My family's experiences with Russell Animal Hospital - both before and after it became part of VCA…read more- have always been positive, including the care we received when our cat needed to be euthanized, regular visits for another young cat we rescued (who is now 12), and most recently for a puppy we added to our family. They are thorough, have stellar follow-up and the whole team is professional and kind. Very happy with the care our pets get here!

I've waited 3 months to write this review as I didn't want it to be out of spite or anger . My…read morefirst thought was to go into great detail about my family's experience with Russell's Animal Hospital but decided to make a long story short .....My daughter & Son-in-law had an 11 year old golden retriever. He was brought to Russell's in January with several health concerns including fear of cancer . He also had a large mass on his sternum. He was in and out of Russell's for numerous tests and bloodwork that they suggested from Jan 2025 into May 2025 . Test after test and bill after bill and over 3,000$ in Doctor fees , tests , etc. Russell's failed to find the cancer that eventually took his life on Memorial Day Weekend. Once it got to the point that he wasn't sleeping or eating my daughter & son-in-law took him to the Caves Emergency Hospital in Concord NH and in less than 20 minutes and a fee of 150$ vs 3,000$ ( not exaggerating) the doctor on duty was able to thoroughly diagnose him & gave us the sad news that he had a cancerous tumor that was bleeding and it may be time to consider euthanizing him . I Don't blame Russell's for the cancer and I don't know if the outcome would of been any different, but if Russell's would of done their job & been more thorough in finding his cancer there may of been treatment options available to us , but at the very least my daughter and son-in-law could of spent more quality time and been able to say goodbye over a longer period of time, Rather than getting blind sided and having 1 hr to say goodbye on a rainy cold Sat morning on the floor of the Cavs emergency room . Although Russell's did allow me a 2 hour meeting with one of there long time Doctors to voice my concerns and answer my questions, I must say I walked away feeling as if they accepted no responsibility for not finding the cancer , and offered no sincere apologies. I'm sorry to say but " SHAME ON YOU RUSSELLS!!! " you dropped the ball . In my opinion you were too focused on " Taking the round about way " ringing up bills and rushing through tests than being more thorough and finding our poor dogs cancer . WE TRUSTED YOU WITH OUR BELOVED DOG & YOU LET US DOWN!! With that being said I COULD NOT AND WOULD NOT RECOMMEND RUSSELLS ANIMAL HOSPITAL TO ANYONE!! . If you do bring your pet there , be extremely careful , and bring the credit cards because they love to stack up the bills . I truly pray that your experience with Russell's has a much better outcome than our families .

But yes, they were wonderful during that time. So bedside manner is fantastic and they are friendly. Since then???? I'm so angry right now! Our present dog was diagnosed with advanced cancer and given a month to live. She was diagnosed at the emergency vet clinic in Lebanon (fantastic, by the way. Highly recommend). We've been managing her symptoms and keeping her comfortable. She's done extremely well so far but today is a really bad day. Because we live about an hour from Lebanon, we called our regular vet, Charlestown Vet, hoping that they could refill her antinausea meds. Of course not. After being on hold for about 10 minutes, they said that they couldn't refill anything without seeing the dog. This is a tactic that every vet does. I know, I used to work for vets and yeah... they want to see the dog $$$$$. But besides that, they failed to diagnose her cancer in the first place, something they've done before. They didn't think that they needed to listen to the owner (my daughter), who told them during her last visit that she had concerns. When we tried to get in to see the vet for follow ups, we couldn't get an appointment! Okay... we were fine until we weren't anymore. And by the way... my daughter found the antinausea meds online! Thank you, Charlestown vet for caring for our dog so well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't bring your dog or cat there! Seriously! It's sad that I have to leave this kind of a review. I respect veterinarians but this??? NO!!!!

We had an appointment today with one of the new doctors, Dr. Ramsey, and he went above and beyond to make sure both of my boys were taken care of. He did a thorough ear exam for both of them when I let him know that I was concerned - and even offered to clip one of their nails while he was behaving on the scale when I mentioned how much trouble I have doing it at home! He even gifted both of them with bandanas after a long visit. Thank you Dr. Ramsey and Charlestown Vet! Special shoutout to Olivia and the two other techs who gave both my boys a ton of love and treats while cleaning out their ears! You guys are the best!

Now that Banfield is in the mix they make their employees sell, sell, sell to make money off unsuspecting pet owners. One's bad, the other's worse.

It seems SBAH has taken on too many clients and can no longer support existing patients. For context, our pup is currently experiencing a rapid-onset illness. While scheduling is certainly complicated through Covid, SBAH claims they are unable to schedule any new sick-visit appointments for two months due to an overcrowded schedule. A two month wait time for a sick-visit is certainly unreasonable from any vantage-point, and their response to our push for an earlier time slot was "we have this talk with an upset client everyday, it is just how it is". There also seemed to be the reliance of blaming Covid-protocols, but 6+ months into Covid and currently-loosening restrictions, it seems like a strange crutch to lean on. Generally, we have noticed a decline in services since the practice was purchased by the Banfield Network, and this has been the forcing function to ultimately leave the practice. To other Boston dog owners: this is a situation that we never thought to consider. So while well-visits / check-ups can be scheduled far in advanced without issue, reconsider enrolling at this practice if you plan to rely on them when it really matters. It was a poor-feeling to be denied help when we really needed our vet's advice =/
