OK, Where to start:
It's hard to rate this park, because you have to do it in two parts.
Part 1: The natural beauty of the place is spectacular. Beautiful views of the surrounding mountains, hiking trails through lush forests to ancient rock outcroppings with gorgeous views. One is a boardwalk trail that is handicap accessible and very well built. The rock in this area dates to the pre-Cambrian era and is fascinating. Beautiful foliage and plant life. In my opinion, just as beautiful as the Smokies further north and closer for me as a Gulf Coaster! We had been to this park about four times over the past 20 years or so, and just got back 6/23/13 from our last trip. I could go on and on about the natural beauty of this area. The motel, restaurant, cabins and chalets are built from stone from the surrounding area and really add to the look of the park. There is an observation tower that marks the highest elevation in AL, it as well as the cabins, chalets, and lodge were built in the 30's by the CCC. It's not worth the trip into the tower (if it's unlocked) because it's dirty and smelly and when you get to the top, the windows are too dirty for a clear view, however, the top pane was lowered so you can take a picture. Graffiti all over the tower from the inside. I recommend you take your pictures from the outside. Everything in the park is beautiful from the outside (despite the small amount of trash here & there). There were two sweet ladies in the office/store who told us how to find some waterfalls outside the park with good directions.
Part 2: The facilities. On 3 of our four prior visits we camped, tent-style. The restrooms and shower facilities were never very clean, so we just tried to limit our use of them, no big deal. The 4th time we stayed at the motel the first night, then camped the other two. Was kind of like an outdated Super 8, but was clean and satisfactory. This trip we only had two nights, so we chose the motel. You have to check in at the store (for camping, hotel or cabins) we had to wait a bit because this is also where they book the reservations, check in guests and run the store, which has a good selection of items, but very pricey. If you choose the motel, make sure they pull out a map of it and show you where your room is because it's a maze, as it's built on the side of a hill and has multiple levels, not stories. They have them, but didn't bother to show us until we went back after searching for it to ask. It was a corner room and the door was hidden behind a tree. When we finally found it and walked in, the smoke alarm was hanging from the ceiling. My husband put it back up. The lavatory faucet was missing a screen, so water sprayed all over the counter if you turned it on too fast. We didn't bother even callng about it. The hotel office itself has closed, but there is a microwave in there for guests, thank God! We knew from prior experience that the restaurant was not good so the first night we drove 45 minutes each way to Anniston and ate at O'Charley's. We told the waitress there where we were staying and she fixed us up what she called a "care package" with our left overs, potato soup and extra yeast rolls, bless her! That's what we ate for lunch the next day. Didn't want to drive back down the mountain the second night so decided to give it a third try. Mistake. All we wanted was to order a simple burger and fried fish sandwich for take out. Can't do it from your room, all you get is dead air. If you call the park# you get a recording that tells you to dial 142, but it wouldn't connect. So you have to walk over and wait because the "hostess?" has other duties and was upstairs at the time. Finally got the order placed, then waited another 15 minutes, went back in and was told that the order was placed on hold b/c they didn't know whether we wanted the fish fried or grilled?! But didn't ask when order was placed. Fifteen minutes later we finally get our food and there are no napkins or tartar sauce for the fish sand, which the menu states comes on it. After another 5 minutes in the restaurant, we got the napkins and tartar sauce. Apparently, they cooked his hamburger the first time and left it while they waited to find out how to cook the fish because it was not only overcooked, but cold. The fish tasted as though it was cooked in oil that needed to be changed. We choked down about half of it to get us through. No manager there at all. Sorry so long. Please don't stay away from this beautiful park, just bring your own food. The guests next to us who lived 30 minutes away brought their own food and just drove to the picnic pavilion to cook, then brought it back to their room to eat. Good news is that you can enjoy the view from either the pool or the outside deck of the restaurant and never have to eat there! read more
