Peters Valley School of Craft is definitely a hidden gem. I don't even remember how I found this…read moreplace, but as my father (almost 80) is a glass blower by trade and profession I thought he would enjoy checking it out while he was visiting from NC. We drove a little over an hour from NY a couple of weeks ago to see some of their workshops in action (available to see between 2pm and 5pm on weekends), as well as to visit their retail shop. The woman in the store was very friendly and gave us a map and information about where to go to see the workshops that were ongoing that weekend. We were able to see the blacksmithing and textile spaces and they are very impressive. We had a very quick tour of the blacksmithing area and heard a little about the workshop coming up later this year for teens (ages 13 to 17) before heading to the textile area, which was a little more remote. We had to drive over a mile on a dirt road with lots of pot holes. It just added to the appeal, being out in the middle of nowhere. The coordinator of the textile program (I can't remember his name) was so friendly and informative. He told us a lot about the program as well as the history of the organization (50+ years in this location). He showed us some panels on the wall that provided some information on a sister property that is being built just over the border in PA, and will open a lot more doors for them and what they can offer. The facilities he oversees includes 10+ looms and spinning wheels. After our tour we returned to the retail store. Yes, many of the items in the shop are pricey, but if you appreciate real craftsmanship you will understand it is worth supporting the artists who create items of this quality. Some of these specialties are lost arts. Growing up with my father and regularly attending art shows I understand the time and effort that goes into all of these handcrafted products. If you visit their website you will see all of the amazing workshops they offer. They also offer rustic accommodations to stay in for the duration of your workshop if you choose, as well as providing fresh made meals each day as part of your workshop cost. I would love to participate in one of their workshops some day. I wish I had taken some photos, but I will be back and will try and do so then. I didn't realize how beautiful the area would be. Would love to return for a morning of hiking before visiting this school again. Wish them so much success!

As of my updating this review, they no longer have the mask requirement and their hours are Fridays and Saturdays (10-6) and Thursdays, Sundays and Mondays (10-5). When I went there was a beautiful collaboration with the Milford Garden Club on display, please see some of my photos. They are still doing the wine and cheese receptions and those are usually held the second Saturday of every month at 6pm. I look forward to attending the next one. Located in the magnificent Forest Hall building at the intersection of Harford and Broad streets in downtown Milford, the Pike county seat, this artist's collective is a wonderful place to browse textiles, scultpure, photgraphy, blown glass, jewelry and more. Randall Fitzgerald is a photographer who features local Pike county images in many of his pieces, with other sojurns to Nantucket, Utah and several other scenic wonderlands he captures magnificently on film. Many lovely things can be found here, at all price points. I recommend making Forest Hall a priority when you come to town, for the Black Bear Film Festival, the Pear Festival, an event at Grey Towers, to dine at the Fauchere, go to the Llama Appreciation Day, see the Lincoln flag at the Historical Society, or any other reason. It's conveniently located in the center of town, one half block from Fretta's and a block from the Milford Diner.

It instantly transports me to somewhere in Europe and there are lots of plants to touch, smell, and otherwise explore. It also is adjacent to this cute greenhouse building. I'd love to return with a camera and a few rolls of film. The view of West Point from the back of the gardens is breathtaking. We visited on a Sunday and the back lawn was completely empty. We sat down and fed the baby with that magnificent view in the back. It was so blissful and perfect.

The main building was actually relocated to this site from further south and has a rich history of the initial construction, gradual decay, disassembly, resurrection, catastrophic damage, and aggressive renovation. The main plaster/cement ceiling in the upstairs library actually crashed down one evening a few years ago and damaged much of the home with plaster dust. Fortunately, charitable contributions have helped to restore most of the site as a 2026, except for vintage-era wallpaper and some furniture. We were fortunate to visit after a winter of intensive renovation, which allowed us to get a much better sense of the home. Displays in the adjacent visitor's center and grounds provide some interesting history, but you should really time your arrival to take a tour led by one of the volunteer docents. It is a beautiful home, which I would give 5-stars to if renovations were complete.

When I was remodeling my house in 1992 I wanted a picture to hang above my master bed. I went to a…read moreSugarloaf "juried" craft show and bought this piece because it reminded me of my farm past. It cost a pretty penny back then--$308--but I don't put a lot on my walls; thus, I wanted something nice. (Today, this sells for $495, matted and framed!) Fast forward to 2018: I noticed lots of "bubbles" in the original photograph, basically delaminations from the backing. I located the artist, Nick Zungoli, in upstate New York via the Internet and sent him digital shots of the piece in its less than perfect condition. He graciously responded that he would, without charge, send me another copy. Actually, this reproduction, above (I noticed on his site), had a sharper image than my original--due to digital reproduction, he said. I liked the muted colors of my original, but find this a little more exciting. I accepted his generosity and am pleased to sport the picture again on the wall. I am also pleasantly surprised and thankful that this artist stands behind his art work for 26-plus years!
