We are so glad that we found ORVH to take care of our kitties! We first met them in February of this year when our 10 year old cat, Jamie, suddenly took seriously ill. Dr. Klemmer and the entire staff worked tirelessly to try and figure out what was going on but unfortunately it was soon determined that he had a mass in his abdomen. The next day we had to make the hard decision to say goodbye. The following month we took our other 11 year old cat, Alex, in for his annual exam with Dr. Klemmer. We explained that we were concerned because he had been vomiting and losing weight lately and she immediately recommended running a senior blood panel on him because the one he'd had in 2022 showed that his thyroid had been borderline overactive - which our previous vet had never told us about. Sure enough, he now has full blown hyperthyroidism. We immediately started on a medication for his thyroid and a prescription kibble for sensitive stomachs and he is back to his usual energetic self and is now at a healthy weight with a glossy coat. Last month we discovered a small lump on his right front leg which we had the surgeons at ORVH remove last week. He is doing very well, and although it did turn out to be a soft tissue sarcoma and may come back down the road we are very confident that with the wonderful doctors and staff like Carl at ORVH he will live to be a sweet old kitty. The best part is that we are now looking forward to bringing a new (adopted) kitty to them in the next few months. Thank you ORVH for everything!!! read more

Over many years and many visits, I've found ORVH to be very competent, compassionate and easy to work with.

This office is amazing. I have been going there since I moved to the area 12 years ago. I had to take my St Bernard there last week and with this Covid19 happening it was so easy to have him seen there procedures were easy to follow and they took great care of my dog! Amazing staff!!! read more

Brought my 8 year old Airedale in for a new patient visit because she had been having on and off issues with diarrhea for a few weeks and our previous vet had left the practice we had been going to and I did not like the new doctor I chose this facility because it was close to home and had good ratings online. My baby girl was diagnosed with anaplasmosis and Lyme disease and was dead within 40 hours of our visit. I was told by Dr. Devine that her platelets were low and we were given oral antibiotics and probiotics and sent home with a caution to make sure to keep her out of situations were she could injure herself. 26 hours later after multiple episodes of vomiting, loss of equilibrium and so weak she kept falling over we were at the emergency vet. The vet at the emergency clinic asked if I knew what her platelet count was the previous day as within 26 hours, she had none and indicated that if they were too low my dog should have been hospitalized and not sent home. I requested the notes from the Oyster River and found out her platelets at our visit has been only 15,000 when the normal range is 143,000 to 400,000. Per my research, that of calling multiple other providers, anything under 40,000 is considered critical and should be in the intensive care unit at the clinic and treated with a blood transfusion and carticosteroids. Wether it was due to our being there on a Saturday and no one wanted to stay in order for her to hospitalized, staffing issues in general or that they simply didn't have the facilities for that level of care but if any of these were the case, I should have been directed to the emergency vet immediately. If she was beyond the point that any of these things would have helped, then be straight with me and prepare me that I was taking her home to die. Fast forward to getting a new dog (my house doesn't feel like a home without a dog) and we brought her in for her 12 week shots, brought up excessive itching and questioned possible fleas. She find a small amount of flea dirt and we treated with the suggested Simparica Trio at which time the doctor recommended keeping an eye on her ear as it looked irritated. Went back in 3 weeks for her booster shot, told the tech I was questioning ear mites, that we had looked but didn't see anything and that we wanted a professional to check. Dr. Devine stated she looked in her ears with the scope and found nothing but her ear still looked irritated. That night when we went to bed we noticed she had a cut in her ear from all the scratching. Took her to the emergency vet and 20 minutes later I am being told she has a yeast infection and sent home with medication. So are the techs at Oyster River doing the exams or is this an incompetent veterinarian so inept she can't diagnose an ear infection? Can't help but wonder if my baby girl would still be here if I had gone elsewhere but I had the distinct misfortune to have chosen this facility. read more

Added 11/5/13: I was astonished to open my Yelp account this morning and read a comment from the clinic stating that I asked the veterinarian to do something unethical. What I asked her to write was a letter stating that my cat is stressed out by boarding, which is true. I was unable to request that my usual veterinarian write the note because of the time frame of our move, and we wouldn't have received it in time. I asked the veterinarian to do this in order to smooth the process of moving our cat to Hawaii with us, because I did not want to board him for 3+ weeks while we waited to get on post housing. My husband is in the Army, and all personnel are forced into the same hotel without regard for where their pets will go. The vet explained to me during our visit why she would not write the letter, and while I accepted her response I still feel that what I stated below is true. She did not take the time to truly understand what I was asking for, or even make the effort. The fact that she does not even know why I asked her to write the letter (i.e., it was not for my employer) suggests to me that my previous comment about her not listening is right on the mark. Now she is having her office workers attack me personally in a way that I find to be dishonest and misleading. Take from this experience what you will, but to me it suggests that this veterinary practice does not value its clients, new or otherwise. Take your business elsewhere-- I certainly wish that I had. Original Review: I had trouble deciding how many stars to put because I had a really mixed experience here. I grew up in Lee and my parents brought our pets to this clinic 20 years ago-- obviously it has changed hands since then, and I decided to give it a shot as my husband and I were passing through town on our way to his new duty station. We needed a health certificate and application of Frontline to get our cat to Hawaii. Most of the stars are for the vet techs and office assistants. The girls there are awesome! From my first phone call to our last check out, I have nothing but nice things to say about the assistants. Major points lost for the doctor we saw. She is their specialist in herbs/acupuncture, and also their USDA certified vet who would be doing our health certificate. She is only there one day a week. I understand that it is difficult to meet new patients that you will never be seeing again, but my major problem with this doctor is that she didn't listen. She assumed that she knew what I was going to ask/say and was responding with her own preconceived notions. I think she could have done much better about taking the time to talk to us and TRY to understand what we were asking for. I left our first visit feeling upset and like I had been judged and found wanting. My husband and I agreed that when we move back to the area in a few years this will not be our vet. read more

I am so impressed with Oyster River Vet! They are very thorough with my girls. Sometimes it isn't the news I want to hear, but I know it will save their lives. My Daisy was dx with Cancer, early detection saved her life. My Lacey had an issue with her protein and by changing her diet we were able to bring the levels down. They are always there to answer a question, no matter how small it may be. I would recommend them in a heartbeat! read more

The doctors and staff at Oyster River Vet are OUTSTANDING! They have taken wonderful and compassionate care of our pets for nearly 20 years. Recently, one of our cats had an adverse reaction to a flea treatment, and they worked tirelessly for weeks until they secured a full reimbursement of our vet costs from the flea treatment company. I took one of my two cats to meet Dr. Childress for the first time yesterday, and we were not disappointed! Since moving back to the area from Providence, RI, I had struggled to find a vet that gave me the same feeling I used to get at the animal hospital I worked at down there. After calling to schedule an appointment and talking with Misty, I had a good feeling about this place. This feeling was only enhanced when I was greeted by a smiling Tammy as soon as I walked in the door. She brought myself and my scaredy cat Finn into a room right away. Everyone was so sweet to my terrified little man! They spoke in calm voices, pet and cuddled him with such care. They helped him make it through his exam like a champ! Thirty minute appointments, thorough examinations and explanations by the doctor, and compassionate technicians were exactly what I was looking for, and I've finally found it at ORVH. The cost is a little more than what I paid at other local vets, but it is 100% worth no longer having to deal with rude technicians and doctors who rush you through 15 minute appointments. The quality of care and the staff at ORVH are exactly what I've been searching for, and I am extremely pleased. I have already made an appointment for my other cat's routine checkup at this wonderful hospital. I'd give Oyster River Veterinary Hospital 10 stars if it would let me! read more

This vet gets no stars from our family. The only reason I marked 1 star is because the review doesn't post with NO stars. Dr Karen Woodberry's approach with our animals was detached at best. The lack of compassion & negligence by Oyster River Vet is something I hope this review will prevent others from experiencing. Our last experience was a misdiagnosis of our dog's broken leg. Our 12yr old dog tried to stand up in the exam room & her leg collapsed out from her. It happened in front of the vet who still felt she only "tweaked" her leg though she admittedly witnessed our dog yelp in pain & admitted potential bone cancer. After examining her, she assured us there was no break though she never did an x-Ray. Instead, we were sent home with meds for our dog's anal sac issues & told to call if her leg seemed worse in a few days. When we called back 1st thing the next morning to report it was much worse, as well as our dog had stopped eating, drinking & was not using her swollen leg, we didn't hear back until from Dr Woodberry until the afternoon. Her reasoning for the delay in getting back was simply "sorry that's how things can go around here." We were later told the call was not noted & communicated as urgent. By the time we got a call back, our dog was already under proper care of a vet ER whom at 1st touch of her leg diagnosed it as broken & swollen & immediately apologized that we had to go through this. He immediately followed with an x-Ray which confirmed the break as well as a massive tumor in that shoulder and late stags of bone cancer. Our sweet dog had to be put to sleep. Sadly, nobody including the Dr Woodberry could've prevented the outcome of the bone cancer, though as a vet in care of another life Dr Woodberry could have not assured me my dog was fine when I strongly suggested otherwise. She could've displayed the compassion any animal deserves and listened to her patient as well as used her common sense and medical expertise to have done the X-ray & prevented the extra suffering that our dog had to endure. She could've called back that morning to address her patient's immediate need for care. No matter what is learned from this experience or what policies Oyster River might change as a result of it, I still would not entrust care to her or this office. We have since moved to another veterinarian office. read more

We have been using this vet for 20 years and 5 dogs and, with the exception of one vet who is no longer there, we have always received caring and attentive service. We have noticed a change since the previous owner in that most of the staff has turned over and we miss all the old familiar faces and the doctors who knew our pets and our history so well. Also the prices have increased (who's haven't?) and there are no longer any special "comps" given, i.e. sometimes the vet would clip the dogs nails for free, little things like that are all gone and/or charged for. But that is the way of the world today. The staff of all levels have always been patient and understanding, especially dealing with my husband who can become quite anxious when bringing the dogs in. Because we are happy where we are, I haven't taken time to price out other vets in the area. If you do that and you find that most have similar rates, then I would highly recommend this organization.
