It was known as intu Eldon Square between 2013 and 2020 but following the collapse of intu, it has returned to its original name of Eldon Square. At the time of writing, Eldon Square is the 15th largest shopping centre in the country in terms of retail size, there is a much larger shopping centre, Metrocentre around a 10-15 minute drive away, but despite being smaller, I prefer Eldon Square, I still think the mall is a good size and it just seemed to have a better atmosphere, being in the city centre too rather than a soulless out of town mall. The mall has a great number of stores and brands including anchor retailers Fenwick, John Lewis and Marks and Spencer. Other brands located here include Apple, Boots, H&M, Next, Rituals and the major mobile phone/telecommunications networks. For food and drink, you have the likes of Starbucks, Nando's, Pizza Express, Ask Italian, Wagamama and TGI Fridays. The mall staff were friendly, and while there wasn't really anyone dotted around the mall, the help desk was easily to find so I could seek assistance finding a store. The layout of the mall is a little confusing and I think makes it seem bigger than it actually is - it can be quite a trek from the Bus Station to the Apple end of the mall. I do think the stores do shut a little early for the centre of a big city, between Monday and Saturday, the mall shuts at 7 pm, with some stores shutting as early as 6 pm including John Lewis. Thursday is an exception, where all stores tend to remain open until 8 pm, and Sunday is bound by Sunday trading laws so there's not much they can do there. 4* -

It is a little hidden on a side street, although I had no problem finding the store with Apple Maps on my phone. It's pretty much your typical Tesco Express - the layout felt familiar even though I have never visited this store before, I instantly knew where everything was. I could find the small number of items I came in for. There is also a Costa Express coffee machine at the front of the store. The staff seemed friendly enough, and the store was clear of clutter making it easy to get around. Prices are a little inflated - but again it's what you pay for in a "convenience" store. 4*

All the usual selections you would expect from a local convenience store. The fruit and veg took a hit when they shuffled things around last year so there seems to be a focus on less healthy options including ready meals, sweets and chocolates. Not somewhere where you would do a full weekly shop but for those items you've forgotten or last minute grabs it's ideal. The layout of the store isn't great with narrow aisles and often there are cages to be unloaded blocking the way. Similarly there are only two self service tills with the main tills not often manned until a massive queue forms. Staff are hit and miss....some are polite but others see it as a huge hassle that you might not want to use self service! Overall it does the job!!

I say good, not excellent, as there are a few gaps - it could do with a book/DVD/CD store as the selection in the supermarkets is limited to current hits and new releases. There are toilets in Sainsburys, by the exit near Johnsons the dry cleaners and down near Asda. Of the three, I recommend avoiding the ones near Asda as they often smell unpleasant! The car parking is free, with plenty of spaces at the Sainsbury and the Asda end, but the car parks are regularly patrolled and there is a three hour time limit and a no-return policy. Mind you don't get caught out as they do enforce it! ATMs are spread through the centre - Sainsburys, Barclays and the Co-op have machines outside and inside Northern Rock, HSBC, Halifax and Lloyds have them so you're never far from one. At the time of writing the centre is decorated for Christmas and Santas's postbox is popular with the children!

There is a medium sized ASDA and Sainsburys store and due to be a M&S simply food opening in 2014. There is 80 shops overall in the mall. The shops are fairly good there is the usual Greggs, boots, HSBC, Barclays and other well known retailers. The mall has not been able to keep up with the times though. Unfortuntaly it feels rather dated, South mall is newer though and more modern. However it's encouraging that the old Focus/B&M store has been knocked down and going to be a large shopping complex, M&S, Dunlem mill, PCworld/Currys coming soon. So in conclusion, fairly good mall nothing like metro centre or Eldon square but perfectly adqate.

Fenwick as a brand has 8 locations across the country and was founded here in Newcastle Upon Tyne. This location is their flagship. The store is open until 7 pm on most days, although opening hours can vary, this means they're generally open an hour later than John Lewis, which is the mall's other main department store. The store is fairly attractive, with modern and older parts and the selection again is reasonable. The renovation is starting to show which is ongoing to celebrate the store's 140th anniversary. The Food Hall area reminded me a little of a smaller version of Harrods, pricey for sure but they had a variety of items appearing to be high-quality, including some meats which looked of a fantastic quality. I much prefer the technology section at John Lewis nearby, however - although Fenwick for sure wins on the Food Hall side of things. 4*

It is a bit of a dingy old place if I'm being honest, but they have some killer sales sometimes, which go down well with Newcastle as the shop is usually pretty busy when they have reductions. The ground floor has a small beauty department at the front with clothing and shoes towards the back. There is a small stretch of basement as well which has the bed department. I never find myself buying ANYTHING in here but it is always good to browse around if you are on Grainger Street. Upstairs, they have the homeware department which is extensive. I think it covers the entire first floor! The actual products are a bit dated but they are going cheap at really affordable prices. I think I saw a JML stand too, which I've only ever seen before in Woolworths and BHS! Very rare! If you go upstairs again, then you will be smack dab in the centre of the electrical department. I must admit, it is slightly chilly up there as they usually have all of the fans turned on full blast which is a bit unsettling. Up on this floor is the restaurant which looks fairly decent for what it is. It also boasts big windows with views over Grainger Town. But I have never eaten here so I do not know what the food is actually like. As the final remnant of the 20th century High Street, it does a great job and is worth a visit every once in a while.
