James Joyce boasts having the "best" burger in town (it's not) and our local friend recommended the place more for drinks, but we chose this anyway since its within walking distance from Widder bar where we came from. The menu reads like a dependable Irish pub fare, but with Zurich prices. GAH! I feel destitute in Zurich. Prices of 25CHF and up for an entree is typical. Fish n chips were deliciously crispy; while the burger has decent moist MMMeat. Alas, the cheese was dried out and burnt on the edges. (I mean, how does one manage to burn cheese?!) Sit outside if the weather permits, because the setting is really inviting with tea light candles and fresh flowers on the table. A glass of Lillet Blanc and a Guiness on tap are excellent end of the night drinks. The friendly service warrants the 4th star, but you should go somewhere else for the best burger in town.

The hotel had been slated for demolition and the bank that was building a place to entertain its out of town clients bought the wood paneling and decorations and shipped it all over to Zurich--crazy! I read about this place in my guide book and it was also recommended by my Zurich resident friend so I had to check it out. From the outside you'd never be able to tell what the interior holds; it has a quite a modern-looking patio and is on a well-heeled side street off the main shipping drag, Bonhofstrasse. It looks like it could be any other upscale bar until you walk inside: lots of dark gleaming yet well-worn wood, intricate tile work, and period paintings. You can take it all in as you sip the beverage of your choice. We weren't hungry enough to sample their food, but from what I could see on the other tables it looked pretty damn good. The bartender was very nice and friendly and the whole place just felt very comfortable. Well worth a visit.

What a bummer. I was severely disappointed on my most recent visit…read more It was fairly busy upstairs, but downstairs was dead. Despite having having 3 bartenders behind the bar, they couldn't handle our drink orders. It was a zoo! It took forever to get a drink because they are sooooo slow. Some might argue that a good drink takes time, but do you really have to stir the damn ice cubes 640 times to properly incorporate two ingredients? By the time, the bartender was finally done with our unprecedented bulk order of 3 drinks, we asked to pay with a credit card. He asked if it was all together. We said it was two cards. He shook his head in disapproval and rudely said he couldn't deal with it now - he has other drinks to make. So we walked away! He's lucky we came back to order more of the world's slowest and rudest drinks, or we may have just forgotten to pay our tab. I mean, businesses do need money to thrive, don't they? His attitude the whole night was: too cool for school. Bottom line is: their specialty is gin (I prefer, whiskey, tequila and rum to gin anyway) and they make a good cocktail, albeit pricey (15-24 CHF), but there are plenty of other magnificent cocktail bars in Zürich that make incredibly delicious drinks and manage to treat their customers like customers! Think Barfly'z, Hotel Rivington & Sons, Kronenhalle Bar, Tina Bar... and the list goes on... I'm striking Dante from my list.

Needless to stay my $32 at Simplon did nothing...not a thing...in the realm of winding down. The only reaction I had was feeling poor (in the best of company and surroundings). On the upside, this is a beautiful bar. Wisely selected by my Zurich Yelp counterpart, Simon, who joined me and some Swiss Yelpers for a few cocktails on the outside benches. The waitstaff was extremely friendly and hospitable. Promptly greeted with an addictive popcorn whose flavors I couldn't seem to pinpoint (savory, heavy on the butter) - my hand kept going back for more - and more. Our table had a variety of delicious drinks including a thick and refreshing Pina Colada and Basil Smash. Despite its very lavish design and decor, Simplon Bar achieves an inviting and casual ambiance that would easily make me a regular.
