There's a small privately owned island in the center, the owners are super friendly as long as you keep the island clean and clean up the mess you make. So don't ruin it for the other party people. Definitely worth checking out if you have the opportunity. Just mind the no wake zones.

The one I stopped at had a small waterfall for about a two mile roundtrip, with the option to go several miles farther. There wasn't any fee to enter (unlike the state park).

DO NOT STAY IN THE CABINS!!…read more Last night my wife and I swept the walls and floors of lady beetles flushing them down the toilet, since they are invasive. Around two we got to sleep. A few times we got woke up by a bite of two but most were gone or so we thought. We woke up to find the windows covered with them. We called again to ask for help and they sent down a housekeeper. After talking to a few employees we found out this has been an ongoing problem and that many people have cut their stay short. As I understand from what was said to me the management here is fully aware and wants to ignore the problem hoping it goes away instead of addressing it. This is a bad look for Alabama. If I travelled all the way here to stay in these lovely cabins and paid what we paid only to be swarmed by Asian Lady Beetles I would not recommend this beautiful park to anyone. It's not the bugs that give this a two. It's the attitude and lack of action by the management that got them that. The only reason the got a two is the cabin and park are beautiful.

The walk to Bald Rock is extremely easy, but there are areas along the boardwalk where you can step down into the woods and rocks if you like. For us, the highlight of our visit to the area was a hike to Pulpit Rock. That hike is a bit more strenuous, but still very short. I have indicated with a red dot on the map photo where this hike begins. The views are phenomenal. We actually enjoyed this hike the most. Keep your children on a leash.

The facility was about 45 minutes from the FEMA training center in Anniston, Alabama, so being bused back and forth was a bit of a drag. You can expect that on deployments. Anyways, I've sidetracked. The facility here is really cool. It has a large conference center and a beautiful lake with many recreational activities for the whole family. It also has several large housing buildings that are setup like hotels. The rooms are 3 star with some having sleeping quarters for up to 6 people (2 bunk beds and a full size bed) perfect for families with children. The rooms do not have TV'S so they are perfect for wholesome family time. WIFi is also available!

Jamey Furnace is a cool Civil War relic that is still standing. It in itself is neat to look at but…read morethey also have a museum (which I did not get to see), there is a walking trail and playground, along with a civil war memorial. There is a big field where they do civil war re-enactments too. Taking a quick walk around on the paved walking trail, I first went to see the furnace. It's amazing that it is still standing! Up behind it is an old house from the 1800s which they have moved to this site and restored. There are pictures of the family who lived there and some history about it. Behind that was some big shed looking buildings which I was unsure of the reason for. Overall it's a nice place to stop at but i wouldn't make a long trip to see unless you are a civil war aficionado. If I lived closer I would probably use it more often for kids to play, walking/ jogging, or picnics when the weather is nice. Minus a star because the landscape is not perfectly kept. It is pretty well maintained and I'm sure they do the best they can with the funding available. That being said you can tell the creators/ caretakers have a vested interest and care very much about this little park. If you are nearby it is worth taking a stroll through for sure. You might even come across a random person strolling about in civil war regalia while on his cell phone like I did!
