This is such an amazing place, I highly recommend it to anyone!!! This place has everything you need from showers to ice and firewood. It's very quiet, has great views and amazing stargazing!! The family that runs the campground is very nice and extremely helpful! I was in a bit of a situation with my vehicle while I was there. I didn't realize my car was low on oil, I started panicking and didn't know where I could get some or if my car could make it to town. Guy (the owner) kindly helped me out of this situation! We found Rancho Topanga just googling tent campsites and are so happy we did. The property has gorgeous views, lots of cacti (my favorite). All the sites had a picnic table, a faucet with running water, dumpsters and some had a canopy so bring your own if you're unsure if yours does. Also a ring for fire pit is included but bring your own firewood! Best of all their showers have hot water, we were here in January so it got chilly at sundown. Toilets have a heater inside and the sink to wash dishes or your hands also has hot water. Affordable and very quick drive to Big Bend! read more

Great place, good people who work hard at this. The reason we chose it in the first place is no generators are allowed, so it's nice and quiet with great dark skies. Highlights that were a super pleasant surprise: very clean bathrooms (w/ electric lights!); common dish sink/counter with electric light and hot water!; clean shower with hot water and electric light; water spigots near the camp areas (which are nicely spread out); and you can buy bags of ice for a decent price. And even do laundry (we didn't try that). Also trash/recycling barrels at each site. I'd suggest they add something more distinctive as a marker out at the road -- it's easy to miss, and I wouldn't try to arrive the first time after dark. We used it as a base to get into Big Bend Nat'l Park, and that worked well. read more

Showed up in the very off season without a reservation and was addressed lot I had three heads, I with I would've made reservations just so they could tell me that they only take cash, after driving back to Terlingua to get cash we got setup for a few days. Only seen 3 campers and they all were in a little valley and you could tell they were not together as I was there two days and walked around to check everything out. Our campsite was the furthest away from everybody on top of the hill but we were close to the bathrooms, it was alright but the fun thing about camping is meeting people and talking, but it was fine because we did ask to be close to the bathroom, latter that night we regretted it because the weather changes very fast and well we had to leave the collapsed tent due to extreme wind and sleep in the truck. The next day was a bit cooler but not bad for being January, but we were ready the next night, the man that runs the place later told me that tent like mine don't do very good out here because the weather changes so quick, The next night we slept like baby's in out tent, we tied it down with an extra 6 ropes and wedged my truck in front of it. It was 20 degrees and rainy, great sleeping weather The Bathroom facility worked great till the last day, I went in to take my first shower of the trip and no power, so the pumps weren't working so no water in the shower or toilets. They did tell us that the were Solar powered but figured they had batteries to store the energy they are drawling. Bottom line. It is what it is. Make reservations, take cash, take showers when the sun is out, tie your tent down, bring a lot of beer because beer make everything better. Probably a four star review but I had to take another off because, no shower, no toilet on the last day, no answer on the phone when I tried to call to let them know, cash only read more

Stayed just before Thanksgiving 2017 for 5 days. Our tent: Backpacking tent for 2 people. (There were tents of ALL sizes around, any bigger than a 4-5 person can be put on the ground and not on the tent pad.) Looked for a simple tent campground to spend several days in Big Bend territory and got way more than expected! The sites were well maintained, each with their own tent pad and picnic table. There was also a water spigot and trash and recycle bins close to each site. The biggest surprise was the bath house! Definitely did not expect there to be HOT WATER showers, electricity, sinks, and private toilets! Really appreciated the cleanliness and organization. Yeah, the owner is a bit behind the times (had to mail a check ahead of time) technologically, and he can be a bit brash, but I'm super glad he decided to open up his land for some affordable car-camping! Bath Houses are just a bonus! Will definitely stay at Rancho Topanga again next time I'm headed to Big Bend National Park. read more

After nights at broke down Alpine hotel with no hot water and a dumpy Marfa RV park next to the owner hammering on a deck for his Airstream, this is the place worth the 500 mile drive. Gorgeous, well groomed, and nicely spaced, this is what a private campground should be. Don't let those snowflake reviews about Guy being grumpy dissuade you. He has a lovely wife (see her pictures in the office) and an affinity for Jaguars (I saw two and a large garage). NOT a hillbilly asshole but a proud owner. Coming back. Oh, and staying in the national park is difficult and crowded. Stay here. read more

The campground and facilities were nice. Unfortunately there were a few downsides. The man who owned the camp was not very friendly as he clarified directions for me on the phone. We also paid $10 for firewood and he brought us a bunch of his scrap boards that had nails in it. We were not impressed to say the least. Overall the location is nice but better service would have been appreciated. read more

Came to Topanga for one night before we were able to get a camping spot in Big Bend National Park. The owners are extremely gracious and were able to fit us in last-minute. It's a short 10 minute drive from downtown Terlingua, where you can access the few restaurants of the town and famous Starlight Theater for dinner or drinks. The showers are EXTREMELY nice and well-maintained. We wanted to come back every night for a shower after hiking all day. Definitely recommend staying here if you're ever stopping through Terlingua! read more

This is my fiances' and my favorite spot to camp when we come visit Big Bend area once a year. The owners are an older couple that live on the property and take really good care of it. I guess I'll just list all the reasons I like this place, cause there are quite a few haha. -I love that the bathrooms are well maintained and really nice for being camping bathrooms, not your typical porta potties you would normally get. -the owner offers firewood for sale so you don't have to drive across town if you run out. Also they sell fresh eggs from their chickens. -It is usually not very crowded and the sites are spaced out enough that you aren't super close to your neighbors. -there is a nice trail on the property, it's not very long but nice for a short morning hike with Indian drawings along it..i don't know if they are real or not but they look pretty cool. -We always try to get the camping spot up on the ridge because it has the best views, the sunrise and sunset are phenomenal from there. It also has the nicest bathroom, only shared between 3 camping spots atop the ridge. Also check out the owners shop, he makes leather goods and is quite talented. I bought a belt last time we went and the way it's holding up, my grandkids will probably inherit it. Seriously some quality stuff and his prices really reasonable . read more

I have camped several times now at Rancho Topango and I have to say that it is one of the better options around the area for convenient tent camping. Although it is just off Highway 170, there is very little traffic out there and it still feels very secluded. As a previous reviewer noted, the best camping is in the valley due to the risk of winds on the ridge. I have camped at both and was lucky the time I camped on the ridge as we had no wind that night. Still, if you camp in the valley it is very very short hike to the top of one of the many ridges around if you want to take in the surroundings. Take a couple of chairs up there and just relax. The restroom facilities aren't fancy but they are well maintained and clean with hot water. They also offer a dish washing sink to wash your camping dishes after supper. The fire rings are well kept by the owners and they also sell firewood if you are in need. The convenience to Terlinqua, the state park, the national park, and Lajitas makes this place a really nice option to consider if you are visiting in the area. read more

We were excited about our camping spot overlooking the valley, but when night came the wind made sleep absolutely impossible. STAY IN THE VALLEY if there is any wind in the forecast! Oh, and camping for two people in the valley is cheaper than on the ridge ($20 vs $25). Bring firewood; The owner will sell you a tiny pile of discarded 2x4s (enough to burn for a couple of hours, tops). The best thing about it was the shower/bathroom. Clean, private, with hot water. Our dogs had a great time, but man... With that wind, we didn't sleep a wink. read more

This place would have been a great site if the owner had kept his dogs away from harassing us. His dogs came to our site numerous times. We also paid $10 for scraps of wood to burn. If you go and they ask if you want wood tell them it is to eat with so you get decent wood not trash. He was also rude on the phone when I called to make the reservation. Nice little spot. Camp sites are more spread out from the ones we saw in the national park and the bathrooms and showers were very clean. There are potable water faucets, picnic tables and fire pits at every camp site, and pretty views of the surrounding area. Took about an hour to drive in to the Chisos Basin, not a bad drive given the beautiful scenery on the way. We did experience some wind but we secured our tent with some rocks and it was ok. After putting in ear plugs to drown the noise from the wind we slept just fine. The owner of the camp site was making rounds during the windy days, and helped secure our neighbor's tent while they were out for the day so it didn't blow away. The owner said he will be adding another bath house (our site was a 5 minute walk from the bathrooms, so not bad at all as-is) and shelters at each site to provide some shade, which the group site already has. read more

Wifi, well maintained, and easy access. There are several campsites with more than enough space, it's cost friendly, and there are clean bathrooms and showers available. And it's only 10-15 minutes from the Big Bend park entrance. I definitely recommend this campground if you can't or don't want to stay in Big Bend itself. read more

My friend and I had never camped on our own and hadn't planned on camping so far out of the National Park, but this was the best experience I've had in my life. The owners were very nice, helped us even though we didn't have a reservation, and didn't hesitate to let us know they were there to help in any way they can. The bath house was extremely clean, the campsites were decently spaced, and plenty of real estate for setting up 2 or 3 tents if needed. I recommend this place whole-heartedly. Make reservations so you for sure get a good space since there are only 16 or so spots. read more

The actual campground itself is satisfactory. The owner, however, needs a few years training in customer service. I won't bother the readers with the gory details. Let it suffice that as many other reviewer have experienced, the owner was consistently discourteous and often down right mean. Fine tent camping, no RVs as far as the eye can see. Clean well kept bath house with hot water. Friendly brown dog they inform you about. Fires are permitted and you can purchase firewood at the store in Terlingua. Stars and view of the mountains and canyon are phenomenal. Highly recommend read more
