I like Dr Tafoya but the over booking leaves us in his office for about 11/2 - 2 hours Some times

Thank you DR Tafoya. When I arrived in Oahu for a two week visit with my daughter and family I suddenly developed an eye floater and flashes of light in one eye. I called my wife's retina specialist in Virginia and he said I needed to be seen immediately. Dr Tafoya was able to work me in and completed a thorough exam and determined it was not a dethatched retina and put my mind at ease for my visit. His office also forwarded all his exam results to my wife's retina specialist for me to follow up with. Thank you again. Floyd read more

He seems like a loser with good equipment. HMSA should should audit him. Medicare should audit him. The way it supposed to work is that you see the doctor first and have some kind of complaint that you want to have addressed. He would then do the necessary tests toward that complaint. Instead he'll just haphazardly do all the tests like an OCT , even if you had one at the last visit and don't want one this visit. It's as if He tries to find unrelated issues like glaucoma that we do not want to have examined at that visit. He has no bedside manner or sense of humor. Minimal explanations. Almost as if he has an autistic spectrum disorder, barely an empty stare at you and leave the room. read more

Not recommended. Second visit: I'd arrived at 1045 am for my 11 am appointment and I wasn't called until 1208 pm.....by telephone. Unbelievable! I walked out of the office at 12 pm because this type of patient schedule management is unacceptable, especially if your medical plan is being charged hundreds of dollars. Definitely not a returning patient and will not recommend this place to family and friends. I should have checked YELP before seeing this doctor. read more

I would seriously give his office a ZERO if I could! I arrived early to my appointment to be bombarded with paperwork to complete that literally took me 20 minutes. After filling the paperwork out, I was asked to take a picture of myself. I declined. I advised the staff they could use my drivers license. Clerk said it was drs policy. I said if its not it writing, I will not take a pic. After 15 minutes of waiting, a second staff member advised me it was drs policy to take a picture. I declined again! She asked if she could use my drivers license photo and I quickly agreed to the question with a "yes!" After waiting another 15 minutes, I kindly asked how much longer the wait was, since my appointment was scheduled at 3:00pm and it was now 3:45pm. Both staff members advised me that the dr refused to service me because I would NOT oblige to HIS unwritten policy. No, worries. Someone else will have my business! People should NEVER be forced to share a picture simply because you were verbally advised it is company policy. There are HIPAA laws in place for THAT kind of reason! read more

Pacific Retina Care is located in the Waikele Shopping Center. There is ample parking in front of the establishment. There is a large reception area and several chairs to sit down on. I have to wear glasses or contacts... or else I can't see! And I haven't sucked it up and gotten Lasik... yet. Anyway, my eye doc noticed some "white" areas upon examination of my eyes after being dilated. She was a bit concerned so I was referred here as this doc is the best of the best. It was a long process, but hey, you only have one set of eyes! I checked in and answered some questions, and then began a series of eye tests (close one eye and see this, blink when you see this, etc etc)... finally after an hour and a half I got to see the doc. He was professional, patient, and quite friendly. I liked that he explained each picture of my eye that he showed me and asked if I had any questions throughout the conversation. Great bedside manner! In the end, the "white" areas my first eye doc saw were perfectly normal as I'm nearsighted, and I guess when you're nearsighted your eyes 'stretch' more creating more "white". Was sent here by an urgent care dr. when I had a corneal abrasion. I will give his office a star for fitting me into their schedule that same day, staff was lovely. Dr. Tafoya barely spoke with me. He spoke to his scribe and when I asked a question he grunted and said wait till he's done. This was after hours of testing. I had no idea what was going on, but it seemed like bad news the way he was acting and I was getting nervous. Corneal abrasions don't usually require hours of testing and imaging. Dr. Tafoya misdiagnosed me with Macular degeneration in both eyes and set me up for injections in my eyes. I was shell-shocked. He said to follow his instructions and call him if I had any vision changes before the injection appointment. I spoke to my old dr who did not believe this diagnosis, so I went to see my old ophthalmologist on the mainland who requested Tafoya's records. I do not have macular degeneration. I had a third opinion done by a mainland retina specialist and again, no macular degeneration. He was horrified that I was scheduled for injections as they are only used when the dry macular degeneration turns wet (active bleeding). I had zero signs of that. Both mainland doctors reviewed all the images and notes from Tafoya extensively, they could not fathom how he came up with this diagnosis. I can't speak to Dr. Tafoya's motivation for giving me this devastating diagnosis but I'm glad I got another opinion. In all cases when you are given a devastating diagnosis and one that they are planning to treat, get a second opinion, and a third if you feel it is necessary. read more

Dr. Mark Tafoya is an excellent MD. The problem is the staff. Unprofessional they way they treat and talk to patients.

they overbook patients and you won't be seen on time. prepare to be waiting about an hour over your scheduled appointment and then another hour of eye tests and dilations. they'll call you in to do your initial tests and then send you back out into the waiting room (which is full of people that had the same appointment time and they're all staring each other down because they want to be called) then you'll wait another 30-45 mins to see dr tafoya. you already can't see anything and it's hot as hell in the office, there's fans all over the office, but they aren't on.‍ the frustrating part about it is that when you call to make the appt, no one tells you to plan on staying for 3 hours and bring a friend to drive you cause you WILL be getting your eyes dilated. Was referred to Dr. Tafoya after my optometrist saw a anomaly during my annual exam. Came here twice - once for orientation, and once for tests (I needed someone to come with me, since I would not be able to drive after having my eyes dialated). Both times I felt like I was on an assembly line - a flock of office staff all oriented to moving the doctor along to get the most patients seen as possible. And they still ran an hour or more late each time. At the end, all they did was refer me on to the next specialist. Then they kept typing to set up another appointment so I could tell them what the third doctor said? What value did you add to the process Dr. Tofoya? Why would I follow-up with you? Dr. Tafoya and his staff were totally outstanding and I'm so pleased after seeing him. Staff is very prompt, professional and pleasant. I found them to be on time and I had no issues, I even finished earlier than expected. Dr. Tafoya is thorough, explained everything in detail and checked if I had any questions. I am not a patient, but my dad was under Dr. Tafoya's care. I was there for his surgery and office visit. I was totally impressed. Pros: -Dr. Tafoya saved my dad's vision! -Beautiful office! He decorated it himself! Very warm and inviting. Good lighting, too. Unlike any other medical office I've seen. Everything looks really high tech. -Care: Dr. Tafoya really puts his patients first. He came in on a SATURDAY and SUNDAY just for my dad's eye emergency. -Organized: Dr. Tafoya gave my dad very specific directions for follow up care. Provided info that was easy to understand and even had the eye drop chart color coded. Also had contact info for someone who has rental equipment. -Dr. Tafoya is serious and soft spoken. I haven't met any of his staff, but I hope they provide good customer service. I'll post an update if I have the opportunity to interact with his staff. -Convenient location (Waikele between Office Max and KMart) with lots of parking. read more

Is it necessary to keep a patient 3 1/2 hours or are we over booking people. I understand it's serious but other people and patients have jobs and lives I don't think it's right the doctor keeps them that long. And when you make an appointment at a certain time you shouldn't have to wait two hours to get in something wrong with this picture read more

DON'T GO HERE!!! Terrible!!! Completely unacceptable!!! They gave my father an injection in his eye and didn't make sure he was numb before they stuck a NEEDLE IN HIS EYE!!!! WTF IS WRONG WITH U PEOPLE!!! I would give u zero stars if that was an option!!! read more

A couple weeks ago I found out I had a retina detachment in my right eye. My optometrist referred me to ophthalmologist Dr. Tafoya, which I am very grateful and fortunate that she did - he saved my eye! When I first walked into the office I noticed how clean and neat the waiting area was. The staff was very professional, friendly and efficient. Also, I was seen on time (unlike other doctor offices where you wait long and seen by the doctor for only five or ten minutes). Dr. Tafoya was very calm and thorough when explaining what had happened to my eye and what needed to be done. He was very patient with all the questions I had and made sure I understood what was explained. I've gone back a couple more times for follow up appointments after my surgery and always had the same treatment. Although the recovery was challenging, Dr. Tafoya and his staff were always very helpful and concerned and made me feel secure. The experience I had with my eye was unfortunate but I am confident now that my eyes will always have the best treatment. If you are experiencing any issues with your retina, Dr. Tafoya is the ophthalmologist to see. You will be a very happy patient! read more

Okay, I'll just say this right up front -- I WAS IMPRESSED! Medical and dental offices on Oahu aren't like those on the mainland. Overall, I haven't been impressed with them, and I'm often appalled at the clutter and dirt found in hospitals/dentists/doctors offices here. But, that is NOT what you will find at Dr. Tafoya's office. The building, grounds, and interior space are very clean, with plenty of parking near his door. His office is well organized and laid out for patient comfort. And the staff -- well, they are first class. They worked on an insurance problem before I arrived, and everything was smooth sailing from that point. The medical staff is friendly, professional, and efficient. I researched Dr. Tafoya's education, background, and medical standing, and I was pleased with everything I learned. It shows in the way he treats his patients. He is very knowledgeable, calm and reassuring. I plan to continue in his care and would HIGHLY RECOMMEND him to anyone with retina issues. read more

I had a horrible experience at this place. I was referred to Dr Tafoya after optometrist thought I should be checked because I was seeing black specks. It was frightening for me as I didn't know what was going on. I called and receptionist made me a 1pm appt pretty quick but the time was so near another medical appt (3pm) I had that I could not miss. So she spoke to her manager and they moved it up to 12:15. Said I would be done in time. Did not get into specifics on what was going to be done. I get there a little early 11:45am. Sat there til 1:15pm Dr Tafoya comes rolling in. Sat there for another a 45 mins while many other patients are coming & going before me. 2:15 pm they call me back and started doing eye chart test on both eyes...then had be go in another room and said they were going to dilate my eyes (both). WHAT?!?! Did not have the time to do that w/other appt at 3pm so they went to get Dr Tafoya. He comes in & from that moment on....got really ugly. He was the most unprofessional, most rude person/dr. He lectured and belittled me because I didn't want to do the dilation and when I told him I had another appt..made it sound like it was "my fault" I didn't have enough time! When I finally got to say something, I told him it was the receptionist...nothing. He asked who referred me to him, then remarked in an ugly tone that my optometrist was nothing to him..whatever that meant!? Then asked me why I was there!?? WTH? Told him I was already frightened this was happening to my eye already. He barked out other things but I won't go there. I was shocked at how he was speaking to me. The technician in the room was just standing there with this blank look on her face. He barked at her "Just make her another appt!" and walked out. NOPE...told her NO FRICKIN WAY! I'm out of here!! I think his title "specialist" got to his head. FYI...saw another "specialist"/eye surgeon and he along with his staff were so AWESOME!! Long wait time of more than 2 hours. Staff does not appeared well trained and look anxious. Provider appeared uneasy. Looks like they really overbook. There are so many patients waiting to be seen that it resembles an assembly line. The number of patients was so excessive that they were overflowing in the small waiting room, packed in like sardines waiting in the narrow hall and there were so many standing outside. Looked like many been standing and waiting for very long periods. The examination rooms are cluttered, counters did not look clean and one examination room has patient records and supply boxes stacked nearly to the ceiling. This may be a converted supply room. Office also looks like it has not been maintained and really needs repairs, with a leaking ceiling and massive stains, damaged walls and needing paint touchups. Patient privacy needs lots of work. Does not appear to respect patient privacy as receptionist discusses confidential information within hearing of the overflowing waiting rooms and staff discusses patient status while walking down the hall past waiting patients. Overall would not recommend until changes occur in protecting patient privacy, fixing rooms, better trained staff and compassionate care. read more

I wish I could give Dr. Tafoya and Pacific Retina Care more than 5 stars! They are that good! We live on Maui and my husband's eye Dr. realized that my husband's retina was detaching on a Friday evening. The eye doc recommended we travel to Oahu right away to meet with a specialist they partnered with. I set up airfare and continued to call their specialist. No answer (even though their website said they worked on Saturday). The eye Dr. had indicated a detached retina is an emergency that can irreparably cause eye damage. So, I started looking for specialists online and found Dr. Tafoya's name. He actually answered his phone and spoke with me quite a while (even though we were not current patients) and set up a meeting and surgery for the next day! We have had nothing but the best of care at Pacific Retina Care. The doctor's calm demeanor is wonderful. His knowledge and detail are even more extraordinary! He genuinely cares for his patients which is such a rare thing anymore!!! read more
