If you want fantastic high quality food, unique side dishes and incredible service while in San Luis Obispo, this is the place. Logan our server was fantastic. Great sense of humor, and great conversation along with superior recommendations. WARNING: The side dishes are massive. Not a bad thing but if you are two people, stick to one side dish and that is the whipped potatoes. It is the signature side dish and after one bit you will know why. We started off with a beet salad that was exquisitely presented. Fresh, crisp and almost a palate cleanser, this is a great way to start your meal. Because we are no longer big eaters, we saw the Wagyu flat iron steak on the menu and if you've never had a flat iron steak, this is definitely the go to. Skip the other cuts and try the flat iron. Thank me later. We had not mentioned how we wanted the flat iron cooked, and I realized as it was coming out that it's done. This may not have been to my liking because flat iron should be cooked a perfect medium rare. This was cooked perfectly and seasoned with the perfect amount of salt finish. You get four sauces to try that are included with your steak but I think sauces distracts from the beef flavor and when paying for this quality of flat iron steak, I want that pure beef flavor in every bite. We had the whipped potatoes which are not the typical whipped potatoes. Trust me. We also had the honey glazed whole fresh carrots that were amazing. Wow wow wow. We had another restaurant reserved and I am so glad we changed our minds and came to ox + anchor. This restaurant is doing everything right. EVERYTHING. The ambiance, service, food- all 5 stars, no notes. The server was so helpful with his suggestions, most popular items, and notes on even where to place the knife on the plate so it wouldn't fall. To start, we got a margarita and a glass of Sauvignon blanc. Now, my husband did think the margarita was a bit too strong but does anyone ever complain about that? I thought it tasted great. Now onto the bread...oh my gosh THE BREAD. What a silly minor thing to compliment a restaurant on- free bread- but it was divine! I make my own bread at home and would love to discover the magic behind both the sourdough and the focaccia- amazing. And the flaky salt on the butter- chefs kiss. The beet and endive salad was a glorious work of art and tasted delicious- fat, acid, salt (no heat)- all working perfectly together. The server sold my husband on the burger and my husband did say it was one of the top he's had. The filet was very good with the sauces. The server brought all four- I loved the chimichurri and the bordelaise the best but would take any of them any day. The mushroom risotto was absolutely incredible and delicious. Getting a reservation at a popular dinner time might require some planning. I highly suggest you plan a couple weeks ahead if you want something that is in the 6 or 7 o'clock hour. Atmosphere is warm and inviting, although it does get loud when the place fills up. We had a ribeye, and it was the nicest piece of beef we've had in a restaurant in a while. They know how to cook it rare. Tried the chimichurri sauce, really good. Crab cake was delish. Good Brussels. Wow, I just don't know where to start with how amazing this place is! It was my birthday, and we called for a reservation last minute. When we got there, they couldn't find it, but no worries--the manager brought us to an amazing table by the window. Our waiter, Marcus, was incredible! I didn't say anything, but I've been in the industry off and on for 30 years, and he was one of the best servers I've ever had. I trained servers for 5 years, and he just knocked it out of the park! The hostess and the bussers were also so attentive. The food was heavenly! We got the grilled artichoke, the apple and endive salad, the Yukon gold potatoes, and two filets (Rare and Medium Rare). I worked for a steakhouse, and wow! Everything was cooked perfectly. My only note is just a little less salt, but I also just have a lower tolerance than most people, so I don't think it's their fault--it's my palate. The decor and the vibe were also just right on the money. The music wasn't super loud, so you could hear the person across from you, which was refreshing. This was the third place in SLO we ate at on our trip, and it was the best place to celebrate my 46th birthday! We will definitely be back in SLO and at Ox + Anchor. read more

We came here to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday, and unfortunately the experience was incredibly disappointing. To start on a positive note, we were seated immediately, and the initial service was great. Someone came over right away to explain the menu, bring us water, and take our drink order. After that, things quickly went downhill. It took 35 minutes to receive our drinks. The bartender personally brought them over, apologized for the delay, and explained he had been refilling the butane tank for my boyfriend's Old Fashioned. A few minutes later, he returned with my Lemon Drop and even commented that he didn't know why it had taken so long because it had already been ready. He then came back with three complimentary shots--one for himself, one for my boyfriend, and one for me--to celebrate the birthday. He specifically told us he had taken care of our drinks because of the long wait. We thought that was a thoughtful gesture and appreciated him acknowledging the delay. Our appetizers arrived and were good, but when our entrees came out, everything was extremely salty. Our server offered to remake everything, but by that point we had already been there for nearly two hours, so we declined because we didn't want to restart the meal and wait even longer. When dessert came, we immediately asked for the check because we had already been there for almost three hours. Our server told us he had "taken care of the sides," but when the bill arrived, the birthday dessert had simply been comped, there was a random discount that only covered one side, and the drinks we had been told were taken care of were still on the bill. When we mentioned what the bartender had told us, our server said he needed to speak with a manager. He eventually came back and said there was nothing they could do because the bartender had already left. Instead, he brought us two warm towels and suggested that maybe the complimentary shots were the compensation. The problem is that we never ordered those shots. We also didn't necessarily want to drink with the bartender. When I asked what the shots were, his response was, "They're good and free--that's all you need to know." I prefer to know what I'm being served before I drink it, especially when it's alcohol. At the end of the day, this isn't about paying for the drinks. It's about communication and follow-through. If you're going to tell guests you've taken care of something, that should be reflected on the bill. Between the long wait times, overly salty food, mixed messages from the staff, and the lack of resolution, it was a disappointing way to celebrate a birthday. read more

Celebrated our anniversary last night at this yummy restaurant. Angel was our server and he was pretty spot on. At the end we could tell he was getting a tad busy but overall he was on top of it. We started with the bone marrow tator tots. They were DELICIOUS and we also had a couple oysters. They were tiny but packed a punch. We both enjoyed mocktails which we were glad were recommended to us. The tomato salad had mozzarella, cucumbers, watermelon and tomatoes. It was juicy and all went well together. We both also loved the horseradish creme fraiche that helped cut through some of the heaviness of this dish. Note though that there is an odd amount of tots per dish so my gf and I had to fight over the last one. - 10oz american wagyu flat iron (5/5): we ordered this medium rare and it was perfectly cooked. The steak was juicy but not overly fatty since it was consistently marbled. It was seasoned well but we loved trying all the different complimentary sauces with it - especially the red wine bordelaise sauce. So glad we tried this! - Ox burger with aged cheddar (5/5): Super fresh tasting and not oily at all. Juicy and super aromatic to the bite. Brioche bun was slightly sweet and made the dish well balanced. We also loved the tomato relish that was included as it was super unique and delicious. It was a bit odd having the lettuce, tomato, pickle, and pickled onion on the side but we had it like a side salad and it worked out ok. The fries included were yummy and definitely get the lemon aioli to add to some bites! - Meyer Lemon Cheesecake (5/5): Not heavy or overly sweet at all which we really appreciated since we were stuffed at this point. The appetizers and salads were excellent. As the room filled up it got noisier and noisier and the service slowed down. When our entrees and sides were delivered, everything was lovely and the sides were shared around the table. When we began eating, several of us noticed that the steak looked right - cooked to specification on the inside and gorgeously seared on the outside - BUT they were cool. Nothing about them was warm. I believe they were allowed to rest for too long after being cooked. I ate some of my filet but it was nothing special. One in our party quietly mentioned this to the waitstaff but I do not know what, if any, compensation was given. This is not the 1st time I've been here. But its the bad you write about and remember. The bar was already preset by the great service we have had previously. I can get good food alot of places but service is getting hard to come by. The previous trips always had great service, a comped dessert for a special occasion. Drinks and water always full. I believe I tipped 35% it was that good. Well this time we go to celebrate by wife's birthday and her favorite comfort food is a good burger so we thought we would go try the best. And it was. The burgers where absolutely amazing 10/10. That's where it stopped. They forgot our bread. Couldn't get a drink refilled. Its almost like he was mad I didn't order alcohol, my wife did but I don't drink so diet coke for me. After ordering burgers they totally lost all interest in us. Watching everyone around us get excellent service and just being ignored. Waiting and waiting. Our entrees came out within 15 min of ordering and we where there for almost 2 hours. It took forever for my wife to get her birthday dessert. They sang for other tables but not for ours. They boxed up other tables food and just set boxes on the table for us... like completely missed the mark on every chance. Didn't even comp the birthday dessert like they had when where went there before. Not a big deal but we just felt that if we ordered steaks the night would have been completely different. Ox + Anchor - My family & I had made an impromptu trip to SLO & the last evening we were there we decided to find a steakhouse near our hotel. I made reservations for 745 & we checked in a little bit before our reservation time to see if they had anything available sooner. The manager & the hostess both were so helpful & got us a table after a few minutes. We started with the dumplings & I ordered the SLO n Easy. The dumplings were full of flavor & they were the perfect appetizer. They also brought out complimentary bread & butter with sea salt. My husband ordered a Ribeye & I ordered the Filet Mignon. Both came out at the perfect temp & the creamed spinach was a great shareable size. Our server, Tory was extremely hospitable & sweet. I ordered another drink & they were both so good. We ordered the Baked Alaska & it was presented at our table. Such a unique combination of cake/ice cream. The interior of the restaurant is gorgeous & we sat near the window where my daughter was able to see the food being prepped & she had a good time watching & waving at everyone! The service was amazing from the very beginning. Everyone we came in contact with were super friendly & accommodating. Very pricey but well worth it. Excellent service. Tasty alcoholic drinks. Absolutely fabulous steaks. Yukon Gold Potato Purée and the loaded baked potato are standouts. Side dishes and enhancers are separate purchases. Very nice ambiance. Especially festive to treat yourself during the holidays. read more

Went for a special occasion. Shout out to the staff! Brian was an awesome server and took such good care of us. But all the staff were so great from the bartender to the busser. Highly recommend the old fashioned--so good. And the food! Me and my date both had a different cut of steak and both agreed they were possibly the best steak we've ever had.
