Very clean and well kept. The girl there helped me greatly, gave me advice and helped me so much with my new pet. I will be returning.

Gem Birds

Gem Birds has been around for many years, but has only recently relocated to Paddy's Market. I…read moredon't recall much about the previous location (which was a little further down Main North Road), but I thought I'd check out the new store. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the fact that he front of the store seems very cramped with cages on either side of you. It's quite claustrophobic, but when you walk to the back it's a little more open with larger cages and consequently larger birds. The problem with the cramped front end of the store is that the cages tend to smell. I understand this is normal when selling animals so I'd hardly call it a criticism. The staff really know their stuff when it comes to birds. They are happy to discuss your situation and which bird would suit you, as well as options for raising and possibly training your new feathered friend. To assist with the training they offer a wing clipping service so your bird will stay grounded while you teach some tricks to impress your friends. Cages are available out the front of the store for all sizes of bird, as are toys to keep your little friend entertained while you're not around. Once again, staff can advise you of appropriate cage sizes and toys. Don't let the initial smell put you off. If you want a bird or advice on how to raise or train a bird, this is the place to go.

Went here early in the morning and the place is so disgusting. The smell I understand. The floor was thick (and when I say thick, mean thick!) with bird seeds, enough for someone to slide then slip. I know birds do throw birds seeds/empty seed shells about but come on, this is an hour after opening do they not sweep or vacuum the day before or at all? There are empty cabinet cages thick with dust and cobwebs. There's layers of dust on their products, which puts me off purchasing. The only good thing about them is their customer service, the guy there was very helpful. Never going back in there again.

They have exotic pets like snakes, lizards and other reptiles and also spiders - eek! I will not be anywhere near those things and it's a good thing they dont' sell Mortein as I'd be armed and dangerous with a can. It's a big shops and there's alot of pet stock under the roof with equipment, food, supplies and all sorts of weird pets and the norm and nfortunately they do sell kittens. But there are other furry creatures like rabbits and guinea pigs and if you don't want to get that close there's always fish.
This pet shop keeps birds in a way that isn't good for their health and welfare…read more I visited this shop about 3 weeks ago and there is a room where they keep the birds for sale. The room's cold, has a concrete floor and no natural light. Birds need natural full spectrum light in order for their bodies to make vitamin D and enable them to have the correct sleeping patterns. They should at least have full spectrum light bulbs. The room has parrots in triple-decker cages. The birds in the top and middle cages get artificial light, but the parrots in the lowest cages are living in deep shadow and it's distressing to see how these birds cope with this. The one sole occupant in the lowest cage has no tail feathers left and is continually climbing to reach the upper corners of its cage to try to access some of the light - anyone can see this is an anxious and unhappy bird. The room also contains box cages full of about 30 - 40 finches. The owners have only been bothered putting up the one perch for this many finches in a single cage. Every centimetre of this perch is used by the finches; when one bird moves they're all forced to move. The rest of the birds have to sit on the ground and would also have to roost on the ground at night. This is bad for their feet - birds need to be able to perch, especially at night when they roost. They're also forced to spend extended periods of time overnight on a floor full of bird droppings, obviously not good for their health. On a closer look at the cage there is a bracket to support a second perch. These people have clearly just been too lazy to bother putting in a second perch for such a high number of these birds. A friend told me he'd gone in there once and saw a pair of very young budgie chicks just sitting in the corner on the floor. They were clearly too young to have been taken from the nest but here were these people putting them into this cage without even adequate perching and trying to sell them before they were properly ready to leave the nest. The way the owners keep these birds shows no regard for their welfare and these people are denying these birds' the opportunity to engage in essential natural behaviors like accessing enough light, the ability to perch and the ability to avoid having to sit in bird droppings. Not good at all.

Pet stores are supposed to be warm and welcoming places. I say, let's give it a chance first. Right at the back of the store are the animals for sale. There are puppies available in glass enclosures at the back wall. They're not cramped quarters, but they're not too roomy either. I guess you have to compromise when it comes to space. Still, they do have a lot of it. Staff politely greet you upon entry and say goodbye as you leave. They also like to ask if you found what you were looking for as you approach the counter. The place is rarely busy so I guess they need to kill the time somehow. I do find the "over the top customer service" thing annoying, but as far as I'm concerned they haven't overstepped the boundaries yet. They have a good selection of store, though the prices are a little heftier than some other places. There is a good selection of food as well, and if you're struggling to find the only food your picky dog will touch then you may find it here.

The store is huge with a concrete floor that seems to be very common with large pet stores. If you do decide to bring your best friend in with you, you can give him/her a bath at the back of the store. This is quite commonly used and it's quite cute seeing dogs enjoying their baths. They really do have a large range of stock here, hence the name I suppose. Dog treats can be found at the front of the store, with housing options for dogs, fish, birds etc scattered throughout. You don't have to bring your dog though. I've seen people walk into the store with parrots on their shoulders. I assume these birds have their wings clipped, but the staff are always ready to help with your pet and like to make a fuss of them. It's one of the friendliest pet stores I've ever been to.

They have marine's as well as tropicals and coldwater fish. The livestock is always in such good condition - Aggie's acclimatise incoming stock rather than putting it straight out in the tanks, which helps ensure everyone gets healthy fish. There is just about every kind of accessory you can think of here, all kinds of tanks, filters, cabinets, heaters, lights, plants, food, medicine. They also have some lizards and frogs, but seriously, this is a fish destination plus. There's plenty of parking right outside the shop - halfway down the end of a strip of industrial buildings, with a plentiful amount of spaces.
