Old coffee maker; must be from the 70's

Role back to 1974? Bare necessities: bed, shower, sink, and coffee maker. Bed was soft. The little fridge and table are a luxury. Our room seemed well maintained and clean. No breakfast and check-out, earlier than most: 10 AM.

    Pet friendly. Only $10 extra.

We were already having a challenging day. I booked the Paintbrush Motel because their info said "Pet Friendly ". When we arrived Micky assisted us in checking in. When I advised we had our dog, after checking, he said they had one pet friendly room left. Micky was very personable and it wasn't his fault...but I hope they consider advising some of their booking sites that just because they are pet friendly, a room isn't guaranteed. There is a $10 charge per night which is reasonable based on our recent experiences. They have a small lawn in fron of the property and encourage pets use it. They keep a bucket and poop scoop available there for proper disposal. This motel is an older property and at first glance you might not consider stopping but a closer look will reveal some recent paint and some nice touches like a bench seat outside nearly every door. It's all non -smoking and there is no smell of a room smoked in previously. They have room air conditioners and I was so thankful our room (#39) had it mounted in the back of the room instead of right in front of the bed(s). The room was spotless, sink and vanity in an area before the bathroom. Toilet, shower and tub separate. Complimentary shampoo, lotion and bar soap along with a Make-Up Wipe. Our room had one queen bed and was large and well laid out. Micro & refrigerator-alarm clock, flat screen TV. Small round table and 2 chairs also-a nice touch. Coffee, coffee pot and real coffee mugs provided. There is a restaurant/bar across the parking lot making it wuite convenient. Also multiple fast food within walking distance. Riverton is a small town but there is a WalMart here. So why not 5 stars? Well I would rate the Paintbrush 4.5, so close to perfect. The one and only issue was some scattered trash in the parking area....which could have been recent. ( Humans can be so disrespectful! ), but the main offenders were a couple of garbage cans that were placed to be convenient for travelers, (which is very thoughtful!) in the corners of the walkway in front of this U-shaped one story property . They were filthy and really stood out since the rest of the place is so well cared for. Last but not least, The Paintbrush Motel has been family owned and operated for years. In our travels we enjoy using local proprietors vs. big box. In this time of Covid it's especially important to help support local businesses! If you're ever here in Riverton we recommend you try a stay. You get a Big Bang for you buck.

I don't normally do selfies with motel owners, but I was a happy customer in getting my camera charger and battery returned so quickly.

What a wonderful place to stay and the price VERY reasonable. The beds were firm but not hard and the pillows comfortable. One of the best nights sleep in a long time. Plenty of hot water that did NOT take forever to reach the room. Nothing fancy but oh so clean and comfortable. A small family owned business, along with the favorable Yelp reviews is why I tried the place out. I wanted to support local business other than motel chains. The two brothers were extremely hospitable and helpful in directing me in activities that I wanted to do in the area. I left my camera charger and battery in the room on checkout. The brothers called me right away, unlike other motels that wait for you to contact them. I was about 20 minutes out of town. It was worth it to me to turn around and get it as I was traveling for several weeks. I have been associated with the tourism business for decades. These two brothers are the real deal in customer service.

cute retro sign (the rooms are modern however)

We chose the Paintbrush, spoke on the phone several times, and after taking to Gini several times on the phone I knew we had made a good choice.

The pro: 1. $60 a night was the cheapest in town. 2. Shower kinda worked and AC was cool enough, more on that The cons: 1. High crime area: A vehicle was broken into overnight during my stay. 2. Weekly rates. 3. Owner did not answer me when I asked if they offer a AAA discount, maybe because his kids were yelling about and making a small ruckus? 4. Checking out, same thing. Rang the bell, kid comes out to greet me. I think they need to make her a nametag and give her a W2 at this point... 5. The room: DIRTY. Soap scum on the soap...bag, bottle, blister pack, whachamacallit? See pics 5a. Mirrors streaked and dirty 5b. Hair on my bed. Yuck. Whatever, I was too tired to care. 5c. Table and windowsill had marks from old food, condensation off water glasses, etc 5d. Speaking of which, a little glass cleaner and a microfibre towel would work wonders on the windows 5e. Still has a room key, not a card. Wow, haven't seen that since...maybe 2002ish, Curry Village, Yosemite? 6. Room was 90 plus degrees upon initial entry. AC Set to 61, took hours to cool down. 7. Kind of tight parking lot, use the outer lot Perhaps, this would be a 5 star review absent the rooms filth and the lack of professionalism from the owner. Seriously, I've worked retail, restaurant, auto shops, janitorial, construction, and motel roomskeeping my whole life: A little bit of good smelling disinfectant, Windex, Kaboom and a carpet shampooer would go a lllooonnngggg way here. Until then, skip.

But when we got to the motel he tried telling me I only reserved a one bed room (I didn't, I reserved a two bed room because as much as I love my dad, I would rather not share a bed with him and my spouse). I showed him my printed reservation, and he told me he changed the room because he assumed we would only need one bed. He then told me I could have one bed or go to another motel. What a wonderful experience...... Save yourself and get another room. Others in town would be a few dollars more, but worth it.

He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead, a snuffed-out candle..." It was the evening of the 2017 total solar eclipse. I was in the middle of an epic motorcycle trip and I had just witnessed the most spectacular celestial event I have ever seen. It was fantastic and I was still riding this high when I pulled into Riverton. The eclipse brought in quite a few "outsiders" to the town and most hotels were booked and a traffic delay had caused me to change my camping plans. I rode through town and found two somewhat worn-out looking motels still advertising vacancy. I got to the edge of town, turned around, and pulled into the first one I came across. The Ol' Wyoming. It was there I met the snuffed out candle. It was only about 9:00 p.m. but the town seemed to tuck-in early. I rang the bell for the Ol' Wyoming and a large, tough looking guy answered the door and made it apparent that I was a disruption. He scowled, then barked that he had a room and told me to come in. He was checking something on his computer and I was still so excited about what I had seen that day so I asked him if they had good weather for the eclipse. Smoldering Candle: "I wouldn't know. I never saw it. I dont care about nature and crap like that! Cant you see all the idiots in town! I was working all day and I just want to go to bed". Now friends, this may not be exactly what was said but it is the jest of the conversation to the best of my recollection.. As I recall the exchange was a bit more vulgar and perhaps a little mockingly he gave me the stink-eye. He then quoted me a price for the room. It was going to be 3X the going rate traveler, we take cash or credit cards. My first thought was "what? he was here and did not even step outside to see it?". My next thought was "So much for the advertised low rates". No wonder there was a room left. Some desperate sod will roll into town around midnight and that will be his only option. Probably doubled in price again by that time. Ugh. I said thanks and went to the next dump that still had rooms available. A sweet old lady gave me that room for $50. That was a stretch for that room too but hell if I was going to give my cash to the snuffed out candle. Maybe the Ol' Wyoming only had one room left and he was trying to maximize his profits. I dont know. Perchance it was the nicest room left in Riverton. I seriously doubt it but I'll never know becasue I'll never go back to the Ol' Wyoming. The place has no heart.
