    Nice picture... nice waiting area!
    Lily A.

Pacific Retina Care is located in the Waikele Shopping Center. There is ample parking in front of the establishment. There is a large reception area and several chairs to sit down on. There's a nice picture in the waiting room (he has several from this photographer... and they are pricey!) and the facility is very clean and well kept. http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=KrpELE9NbD4QHN-dwYfokA&userid=IXdmrbRu0veA-OuaP0URwQ I was referred here after going to my yearly eye exam. I have to wear glasses or contacts... or else I can't see! And I haven't sucked it up and gotten Lasik... yet. Anyway, my eye doc noticed some "white" areas upon examination of my eyes after being dilated. She was a bit concerned so I was referred here as this doc is the best of the best. It was a long process, but hey, you only have one set of eyes! I checked in and answered some questions, and then began a series of eye tests (close one eye and see this, blink when you see this, etc etc)... finally after an hour and a half I got to see the doc. He was professional, patient, and quite friendly. I liked that he explained each picture of my eye that he showed me and asked if I had any questions throughout the conversation. Great bedside manner! In the end, the "white" areas my first eye doc saw were perfectly normal as I'm nearsighted, and I guess when you're nearsighted your eyes 'stretch' more creating more "white". Sigh of relief... all is well. If you need an eye specialist, I highly recommend Pacific Retina Care.

Dr. Mark Tafoya is an excellent MD. The problem is the staff. Unprofessional they way they treat and talk to patients.

Because we live in town, my husband usually has appointments with Dr. Lai at the Honolulu office in the Hale Pawa'a Building. Still, this post-surgery follow-up appointment was scheduled at this Aiea medical center. But even though we had to travel 9 miles to Aiea, we didn't mind the drive because my husband was scheduled for the clinic's first appointment at 8:00 AM, and we would be traveling counterflow during peak weekday traffic hours. When we arrived at Pali Momi's Medical Office Building, we checked the Hospital Directory to confirm Dr. Lai's office number as suite 470 since several other ophthalmologists work for the Retina Consultants of Hawai'i. We arrived by 7:45 A.M. and found at least five other patients we recognized sitting in the surgery center's lobby, waiting outside the office door. We asked if anyone had tried opening the office door after asking if anyone else had the first appointment with Dr. Lai. Apparently, everyone else's appointment was after my husband's and the door was unlocked. Within five minutes of checking in with the receptionist, one of the nurses escorted my husband to an examination room, removed his bandages, assessed his vision, inquired if he was experiencing pain or complications overnight, and then my husband returned out to the lobby for a few minutes before being seen by Dr. Lai. We were delighted with Dr. Lai and his office staff's professionalism, efficiency, and friendliness. Also, my husband's recovery has been going well, with improved vision, and he has not experienced any pain.

I've had an ongoing eye issue for 7 years, I've seen 5 separate doctors over this time, most of which have been good, but Dr James Lai stands out amongst all of them. He is caring, detailed, and skillful. I recently had surgery and 2 days later my vision is to a place I actually had given up hope I would ever achieve again. It brought me to tears, and I can say, without hesitation, that this would not have been possible without Dr Lai and his amazing support team at Retina Consultants. Not just for the surgery itself, but for the consistency and high level of care they have provided me over the last 5 years. Good things are always worth the wait. Huge thank you to Retina Consultants and Dr Lai.

My second eye doctor referred me to Dr. Sarah Read at Retina Institute of Hawaii. I contacted them and was able to get an appointment within 2 weeks which seems to be the norm for health care providers post CoVID. I showed up for my appointment to a busy waiting room of other patients. What I found out is that they have 5 doctors but only one of them are at either of the 5 locations at one time. I waited for about 45 minutes then was called to do the preliminary eye checks with the med assistants. I was then asked to wait in a secondary waiting area which I sat for about 2 hours. I kept seeing other patients who came in after me go forward and leave. There is actually a sign posted in the waiting area which states that the long wait times is their average due to the type of medical cases. Once I saw Dr. Read, she made me feel at ease. She is a cheerful, confident and a well respected specialist. She performed the recommended surgery on my eye and I am very happy with the results. Thank you Dr. Read!

At first it felt like I was seeing the world through plastic wrap smeared with bacon grease; over time it worsened into what seemed like wrinkled paper. I was scared I might lose sight in that eye. I had to depend solely on my left eye and felt unsafe driving at night because headlights became blinding spotlights. At Jenkins Eye Clinic I learned I had cataracts in both eyes. The staff were pleasant, knowledgeable, accommodating, and compassionate. I was a little devastated at first -- I thought I was too young -- but Dr. Nikpoor put me at ease. She explained what to expect before and after the procedure, answered all my questions about vision outcomes, pain, downtime, and cost, and helped me schedule bilateral cataract surgery for early April. My procedure was scheduled for 8:00 a.m., and I was out by 9:30 a.m. Tears of joy escaped my eyes when I realized I could see through my right eye again. The vision felt different -- somehow better. Colors, especially blue, are deeper and more vivid; whites are more brilliant. I can now safely drive at night without fear. I am grateful to Dr. Nikpoor, the staff at Jenkins Eye Clinic, and the team at The Surgical Suites.

We learn, play sports, watch movies, read, enjoy sunsets and fireworks, etc. through our eyes. What would we do without them? I first visited Jenkins Eye Care in 2000 and had LASIK surgery. The best result was getting rid of contact lenses! That one inconvenience was gone from my daily routine! What a relief! Recently, my optometrist noticed that I had the beginnings of cataracts. So many people advised me to get the surgery as soon as possible, so... Okay... I went for the exam/consultation and now am waiting to schedule the surgery. It's such a popular procedure that the office is backed up for months! I'm looking forward to interacting with the professional, patient, and pleasant staff again! I think I met six different people who helped me navigate the system! They were all kind and thorough! I highly recommend Jenkins Eye Care. They're very experienced and have an excellent reputation!

The first time was a good experience we covered all concerns. Maybe because there was an intern observing I transferred all my records. The second visit was horrible. I had a long wait and nobody could find my lab, x-rays and other pertinent records which the doctor ordered during my first visit. I had to email them what I had after waiting an hour on the exam chair while they looked for them. The doctor didn't seem very concerned about the results and just recommended to get new glasses with the new prescription and didn't spend time on my other concerns. He kept leaving the exam room while the nurse looked for my files. If all you need is a new prescription, it serves its purpose. But if you have other concerns, you will have to advocate for yourself. I also asked for my file and never got it. The girls at the front desk made me wait for an answer on when I can get it while they talked about lunch. Overall experience? Very unprofessional practice. They need to train their staff better. Otherwise my new eyeglass prescription is very good but I still had to go to a specialist to assess my other concerns which I thought they were going to help me with.
