House sauces that come with steak
Mariah K.

Wow.. I can't explain how amazing this dinner was. The restaurant itself is beautiful inside, service was 10/10 but the star of the show was the meal. We ordered a Cesar salad to start, with the in house made focaccia and sourdough with salted butter. For entrees we had the brussel sprouts, puree potatoes, the rib eye and filet magnon. I'll be thinking about this meal for a long time; the steaks were cooked to perfection mixed with a perfect array of house made sauces (many different choices). The potato puree was actually insane, so creamy and flavorful. Cannot recommend Ox + Anchor enough! Such an incredible and delicious meal.

Went here with my gf about a month ago for our anniversary and loved it. Steaks were cooked to our preferences and the sauces provided were excellent. I loved that they were included for free because at most steakhouses I've been to or restaurants similar to this one, I've had to pay for each sauce. The tater tots and mashed potatoes here were the real stars in my opinion. The tater tots here aren't like your regular tater tots texture, it had a more breadcrumby kind of exterior but it's great to me, nice and soft and cheesy inside

Ox + Anchor feels like the kind of place San Luis Obispo has been patiently waiting for. You walk in and immediately sense that this room knows what it is doing. Contemporary and polished without being stiff, softly lit but never dim, it strikes that rare balance where you feel dressed up enough to care and relaxed enough to enjoy yourself. One of the first things you notice is the massive glass wall separating the dining room from the kitchen. It is not a gimmick. It is a quiet flex. Chefs move with calm focus, plates come together with intention, and you get the comforting feeling that everything behind the scenes is exactly where it should be. Watching dinner come to life adds a subtle excitement, like seeing the orchestra before the curtain rises. The space itself is clean, modern, and welcoming. It feels appropriate for everything from a first date to a business dinner to a celebration where someone definitely dressed nicer than they claimed they would. Locals, hotel guests, and travelers all seem to fit seamlessly into the room. That alone says a lot. Now the food. The salmon deserves a moment of silence. Deep sea Pacific Northwest king salmon with that beautiful marbling that only cold water fish can deliver. It was tender, rich, and somehow both indulgent and light at the same time. Each bite melted effortlessly, the kind of salmon that makes you pause mid chew and reconsider every other salmon you have ever eaten. Simple preparation, exceptional quality, unforgettable result. The lamb arrived sliced like a New York strip, boneless and beautifully presented. What made it especially fun were the sauces. A red wine sauce, a chimichurri, a marinade style sauce, and their signature Ox sauce which is their take on barbecue. This is not the loud, sharp kind that overwhelms everything. It is smooth, balanced, and genuinely complimentary. Choosing a favorite felt like picking a favorite child, but that Ox sauce made a very persuasive argument. Drinks were handled with the same care. The Old Fashioned was smooth and perfectly integrated, the kind that tastes like the bartender understands time as an ingredient. Ice, spirit, and dilution working together instead of fighting each other. The martini was equally well executed, clean and rounded with no harsh edges. From Four Roses single batch to thoughtful vodka selections, the bar program clearly takes pride in doing things properly. Sides were far from afterthoughts. The potato puree was light and airy, almost cloudlike, generous enough to make you question your portion expectations in the best way. The polenta arrived like a small cake, with a gentle crust and a soft interior that held together beautifully. Flavorful without being heavy, it walked that perfect line between comforting and refined. The salad brought freshness and balance. Endive and beets played nicely together, bright and clean, with goat cheese and candied walnuts adding just enough contrast. Speaking of goat cheese, the goat cheese croquettes were a highlight. Warm and creamy inside a crisp panko shell, finished with honey and rosemary notes that made each bite feel intentional and satisfying. Dessert sealed the evening with confidence. A deconstructed strawberry shortcake featured light sponge style cake resting on fresh diced strawberries. It felt playful and familiar without being predictable. The chocolate dessert was equally memorable. A dark chocolate tart base topped with a scoop of rich mousse and paired with ice cream that brought everything together. Decadent without being overwhelming, the kind of dessert that makes conversation pause for a moment. Then there is Brian. Every great restaurant has that one person who quietly elevates the entire experience, and at Ox + Anchor, Brian is that person. He reads tables like a seasoned novelist reads a room. Our interaction was warm, engaging, and perfectly paced, while the couple next to us enjoyed a more hushed and romantic rhythm. That level of awareness is rare and deeply appreciated. Brian was knowledgeable, confident, funny, and genuinely invested in making the night special. Timing was impeccable, plates arrived gracefully, and small details never slipped. One especially thoughtful touch was the warm steamed towels infused with almond oil. Not just practical, but refreshing and unexpected, leaving your hands clean and lightly scented after enjoying more hands on dishes. Ox + Anchor feels smooth, organized, and joyful. It is the kind of place where you can dress up a little, feel important without feeling stiff, and trust that every detail is being handled with care. San Luis Obispo benefits from having a restaurant like this. It feels worthy of attention, worthy of celebration, and worthy of repeat visits. We are already talking about coming back. That usually tells you everything you need to know.

Have you ever seen the show "The Bear?" That's what I think about when I come to Ox+Anchor. The food is so well made and the staff is so attentive; it is hard not to love this place. I've had dinner here twice and both times were amazing. I started off with a salad, which was simple but so flavorful. The accompanying bread was toasted nicely and delicious. We then shared the bone marrow tots, which wasn't what I expected but was very good. The inside is almost like a mashed potato texture; but flavorful and not too heavy For my main dish, I got the steak with a side of Mac n cheese. The steak melted in my mouth and was one of the best I've had. The dessert was a mini cheese cake and wow! So good! I could eat that everyday. I can't wait to come back here again for dinner! Definitely worth the visit if you're in SLO!

Potatoes... a must - amazing

Absolutely loved my experience at Ox + Anchor! The restaurant itself is gorgeous and has a cute bar. The service staff was incredibly nice and helpful, they have exceptional service. The overall vibe is so cute and upscale, definitely the perfect steakhouse vibe that slo needed. The food comes out so fresh and hot, loved my fillet and the potatoes were absolutely to die for. I'd come back here in a second! Highly recommend.

Such a great find. We didn't have a reservation but luckily there was some corner space in the bar area for our group. We got Slo n easy martinis and were so good. A nice twist on a classic martini. We ordered bone marrow tots, beet salad, and oysters as apps. Then the burger, chicken, and hanger steak for mains, and Brussels sprouts for a side. The tots were decadent and flavorful and still had a nice crisp. The Brussels sprouts had a great balance with the pickled onions and bacon for flavor. Oysters were fresh and also just looked so good when served. Steak and the sauces were so fresh and loved the chimichurri. The chicken was so so juicy and burger was definitely bigger than expected and perfect. I'd come back again and highly recommend.

Celebrated my 65th birthday and decided to try out Ox Anchor. We had a great dining experience. Our server, Marcus, was very friendly and attentive. He was very welcoming and shared some of his favorites on the menu. We started with the grilled artichokes, yellowfin tuna tartare and 1/2 dozen local Morro Bay raw oysters. Everything was great. The freshly baked sour dough bread and focaccia along with the salted butter was delicious. Two of us had the 12 oz ribeye and the other two had Snake River Farms Wagyu flat iron. The ribeye was cooked to perfection but the SPF Wagyu melted into your mouth. We shared grilled asparagus and the mash potatoes. Since it was my birthday, I received a complimentary strawberry shortcake dessert. It was yummy. My family all agree that we will be returning to Ox Anchor in the future.

Ox + Anchor - My family & I had made an impromptu trip to SLO & the last evening we were there we decided to find a steakhouse near our hotel. I made reservations for 745 & we checked in a little bit before our reservation time to see if they had anything available sooner. The manager & the hostess both were so helpful & got us a table after a few minutes. We started with the dumplings & I ordered the SLO n Easy. The dumplings were full of flavor & they were the perfect appetizer. They also brought out complimentary bread & butter with sea salt. My husband ordered a Ribeye & I ordered the Filet Mignon. Both came out at the perfect temp & the creamed spinach was a great shareable size. Our server, Tory was extremely hospitable & sweet. I ordered another drink & they were both so good. We ordered the Baked Alaska & it was presented at our table. Such a unique combination of cake/ice cream. The interior of the restaurant is gorgeous & we sat near the window where my daughter was able to see the food being prepped & she had a good time watching & waving at everyone! The service was amazing from the very beginning. Everyone we came in contact with were super friendly & accommodating. If you are in the area & you are looking for quality service & amazing top notch food, this is the spot!

Birthday dessert

Love coming here for anniversaries, birthdays, or just a special night out. The staff is exceptional, they extremely thoughtful. They open doors, greet you warmly, and thank you as you leave, making every visit feel personal. The ambiance is very inviting and elegant. Chef Ryan is incredibly friendly, and the wine selection is outstanding. Without a doubt, one of the best dining experiences on the Central Coast, and all of California!

Can you bring your own wine and what is the corkage and is there a night when corkage is waived?

Is the restaurant kid friendly?

Yes it is.

I know it's an upscale restaurant, would nice jeans be acceptable if paired with a nice top and shoes?

That's what I wore the last time I was there, and most were dressed the same. It's upscale, but also a fun place to spend an evening and a meal.

Do they allow you to bring your own bottle of wine? If so, what's the corkage fee?

HI Steven, You are welcome to bring your own wine-the corkage is $25.… Read more

First time here after a 3.5 hr drive to SLO. Service - 3.5 stars. So I gave this mainly because my wife (not me) seemed to not vibe with our waitress. In fact, I can tell my wife felt our waitress was being rude when she was asking questions about the menu. There was definitely tension with my wife in that she had to talk about the rudeness of our waitress. As for myself, I didn't take the waitress nodding to my wife's question as being rude but whatever. Thing my wife did notice after we gave our order was that our waitress didn't bring the complimentary bread and butter and we had clearly seen two tables in front of us get that. In fact, my wife had to go to the front desk to ask if free bread was given. For that, 3.5 stars So I had the lunch special - Wild Pacific rockfish with cilantro lime rice and pineapple cole saw. The rice- 3 stars. Nothing special , hard to differentiate it with regular rice since flavor was subtle and I couldn't taste any lime to it. Pineapple Cole slaw side- 5 stars. Very light and refreshing . Had a bit of Dijon taste to it with small pineapple pieces. Both me and my wife enjoyed it (when I had her try it) The rockfish -3 stars felt like it was a bit dry. Had to ask for tartar sauce just to give some zing as well as salt and pepper My wife had the salmon, side of clam chowder and cilantro rice. I tried the salmon and was pretty good taste and seemed more fresh than store bought. Overall, it was a decent experience for a seafood place but not a wow factor. Would I come back again? I think it was good to try it out but there are too many other seafood places to try in the SLO/ Pismo beach area

It's one of those things where you don't know what you want but every menu all looks the same. We finally tried it out for dinner after a weekend in the wine country. The restaurant is right in the heart of downtown SLO next to the park and riverwalk. We had an early reservation at 6 on a Saturday and let me say the place was packed. The outside patio was completely full which was nice to see. Checking in was easy with the hostess. All was sweet and made it fast and simply and we were seated right away without having to wait for the whole party to arrive. Menu wise, a bit of everything but they specialized in paella's. And that was had. Our waitress Kaitlin was the sweetest. Right from the start, she was a major doll. Made sure we were taken care of throughout the whole dining experience. Started off with a bottle of red for the table. A good selections from their menu. Then a few small shared plates for the table. An order of the bacon wrapped dates, Brussels sprouts, Peruvian shrimp ceviche and the gambas al ajillo. First off the dates, very tasty with salty and sweet. A good bite size with about 6 piece. Then the ceviche, nice chunks of shrimp with all the trimming. Cucumber, red onions, tomatoes , avocado, cilantro and chips. Then you have the sprouts which is pretty self explanatory. Roasted to a nice crisp with golden raisins and almonds. Pretty decent and delicious. Lastly the gambas, sautéed shrimp in paprika garlic and white wine sauce with a Parmesan slice of sourdough bread. Everything was delicious and a good start to an amazing meal. I do recommend the starters. For our entree, even though we started off with loads of the shared plates. The mains all looked amazing. Clearly we had to have the paella which they're known for. There were couple options in them but we opted for the mix which was a combination of the seafood and meat paella. Let me say it was massive and clearly more than enough for four of us. The nice big chunks of seafood and meat which they did not skimp on. The flavors and the whole combination of everything together, chefs kiss. It was pretty massive as well. Of course we couldn't just stop there, we also had the lamb chops with frites. Cooked perfectly and very tasty. The hanger steak with chimichurri sauce accompanied by roasted potatoes and sautéed broccolini. That dish was excellent and steak was cooked perfectly. Lastly, I believe it was one of their specials the sea bass. A nice thick and flaky piece of fish on top of a red sauce of tomatoes, olives. The flavor was excellent and worth it. The food was excellent and it was a surprise when there were leftovers. We may have over done it with the extra entrees after seeing the massive platter of paella. But every dish was excellent and worth it. The service was great with everyone involved. Friendly staff and excellent customer service. The food and wine were great. The whole dining experience was top notch and greatly enjoyed. We will definitely be back. At least we know about the paella now...lol... A must and highly recommend. We got 10 start off with. I personally got a paella as it has been forever since I had it. *brussel sprouts- 4.5/5- one of the better versions of brussel sprouts I have had in a while, they were beautifully roasted, they retained their character but at the same time were delicious instead of tasting too healthy. *fingerling potatoes-4.5/5- potatoes tend to be tasty any which way they are cooked. The standout in this version was the finger licking sauce it was doused in. *paella- 4.5/5- I got the chicken paella. It came with a soft jammy egg. The dish had 75% protein and about 25% rice. The rice at the bottom was nicely crisped up. The chicken was in large chunks but surprisingly non funky and wonderfully flavored. I stole some of the sauce from the tacos to amp up this dish further. 4.5 for the food, rounding up for the good vibes and great ambiance!

What a find!! Where to begin... I was pleasantly surprised…read moreto have come across Coya Peruvian Restaurant in a lovely street of SLO. I was even more impressed when I got to try their food and realized that they do very little to no compromising with the authenticity of their flavors. Because... what's the point of eating Peruvian if is going to taste like California cuisine? The Highlights: Ceviche Mixto: the leche de tigre was bursting with lime, perfectly cured seafood, undeniable freshness and the right amount of kick! Papas a la Huancaina: the papas were rich in that creamy velvety sauce, though it could have used a bit more of ají amarillo. Lomo Saltado: the fillet was smokey and tender with flawlessly executed wok-sear and home made fries (not frozen)! Grilled Pulpo: the octopus was tender, beautifully charred, and packed with savory flavor. Pisco Sour: because you CANNOT visit a Peruvian restaurant without trying a pisco sour! The pisco sour was properly frothed, balanced, strong, and highly refreshing. And the best for last.... **Conchitas a la parmesana** I did a happy dance in my chair as I took the first bite...The broiled scallops fused in the creamy richness of the Parmesan gratin. Muuua! Delish!!! The Service: It was courteous, prompt and the staff offered excellent suggestions. The ambiance: What a beautiful place! The atmosphere is casual, inviting and rich with culture. There are beautiful traditional displays of Peruvian textiles and striking copper craftsmanship lining the space. The wall art beautifully honors Peru's agricultural heritage creating a warm and inviting environment to stage the meal. The music was great! Latin American Spanish rock/pop. ...and please do not leave without some alfajores! One of my favorite Peruvian sweets
