It's a totally creepy, middle of nowhere brewery. It has camp crystal lake vibes. It's a big property with gravel parking and multiple cabins. One cabin has the brewery, one has the actual bar, and there's another where the owner lives? We were driving by and saw a brewery sign. We figured we would stop by, especially since we didn't realize there was a brewery here. When we entered the "bar cabin," we were greeted by the bartender. I ordered a small pour of their sour drink. I almost paid cash, but I realized they did have internet out here for their POS terminal. There's a large pinboard map where all the visitors have come from. That was pretty cool to see. The bartender was friendly, and the building was clean. We were one and done as we were passing through. However, this place gives off total scary movie-type vibes (come check it out it for yourself if you dont believe me). It's not rundown by any means. Came during an overcast Saturday afternoon and there weren't many other folks here, a family of four enjoying some takeout they had brought (while their kids ran around) and a couple eating cheese (they had bought directly from the brewery). This location isn't super wellmarked, so trust your GPS! We drank our beers - me a Surfcasting and my partner a Sap Haus - behind the rustic farmhouse near the big trout pond. When we came there was a lot of construction going on outside, so mounds of dirt and pallets everywhere. We took a walk around their orchard and farm (where some of the fruit they use in their beers is grown), and were bummed to see so much trash - both dog poop bags and disposed of cans - all over the place. We also walked the trails in their backwoods which was, I don't know, just a walk through some buggy woods really. I think this spot is probably really special in the height of summer when there are events or live music (when it isn't under construction, and their back fields and trails are clean), but I probably wouldn't come out of my way to come back. HOWEVER, I did get to try Surfcasting (which I honestly never would have otherwise), and it's become an immediate favorite. I purchased a six pack there before we left, and I've already purchased it again multiple times from retailers in Portland. It's a gently salted grisette with lime. Hello new summer drink! My partner didn't love his Sap Haus (a smoked lager); we've just had more interesting smoked lagers at other local breweries. But... give me all the Surfcasting!!! read more

I was going to go 4 stars because they only have porta-potties, but I'll go 5. (Something about being a farmhouse brewery and the number of water sources they are allowed to have). This is a very quirky and interesting establishment. I am not sure how anyone would find this place if they were not actively looking for it. Once you see the small sign, you enter a driveway that heads towards a group of various buildings that do nothing but encourage the feeling that you are in the wrong place. Nevertheless we persevered. After entering a small, shed-like building we were greeted by a friendly lady who welcomed us warmly and explained the current beers on tap. The Oxbow Brewing Company spot in Newcastle is such a gem! Beer lovers and good time havers alike will love this hidden spot, nestled in the woods. They've got SUCH a lovely staff (shout-out to the gal who told my friends and me that we all looked adorable and color coordinated). We met some folks who were traveling through and played corn hole, all while enjoying some amazingly delicious brews. You can even bring the kiddos here! Be wary of the bathrooms (rustic + alcohol + porter potties = rough). If you're not used to port-o-potties it can be a shock. Otherwise, GREAT spot and they even have some animals to pet! A navy friend introduced me to the Newcastle area years ago and in 2017 we were up in the area and my beer connoisseur daughter found Oxbow and we took a drive up from Boothbay. Great backwoods brewery with friendly people and love the ambiance. Was in the area again a week ago for a quick brain retreat and was the only person in the place (it was a Thursday evening in early December). The employees were awesome friendly and we chatted for a couple of hours while the resident cat and a visiting dog made me feel at home. I love the area and the retreat of Oxbow in the middle of the woods and this is a must visit! read more

I LOVE their beer. Ton of amazing sours. Their farmhouse ale is a classic. I even like their pilsner, which is usually something I avoid. GET THE SURFCASTING!! It's somewhere between a farmhouse and a gose in an amazing way. If you're in the mood for a stout in the summer the one they have in a bottle for you. I would honestly sit in a concrete bunker drinking this beer by flashlight. It's that good. That said, the location is amazing! Rustic (because it's an old farm) but set in the woods a bit with a small pond. We only used the outdoor space cause the weather was so nice, but they had a pretty spacious indoors with good light. I love this place. The atmosphere is awesome. There is a lot of space outside to walk around, play lawn games, or just sit and drink beers. Inside it is cozy and can get packed if the weather is not good, but it is still a perfect spot to spend an afternoon. The beer is great and continues to develop each year they continue to brew. The bottle aged beers are also worth a try and can be purchased here. I happened upon a sour bottle tasting one time I stopped off this summer and it was spectacular. It was so much fun to try all of the sour bottle beers and we ended up buying our favorites to bring home. This place is totally worth the visit! read more

The beer is always a 5 star, however this is a small space. On a nice day you can walk around the property, play corn hole and enjoy the sun. However, I most recently visited on a cold rainy day and it was BUSY. We stayed for 1 and left because of it. No formal bathrooms (portable toilets only) which is no fun in winter. Really cool spot! We were go glad we took the trip here. It's a little off the beaten path, but I think that is part of the charm. I'm a huge fan of farmhouse beers so I loved their selection. Their tasting room is on the small side, but fun to explore. They have some fun games inside and corn hole outside. The only downside is they don't have a running water bathroom (just a port-a-potty). The atmosphere here is relaxed and very inviting. A legit brewery in the middle of the woods. Ballsy move, since all the cool kids are opening their breweries in Portland (OBC now has a Portland location, which makes business sense). But Oxbow is doing it right, with a teeny-tiny taproom that smells about what I want my life to smell like--beer and wood. Aside from the adventurous beer offering, the location and vibe of this place is unlike any other I've been to. The brewhouse is located in an old barn next to a quaint AF pond that you can hike around beer-in-hand. There are chickens walking around, a cat sleeping on the bannister as you enter the front door. A great little brewery and taproom. The location is somewhat remote, but since I went to a wedding that was only 15 minutes away it wasn't a long detour for me. The taproom is nice and rustic, in a woodsy setting, with seating for perhaps 15 inside and a further 10-20 outside.They had four draft beers available during my visit, for either full pour, as part of a sample flight or for takeaway. There were also two bottled beers available (a bit on the pricey side, I might add). The beers were all quite good. The staff was friendly and quick to serve, though it wasn't very busy on my visit. They have simple food options, like cheese. Outside they've got two cornhold courts set up. Definitely worth a visit if you're within a reasonable distance, but I probably wouldn't travel more than an hour to come here unless they had specific beers available that interested me. read more

I've been to over 130 breweries, so trust me when I say that this is a must-visit brewery. Located in the woods in Maine tucked away smack-dab in a mostly residential area with a rural character, you can swear that when your GPS says you're 3 minutes away that the GPS can't possibly be right, but it is, and it's glorious. The drive here itself is nice and I highly recommend taking the minor detour here if you're travelling from Portland to Acadia. You also get the added bonus of a more scenic route as opposed to taking I-95 most of the way. The taproom space, inside and out, is rustic and gorgeous. Sampler pours are priced pretty well and it is very quiet outside with tons of space... a wondrous change of pace for me. There's even some things to explore, including a pond, some weird artsy wooden cube thing, numerous cornhole setups... I even ran into some turkeys. This is hands down the most secluded and unique brewery I've been to. Another huge positive is that they have small packages of local artisanal cheeses and crackers, among other light foodstuffs. I had a delicious aged cheddar and some awesome moldy beast of a cheese with the lightly-flavored crackers being a fitting accompaniment. The only thing I'd change is the bottle prices, which I believe to be very high... 500mL bottles run from $12 to $20. I was hoping to drink more Oxbow while in Acadia, but only wound up bringing back two bottles. one for home and one for there. To their credit, Synthesis was fantastic though! I can't wait to get back here someday. read more
