So, I went to Kansas for work. I knew I would have limited time to explore, but I wanted to check out at least one attraction. So, of course, when in Kansas, you think of The Wizard of Oz, or at least I do. Upon doing some research, I saw that there was an Oz Museum. Just to let you know, I enjoy watching The Wizard of Oz. I have no idea how many times I've seen it, but when it comes on, I will watch it like I've never seen it before. Anyway, on my last day in Kansas, we decided to take a trip to the museum; it was about 20 minutes from my work site. It was in a little small town. When we parked, I was super excited to go in and begin the fun. We were greeted by a sweet employee by the name of Sydney! She was so sweet. Sydney, if you are reading this, thank you for your warm welcome and making our trip one to remember. Tickets were only $10.00, and she gave us a little introduction before she opened the doors, and we did a self-guided tour through the museum. You can literally get through the museum in like 10 minutes if you are in a hurry, but we took about 30 minutes just to take things in, get photos, ready and just take it in. When I tell you I was excited to be there, I was excited. There is even a little movie theater you can go sit in and watch the movie. I enjoyed seeing the characters in person from the movie, learning about the cast, things that took place on set, and just reminiscing myself in an all-time classic! At the end of the tour, there's a gift shop with some really cool items. We bought t-shirts and other cool souvenirs. There was also like a hurricane funnel you could pay to enter to feel like you're just the tornado that is seen in the movie that turned the house upside down in the movie, but we couldn't figure out how to get it to work... lol. Man, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I'm not sure if work will bring me back to Kansas, but this is a trip I'll never forget! I have so many pictures, so check them out below! Visit the world of Oz without taking the tornado house ride. Meet Dorothy, Toto and the whole gang (the scarecrow, tin man and the cowardly lion) as you follow the yellow brick road (you know you want to break out in song) to find the wizard. This Oz Museum is definitely a great stop from a road trip my husband and our little girl dog were taking, on our way to Kansas City. According to the friendly employee who greeted us, well behaved small dogs are allowed in this museum, however have to be carried or placed in a pet stroller (but it seems that dogs are allowed to walk around with you on leash in the gift shop). But there is also an option for your pet (and larger dogs) to stay in the office so you can visit (please don't leave your pets in the car). This museum was founded in 2004 and has over 20,000 pieces of Wizard of Oz related memorabilia, including rare artifacts like the original MGM 1939 movie production notes and props from the Broadway musical Wicked. The museum has more than 2000 items on display that rotate throughout the year with all their other items. Going through the museum, we learned a lot of very interesting facts about the movie and production. I had no idea that Wizard of Oz was part of a children's series written by L. Frank Baum. It was interesting to learn that there were 4 directors that worked on the film. Did you know that Shirley Temple was the first choice to play Dorothy? The first director actually dressed Judy Garland (who played Dorothy) in a blond wig and had her wear very heavy make up, similar to the look of Shirley Temple. But that was scraped when the next director came in. Also with the famous "Over the Rainbow" scene was originally cut from the preview of the movie by the studio chief. But one of the producers of the film had threatened to leave if he did not put that scene back in. Toto was also played by a female dog named Terry that initially had behavior problems. But worked with a trainer and became the beloved and well known dog that we know today. Judy Garland actually tried to buy Terry, but the trainer (who actually adopted Terry) refused. We spent close to 90 minutes in this museum, watching the videos to learn more about history and behind the scenes. We also read nearly every little description card. This museum truly was a great break from the road and such a wonderful visit. We enjoyed taking photos with the numerous of figures that are perfect for you to post on your social media and Yelp. After your visit, I would highly recommend you walk across the street to check out the "Yellow Brick Road", a fun (free) and cute little brief review of the storyline. And if you have time, check out the Oz Winery and Toto TacOz next door. Please note that there are clean restrooms in the gift shop. The museum cost $10 for adults ($9 for students and military) and $8 for children ($7 with military discount). Children 2 and under get in for free. Plenty of free street parking out front.
We drove two hours from Missouri to visit the Oz Museum when visiting Kansas. Although it's a little simple the details of the statues and memorabilia make it all worth it. You can walk through it fairly quickly or take more time looking at all the museum holds. We loved it and were glad we made the trip. The cost is only $10 and they also have a souvenir shop to purchase items. There's a cute little walk way across from the museum as well you can walk through to look at more wall art. There's also a little cafe at the end of the road.
Growing up "Dorothy" means a lifetime connection to The Wizard of Oz. So when business brought me to Kansas, I had to take the 2.5 hour drive to the Oz Museum. Though small, the $10 entrance fee was worth that and so much more. The customer service was Exceptional!! I called ahead to make sure they would be open for my 3:30 pm arrival. The young lady was polite & let me know they would indeed be open until 5 pm. Parking was easy (free) and right in front. They have an Oz store you can shop before or after your adventure inside. The museum is informative and covers lots of things I didn't know about the movie (or books the movie was based on). If you go, be sure to pack a lunch for the ride there and check out The Yellow Brick Road across the street.
"There is nothing to do in Kansas" "why would you go to Kansas?" The Oz Museum, that's why. I'm making it a life goal to say I have visited every state in the US and we needed to find something to do in Kansas. I looked online and suggested we go to Wamego which is about an hour and 45 minutes away from Kansas City. You will know exactly where the museum is because it's right in the middle of downtown and it's the only emerald green building. When you walk in you immediately see different items from the movie. The tour was only 8 dollars which was a steal. The museum consisted of different props from the movie, life size figures of the characters and even a movie theater where you can watch the Wizard of Oz. The museum itself only took 30 minutes to walk through the whole thing but that is really all you need especially with the low ticket cost. Every time someone tells me Kansas has nothing to offer, I always tell them to check out the Oz Museum.

They have everything from all the original books and movie memorabilia, not just from the original movie but every iteration of Oz. Highly recommend taking a trip if you love the movies.
We stopped by here yesterday afternoon on a road trip, and decided to go in and check it out. We were greeted by a really friendly, helpful employee who's name I didn't catch. The outside of the building is really cool, and well kept. The inside is clean & organized too. The restrooms were spotless as well. It's definitely a cool place to go check out if you're in the area and the yellow brick road right across the street is a fun touch too!
Did you really visit Kansas if you didn't do anything Wizard of Oz related?? This museum is super underrated and so fun! It's small, we got through it in about 30 minutes, but it's only $9 for a ticket and has a lot of cool stuff to see on the inside. You'll find life-size figures of the characters, merchandise collections, and even a mini theater inside that plays the film. They also had all kinds of fun gifts/trinkets to look at as well! The museum is in the very small town of Wamego, not far from Manhattan, but is only about 15 minutes off of the interstate... a great stop for road-trippers!
If you're ever traveling on I70 through Kansas, you have to stop. The museum is full of memorabilia along with life size figures. So much history included about the making of the movie including a 30 minute video narrated by Oz historian. The Wizard of Oz movie is also playing on a loop in small theater in back. Your ticket is good for entire day so you can leave and return if you want. Also, gift shop has lots of cute items including ruby red slippers.

Surely it wouldn't make sense to pull off the interstate and drive 15-20 minutes out of our way to see this? Yes, yes it does. Grab the wheel and turn now... From the cool exterior of the building nestled amongst a real thriving Main Street, to the enthusiastic employees and neat gift shop. We thought we knew a lot about this classic movie, turns out we knew hardly anything. Once immersed in the land of Oz we walked through many exhibits and saw props that were actually used in the movie as well as recreations that helped tell the story. I know you're still probably thinking this will be cheesy...do it. You'll take lots of cool photos and see something that's most will never get a chance to see. After all, when will you be back again in Kansas...in the Land of Oz...
I've been to a lot of niche museums but The Oz Museum is my first one devoted to a movie. According to my Google search for the USA, there are just five such movies that have become such cultural touchstones that a brick and mortar museum carries their legacy: Gone with the Wind, A Wonderful Life, A Christmas Story and Star Wars. The town of Wamego has tied their wagons to The Wizard of Oz and are capitalizing on this 1939 technicolor masterpiece. The museum is $10 and can easily be experienced in an hour; less for the more casual observer. There is a short film just past the entrance that provides a great starting point on how this movie became iconic. After the film there are multiple rooms with replicas of the main characters and tons of memorabilia from the movie and related pop culture from the following decades. Is it worth the 10 minute drive from I-70? Sure! Is it worth a 2 hour drive from Kansas City? Only for diehard movie buffs.
Our family had an amazing time at the Oz Museum! From the yellow brick road to the interactive exhibits, every corner was full of magic and fun. The kids loved the characters and we all enjoyed learning about Oz history. Friendly staff, great photo ops, and a gift shop full of whimsical treasures made it a perfect family outing. This was a fun stop on our road trip. The girls who work there were so friendly. They have lots of cool memorabilia. The info played on a couple of the tvs was informative. Clean bathrooms too. The shop has gifts for everyone. The town is so cute. If it weren't raining we would have spent more time hanging out. read more

The front desk staff were so friendly and even recommended a coffee shop and nice hotel for our drive back through from CO. The museum was organized nicely and there was something about it that made it feel fresh and modern. The gift shop had some really appealing items for purchase. We bought outfits and slippers for the girls among other things. The walk through the museum was entertaining for all ages, 6 to 64! I recommend walking down the yellow brick road across the street. Also, there are several places outside the museum that are Oz themed (winery, taco restaurant, and more). read more

There were no locks on the Bathroom door. Little kids kept on opening the door on me and opening the main door and so people could see my bear butt from outside the bathroom. In the bathroom there was poop and pee and maybe even diarrhea all over the floor and toilets. The Workers would not help me clean up the pee I missed so I left it for the next person. Horrible service and the dolls are fake. I do not recommend it. read more

What negative thing could I possibly say? This is exactly what I was expecting it to be and it was super cute. It's a great way to spend 30 minutes if you're passing through town. I wouldn't go out of my way however. I'll reiterate what most have said previously. It's not much in the way of original costumes or props but more of an informational tour regarding the making of the film and some info about the book. The memorabilia is cool though! I was excited to take some pictures. The gift shop offers the expected. The employees were extremely kind as well. I believe their names were Sarah and Kaitlyn. Thanks for the suggestions ladies! Look, it's a cheap tourist trap, not a real museum. It's basically a gussied up gift shop, folks -- let's call a spade a spade and be done with it. But if you haven't changed your travel plans to get off the highway and see this hot mess, that's okay. (Don't get on that off ramp if you want to stay on track to a major city nearby and skip this kitschfest.) But if you're stuck here in Wa-Honkin-Mego, Kansas and bored out of your gourd and looking for something to just DO? And have nine bucks on hand for the admission? (C'mon -- help keep the utilities paid, people.) Well, you could do worse, I reckon. Mebbe. I dunno. Probably. (This is the world's most passive-aggressive four star Yelp review EVER. I had to constantly tell my children to stop going into the bathroom stall because it had no lock and there was a man in a Joe Burrow jersey taking a dump. It was also filthy and had pee and poop everywhere the poop got stuck on my kid's shoes and I had to clean it off. read more
Come on now I went in with realistic expectations and still loved this place. Not Cheesy at all and and some great history. The line can get a little long at the front counter but they have some great tourist stuff in the front lobby (Ruby Red Bedroom Slippers, Snow Globes etc). I know you think the big town of Wamego, but the history in and around this place is pretty amazing and you throw in a OZ MUSEUM, Life does not get much better. Step into the movie theater and watch the Wizard of Oz on loop (Wish they served Popcorn), had been a while since I had seen it and enjoy the crap out of it. When you finish up go have some Taco @ Toto's or come here after either way it is worth the drive from Manhattan, Junction City or even as far as Charlotte, NC (US) to come and visit for the day! We came here so it would fulfill my wife's little childhood heart. When you drive up, the building sticks out as it's painted emerald green. They want you to know the museum is there. When you walk in, the gift shop is the first thing you hit. There's a lot of cute things there to see and buy if you wanted. The front desk employee was so sweet. She gave us a penny to press. She gave advice on which penny would work better because of the metal used. She's the white female, brown hair thin. Sorry I didn't get her name. After buying your ticket, she gives a little talk about the city of Oz and the surrounding business. When you enter Oz, it's just different movie things, quotes, figurines, dresses and movie facts. It's a cute little thing to observe if you're really into the Wizard of Oz. Personally I never was. But not a bad thing if you are. It's a cool place to visit for your child or the inner child in you. read more
What is possibly more iconic than the Wizard of Oz when passing through Kansas?! This museum hold over 200 years of memorabilia of all things Oz related. From posters to movie set props to dolls - if you're a fan of the classic movie you have to stop by here. There are also a lot of fun places to take pictures and pose with your favorite characters. Take your love for Oz one step further by getting to learn about its history and all things related to the iconic franchise. We also stopped at one point of the self guided tour to rewatch a part of the movie. The museum portion costs $9 a person and if you're a veteran, student, or child you pay two dollars less. read more

So fun! Just outside Topeka in rural Kansas this place is definitely worth a stop! Over 13,000 artifacts of the Wizard if Oz with multiple video summaries and the full movie playing in a small theater. We spent around 40 minutes total in the museum and gift shop. The staff were very friendly and super knowledgeable. We were driving across the state and stopped on a whim. So glad we did! read more

For $9 admission, I guess it's ok. They tout a few thousand artifacts, but most of what's there are either replicas or things that didn't come from the movie. They've got a soldier's jacket, a pair of glasses, Glinda's broach, and a few other actual pieces. You can kill an hour if you walk slow through the loop but probably not more than that. If you're passing through (we were on our way back to Lawrence after seeing Manhattan), it's not terrible, but unless you're a big Wizard of Oz fan, it's probably not worth an extreme detour. If I was paying $15-20, I'd think it was a ripoff, but if my $9 helps to keep the lights on, sure...I'll donate. read more
So fun! You can go to this museum and watch the movie in the back theater. They welcome you and tell you the history, then you get transported into the land of Oz! It was fun walking through the museum and seeing all the different collections! The outside of the museum is beautiful and very photo worthy! Their gift shop is fun and unique! read more

If you a fan of the wizard of oz this is the place for you. They have scenes that show how the character were introduced. They even have a theater where you can watch the movie. The museum is cool... ooo they have the ballon basket to do a photo op. Cute place if you into the movie check it out . Also across the street is the yellow brick road.. that is the only thing that was missing from the museum. read more
