy nor is he much of an owner. We had very lil water pressure in one of the new cabins that we had to shower at our neighbors cabin. We called and notified owner COWBOY he said it was just a filter and would change it. We told him we didn't wanna argue and he said that was a good thing because if we did he would throw everyone off his ranch. What a jerk. Anyway he change the filter and left. Still no pressure so off to the neighbors cabin to shower again. We sent him a message that it wasn't fixed and we got no response. We checked out and still haven't heard from anyone. Don't go unless you wanna be treated like trash. The have no customer service and like other reviews yes the floors were dirty and other guest complained that they had bugs in their cabin. Oh and by the way, several cabins lost power and had no AC but again no customer service. You get service when they want not at your convenience even though you are a paying customer. Never again will I stay at this wanna be ranch. There are several other ranches near by. Do some research and find another. Good luck to all. read more

Stayed February 2022 Pros - beautiful, large property close to Big Bend National Park - great value for size/quality of room and attractiveness of surrounding landscape - themed well (fun for pictures and imagination) - far from more crowded lodging areas (can't see anyone else's place) - dark at night (stargazing) - great customer service (thanks, Sis!) - lots of free supplies and good local information - rooms rustic on outside but fundamentally well made - (opinion) very comfortable bed Cons - non-potable tap water (made up for by ample supply of bottled and gallon size drinking water provided for free in room and common area) - not as close to Terlingua or Big Bend as other places - gas fireplace may be difficult for inexperienced users ****Property: - Our first view of the ranch was exciting. Approaching the property from the North, you crest a hill and are met with a great view of the chimney rocks and the little western themed "town" of XBR (Ten Bits Ranch). The drive itself is fun, and though unpaved, N County Road is in decent shape for anything with more ground clearance than a sports car. - The chimney rocks and other mountain features on the property are fantastic showcases of the area's beauty, and samplings of native desert plants are tastefully distributed around the town. - The town includes a "Cantina" common area, which is very well equipped: full kitchen with gas stove, 2 full size refrigerators, ample counter space for food prep, dining area with long table and smaller table, two mini-fridges with breakfast foods/drinks stocked, large collection of drinking water (bottles and gallon size), collection of snack bars, outdoor tables and chairs, plenty of trash cans, a clean common bathroom (so you or your kids don't have to walk back to your room). It's a great place to meet other guests and get to know them. - XBR has WiFi and Verizon coverage. Not the fastest network, but good for texts, calls, general web browsing, checking into flights - The property is 500 acres and extends far beyond the "town". Sis, my main contact for our stay described the ranch property to me this way: "Ten Bits Ranch is bordered by the red Chimney Rock formation on the East and up to Hen Egg Mountain on the West. The property is bounded on the North by the Apache Cave, directly across the road from the entrance of the Ranch. The southern boundary winds along North County Road, you will see white signs marking this. Folks are pretty friendly if you wander onto their land as long as you are respectful of the land." - Sis - Sis was incredibly helpful over the phone and via email. Even though the place is off-grid and has no staff permanently present, I expect she would have gotten us anything we needed if we asked. Before we even arrived, she sent me lots of information about the ranch and area. - If we had more time, we would have scheduled an entire day just to explore the property. ****Room: - We stayed in "The Schoolhouse", a single queen bed room. There are many other rooms with larger configurations. - The room was far more spacious than a typical hotel. We were able to setup our pack-and-play on either side of the bed with enough room to roll it around the whole thing with ease. - The bed was very comfortable (opinion). - A mini-fridge is included in the room, and we also used the full sized refrigerators (2) in the Cantina. - Bathroom was decently sized. - The shower is walk-in, so no tub for kids. This was ok for us with a 2 year old. - Non-potable drinking water was a bit of an inconvenience, but the room was stocked with plenty of bottled water, and the Cantina had entire cases of water bottles and gallon drinking water containers for us to use. - With the ranch being off-grid, there are reminders to conserve electricity, but hot water and room heat are gas powered, so don't worry about a cold shower or cold room. For A/C, there is a window unit, so I'm not sure how things are in the summer. Since you are likely to be away from the room during the day, I imagine even summer heat wouldn't be too much to air-condition as the desert cools down in the evenings. - Gas fireplace heated the room easily, and instructions (posted near fireplace) were clear and worked as described. The fireplace is un-vented, and a window must be cracked when operating the fireplace. Those who are unfamiliar with using gas appliances may find this inconvenient, but we found it nice to have gas heat on the cold nights. - There is a private porch with rocking chairs overlooking the western part of the property (including Hen Egg Mountain); this made a great place for watching the sunset. - The nights we stayed were very cold and windy, but inside the room was warm and free from drafts. Building seemed to be well built/insulated despite rustic appearance. Excellent and unique lodging for a better price than surrounding options. Pros vastly outweigh cons. Would stay here again. read more

Fantastic place to stay for trip to Big Bend, or just sit and watch sunrise. Stayed in Courthouse 8. 109 degrees but AC kept us very comfortable. For off grid, this place has all the comforts of home and more. Non potable water but plenty of bottled water supplied. We will come back. read more

We particularly like the small old western town layout of your ranch with unique "cabins" for the guests. The outdoor fire ring is a nice touch (and we beg it will be a popular hangout during cooler nights). The ranch location is perfect for visiting the Big Bend National Park and State Park. We like the spacious and fully equipped kitchen and its interior layout and décor. On our first morning we had an enjoyable breakfast at the high table/chairs at the kitchen front porch. There is plenty of space in the refrigerators to store our food. The supply of bottled water is a nice amenity given the hot/dry climate and the tap water is non-potable. Our cabin was very spacious (especially the bathroom) with an ample supply of towels for the duration of our stay. It was also very clean (no bugs except one spider hid behind the trim where the wall meets the ceiling but did not border us). Myself being an engineer and my son admired the solar power generation system and saw the large bank of batteries. The WIFI service was very reliable and the SAT TV was a nice touch (though we did not have time to watch much as we enjoyed the nightly outdoor). We have some suggestions for the owner to consider: 1. Upsize the window A/C unit as the room dropped to comfortable temperature only at 3 a.m. 2. Provide cross ventilation in the common kitchen so that it is not too hot to have dinner in there. 3. Provide a firmer bed. 4. Provide one more luggage rack or small table in the room. read more

This is an absolutely fantastic piece of property in an excellent and convenient location to Big Bend National Park. My son and I came here in February of 2015 and arrived late in the evening. The location is remote and we closely followed the directions provided by the owner - don't bother with GPS here. We made it through the darkness and arrived upon the ranch with a bonfire underway on the property too tired to be social we retired for the night. UPON WAKING WE WERE OVERCOME BY THE BEAUTY OF THE PROPERTY. Sorry to shout but no picture you will find online will do the property justice. The owners are fantastic, honest, friendly, and helpful people. The accommodations are extremely clean and would easily match many higher end hotels in a city setting. While I'm not a big one for decor, it's quite simply impossible to ignore the attention to detail in the decor of the room and of the entire property. You truly can imagine yourself in a simpler (albeit harder work) time. I stayed the "Bank" cabin which had a great view of the canyon and Chihuahua desert. Had I any real concept of the beauty of the ranch prior to my visit I would have added a few more days to remain on property. For those using this as a base for exploring BBNP it works wonderfully. I had initially identified Chisos Mountain Lodge as my primary place of rest and was disappointed it was not available. I began a search for other accommodations and discovered Ten Bits Ranch via Google. I cannot be thankful enough that Chisos was not available. Chisos cannot hold a candle to this property. I traveled from Florida to Dallas, rented a car a drove to Terlingua. It was a long journey but Big Bend and Ten Bits Ranch was worth every moment in travel. I can't say when I might be able to return, but this property will absolutely be my choice for any travel in Big Bend. You will not regret a decision to stay at Ten Bits Ranch. read more

Ten Bits Ranch is a 2.3 miles down a gravel road. No tv or cell but if your destination is Big Bend National Park, Study Butte and/or Terlinqua why bother. Jennifer and Steve Wick build this solar powered group of western style cabins overlooked by canyon walls that open to a sixty or eighty mile view of the Chihuahuan desert. Steve has a 1/2 day tour up and down the surrounding the cliffs and ravens to see dinousar bones and ancient native American sites right under your nose. The accommodations are clean and well maintained. Breakfast is a simple layout of juices, cereals, muffins, coffee. It's a 20+ minute drive into Study Butte for a hot breakfast. At night there's a fire pit in the middle of the compound and guest gather for cocktails at sunset. I brought a small telescope that gave the group a little star gazing diversion from chatting by the fire. I took the Amtrak, Sunset Limited from New Orleans to Alpine, rented a car and drove 85 miles south to get to Ten Bits. Their web site gives several alternatives which are all long drives and quite scenic. Big Bend National Park was my primary destination. After a day in the park stop into Terlinqua or Study Butte for a margarita before heading to Ten Bits to clean up. After sunset there was always a group of guests headed back to town for dinner and country music. There aren't many places to stay in the area and few are as off the beaten path as Ten Bits. It was a wonderful part of my whole Big Bend experience. I'll be back. read more

Loved this place! If you want to get away from it all, this is it. Miles away from anything including the nearest highway. Very nicely designed cabins with comfortable beds. Everything is new. Nice community building for meals with a kitchen, stove, refrigerators, fireplace and a large table. Never saw any staff but didn't need to because everything worked so well. Went for a beautiful hike/climb in the morning in the hills and rock formations nearby. Would stay here again in a minute. read more

We first stayed at Ten Bits ranch in the spring of 2015. We had a great experience with a clean comfortable room, relaxing porch furniture, a hot breakfast and friendly hosts. Upon rebooking in 2018 we found the ranch had sold and was managed remotely. This gave us pause but we did book a three day stay. What a change. Our room was not clean. Floors had not been cleaned in ages, dust was thick on lamps, bed and decorations, bedding was in very poor condition, porch furniture was so weathered you got slivers when using it. Big Bend is a beautiful place to visit but unpleasant lodging greatly dampered our enjoyment. read more

Awesome! All I can say is awesome! Ten bits was a much needed vacation for my husband and I. There was so much to do! The owners were very helpful in suggesting places to go and thing so to do. One day we went horseback riding in a mountain! It was amazing! The next day we had dinner under the stars! It was a once in a lifetime experience! We will definitely be visiting again very soon! read more

Meet the Business Owner: Cowboy J.
Ten Bits Ranch was opened in 2004 by on one of the most beautiful property locations in the Big Bend region. The Ranch was built to look like the old west town of Chimney Rock. All rooms are themed like an old town. One room is named "The Gunsmith Shop", another "The School House", "The Bank" and "The General Store". On a Big Bend vacation, I stumbled across the Ten Bits Ranch. The beauty of the mountains, desert and dark sky location struck me like no other place my travels had taken me. I contacted the Wick family and was lucky enough to purchase this ranch in early 2017. I like to ride horses, motorcycles/ATVs, shoot guns and enjoy the freedom of the ranch. I love the independence, beauty and fresh mountain air of West Texas. Ten Bits has it all in one unique place. When I have to leave the ranch, I think about it every day until I get back. I hope you get a chance to see West Texas, Big Bend Parks and enjoy the Ten Bits Ranch. - Cowboy
