Sunday was my second time at this Fieldwork location. It's the closer one to me, but not as nice as…read morethe San Leandro one, in my opinion. My partner and I wanted to check out the non-alc beers, which they have a nice selection of. We snagged a spot at one of the metal picnic tables and ordered by QR code. We both got the Day Money, which I absolutely love. I'm normally not a big fan of grapefruit, but it just works so well in this blonde. My partner also tried the Light NA American Pilsner, which he liked even more. My main issue with this location is that the seating is just so uncomfortable, it's hard to want to stay a while. I'm always in pain after sitting at the metal picnic tables and the look of the place is just a bit sterile. Service is friendly and quick though!

We ordered the vegetable spatzle ($24) which tasted like cheesy vegetable egg noodles. It was good with hot sauce, otherwise a little too bland for me. The trout ($28) was cooked well and they deboned it, which was a nice touch. We also got the bratwurst plate ($23) which came with sauerkraut, cabbage, and mashed potatoes. Service was okay, although slow and less attentive than one would expect for a nearly empty restaurant. Maybe because we were seated outdoors? Our water glasses remained unfilled once they were empty.

Mortar & Pestle is such a hidden gem in downtown San Mateo, tucked behind Curry Up Now (go through…read morethe alley, it's worth finding). The Indian-inspired cocktails are always a hit, but this last visit was next level thanks to our bartender, Lee. We stopped in just to catch a vibe and ended up staying way longer than planned because every drink he made was better than the last. He really worked his magic behind the bar. I've been here quite a few times, and while the service hasn't always stood out, Lee completely changed that. He was welcoming, personable, and made the entire experience memorable. We came too late for the kitchen this time, but the food has always been great on past visits. Lee is the reason I finally felt compelled to leave a 5-star review. We'll definitely be back!

"Yes, I know " At 8:52 at cash register... You should come earlier in the day . You should come back tomorrow . You should come back another day etc.." Btw, I was helping her organize my purchases on the counter to get rung up, bagging my stuff etc.. With all that talking from her, I still got out at 9:02. Some other customers behind me also needed to be rung up. Not happy. I never had such bad customer service. Upper management should take a close look at their staff. If there are people in the store shopping before 9 pm closing hours, they should be able to finish their purchase and not be harassed when they are trying to pay. They should not be told to "come back tomorrow " etc... Wow...
