If I were to create a list of my favorite stores in Portland, Better Bargains is one that I would deliberate intensely on whether or not I should add it to the list. It's one of those hit or miss places that has potential for finding the bargain of the century. Don't visit during peak traffic because the business is on a section of Sandy that is impossible during rush hour. The parking lot is directly across from the intersection of 102nd and Sandy, and traffic backs up such that it blocks the entrance. You'll hate your life if you get trapped in this vortex of parking hell. The store has several aisles of furniture stacked high with assorted bits and pieces, and the east and west walls are covered with a patchwork of bagged treasures that are preassembled and priced accordingly. If you are big into art and craft projects, I've found some of these curated bags to be useful. It's best to visit the store on Wednesdays and Saturdays when a 25% storewide discount is applied toward all purchases. For me, the jury is still out on this thrift shop because I've yet to find a treasure I want to show off to all my friends. Maybe one day!

I added the item to my cart, paid for it, and waited. Then I waited some more and got a sinking feeling. So I called them a few times and no one ever answered. Then I emailed customer service and received no response. Their web site indicated my order was processing. The only way I could have any insight was to check and see if my credit card had been charged, which it was not. I knew this shirt was hard to find and got the feeling that maybe their inventory system had some issues. Finally I emailed them again and was told, oh yes, sorry, the item is out of stock after all. Oops. Great, thanks. And I guess if I hadn't been so persistent to figure out what was going on, it might have been a few more weeks before I found this out. First of all, why does your web storefront allow me to add an item to a shopping cart and pay for it if it is out of stock? It is very elementary, and expected that an operation like this should indicate which items and sizes are sold out. When I searched for this shirt on other web sites, they clearly indicated which sizes were available. The fact that they let me pay for this item and cool my heels wondering what was going on with no feedback until I spent days trying to contact them is sad. I called, I emailed, and nothing until I finally got a message. I certainly won't be shopping here again.

It wasn't immediately apparent to me at first, but each of the individual nooks/cubbies/displays throughout the shop are from different vintage vendors, so there is an assorted array of various styles and aesthetics to choose from, and not just clothing: books, home décor, furniture and more! There's even a station for brow, chin and lip waxing at the back, although it was not manned at the time of our visit. Another great feature is the tiered* pricing I mentioned above. Each article or item has three prices listed on it, ascending from lowest to highest, the idea being that you pay the price most accommodating to your financial situation. If your means are more limited at the time, pay the lower of the three; if you're doing well for yourself, pay the upper price. Doing just fine? Pay the average. It's a nice touch that addresses the struggle of our current economic condition, and honestly, even the top tier prices aren't outrageous. Program Shop has a little something for everyone, thanks to the piecemeal nature of its inventory, which adds to its charm. They appear to be relatively new to the neighborhood, but they're a welcome addition! I recently pulled the trigger on a Division Road x Dehen collab knit jacket in the whiskey color way. Beautiful jacket, feels amazing. It's finally cold enough to wear so I threw it on and kneeled down to put on my shoes and heard an audible rip. Sure enough there's a ~5" tear in the lining around the armpit. I'm a skinny guy and the jacket was unbuttoned & not tight. I can't believe that just a simple movement was enough to rip the seams like that. I've never once ripped any piece of clothing I was wearing from movement alone. Really disappointed considering the price point of the jacket and the fact the brand is renowned for its "durable, heavy duty, made in USA" products. I was excited to buy one of their varsity jackets in the future but now questioning that. This could have just been a fluke, or maybe their construction quality has dipped recently. Just wanted to post my experience as a warning for others. Their watch caps are still great though!
