We stopped in hoping to have breakfast, but we missed the deadline by 7 minutes, which is good for me since I'm not a big breakfast person. Hubby was a little bummed though. Our waitress was no nonsense, just a "yep" when we mentioned missing breakfast. She was a great waitress. Took our order right away and made sure we had everything we needed. We ordered the fried mushrooms, smothered burrito, and BLT with fries. The mushrooms came out super hot, and had a good breading on them. The ranch was really good. The smothered burrito was good. It was full of taco meat and the green chili was descent. They also gave you salsa and sour cream which was nice. The BLT was good. The bacon wasn't super crispy, but tasted really good. I didn't care for the fries. They weren't bad but had that breading like texture on them. I'm not a fan, but that's just a personal preference. Pretty bad experience overall unfortunately. Took an hour to get our 2 meals. It's a hard knock life for vegetarians in most of this country but this was an extra sad grilled cheese. Made with 2 slices of processed cheese even though I ordered the one off the adult menu (not kids menu). I should have asked if they had real cheese I guess, my bad. The tomato I added was good thankfully but between the fake cheese, lack of it (see photo), and the canola oil / margarine on the bread, it was not a tasty bite of food. Hmmm. I wasn't quite sure where to rate Outpost Cafe. 2 or 3 stars. As another Yelper said "Get's the job done." With limited options in Lusk, Wyoming, it's a popular place. Very typical American diner type menu. And the food is what you expect. Edible but nothing that will blow you away. The one thing that was quite delicious and out of the box for a place like this was their "Smashers". Like a jalapeno popper but with a tater tot for the breading, then smashed and deep fried. If you're on a road trip like we were and you don't have time for a long stop - Outpost Cafe probably isn't the place to stop. I think our lunch stop added more than an hour to our day. read more

Wow.wow.wow. Okay, so most of the restaurants in town were closed today, leaving us with Outpost and Subway. We have Subway anywhere so we decided Outpost gets it a go. It's by a truck stop (Outpost truck stop) and it's a bit run down, but don't let that fool you! The food was homemade and just what we wanted. The wait time was longer than most places we've been because there's only one waitress taking orders and cleaning tables. Thankfully the other staff members came out of the kitchen and gave her a hand today when rush hour started, just after we were seated. We ordered the BLT, chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and corn dogs with chips for kiddo. OH MY! The breading on the corn dogs tasted made from scratch. The chicken fried steak was absolutely amazing as were the homemade mashed taters. My BLT had the best bacon I've ever tasted on it, cooked just the way I like. Let me sum up our experience with this. Outpost has the cheapest prices we've encountered on our trip so far, YET they have the best food we've gotten. Needless to say, we left our overworked waitress a hefty tip for her amazing service. Despite her hustle and bustle she still managed to have a smile and continue to buzz around the dining room like she'd done this a million times. P.s. They are hiring more staff to accommodate the influx of traffic and to be open longer hours! As long as they serve the quality of food they served us today, they will be set for a long time. Went in with low expectations and came away very pleased with lunch. My wife and I were in town to charge our car and walked up 4 blocks to the Outpost. The place was quite busy when we arrived but there were still several free tables that we could pick from. The single server working the dining room was hustling and doing an amazing job keeping up with everything. She came by shortly after we sat down with waters and menus. The menu had your typical lunch selections including several varieties of hamburgers. My wife and I ordered the same thing the cheeseburger with fries. Our food came out like just 5 minutes later looking and tasting amazing. The burger meat was very fresh as were the toppings of lettuce, tomato and onion. The fries were the skinny type well fried and slightly crispy. The only negative thing I can say were the flies. At one point I counted eight hanging out by our table. One of the very few restaurants open on a Sunday for miles and miles. We had to drive about an hour and 15 minutes from Hot Springs, which is where we were staying just to find lunch. I'll be honest, it doesn't look like much other than a small town typical cafe. As it is the only restaurant in town open on a Sunday it was pretty busy. There was only two tables left and they filled up quickly. The staff are friendly enough and service is fast and easy! The food presentation may not look that appetizing or appeasing, but it's actually pretty good! I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised. We were not expecting much when we found a Tesla super charger in Lusk Wyoming but a quick yelp search brought us to Outpost cafe a few blocks away. The cafe was very unassuming and plain. We were greeted by very nice and smiling crew and were seated promptly. I ordered a burger with fries and my companion went for the Omelette. The hubby had a burger (he should have asked for medium rare -- it was a little past medium, but still good). The house made chips were good. My patty melt was good, and the fried cheese curds were great. Here are the misses - we stopped because of the ravings about their pies. We ordered strawberry rhubarb and it was clearly a store bought pie, with almost no fruit just the jelly. Very disappointed. The other thing is that the flies were everywhere! My wife and I stopped here for lunch because of 4 star rating. We were disappointed. I had a hamburger which was good but the onion was tough believe it or not. My wife had a French dip which was not good. The meat was tough and dry. In fact, from my perspective I am not sure what it was. The French fries were good -- hot, slightly crispy, and tasted good. We arrived at 12:45 pm and a lot of folks were getting done with lunch and headed out. Best I can tell it was local folks who use this place for a social gathering which is good. Everyone was nice. The bathrooms were usable but needed some attention for sure. You have probably read reviews that say don't rely on your first impressions from what the outside looks like. We were driving south through Wyoming on a national park trip, doing both Devils Tower and Fort Laramie in the same day. Absolutely no offense intended to those who live in this area, but there's absolutely nothing between those two places other that farms, so there weren't too many choices. It's the middle of nowhere! We settled in on eating at Outpost Cafe as it was pretty much the only game in town, short of grabbing munchies at the gas station. I hadn't expected too much when I walked in based on the condition of the building, especially the floors. However, the menu did have a decent selection of diner fare and, impressive to me, tater tots. We got the grilled turkey sandwich and the chicken philly sandwich. Neither was particularly memorable that I'd make a return trip back just for the food, but given the circumstances, it worked for us. read more

It's ok. Get's the job done. Omelette with American cheese as the feature cheese is not ideal. Ends up tasting plasticky, especially as it cools. In situations like this I end up thinking of all the things i would do differently while controlling the cost. Maybe half shredded and half the amount of american cheese. Hope they can do better. We stopped here for a late lunch on our way through town. It is a "wait to be seated" cafe and the menu has breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. There are daily specials as well. It seems like a pretty popular place for locals as well as travelers. We ordered sandwiches and a cinnamon roll to share. The cinnamon roll was delicious. I think it was better than Cinnabon. Our waitress recommended the stagecoach sandwich, so two of us got that. And it was good. One of us got the Cajun chicken sandwich and one got the outlaw sandwich. They were all really good. This is a family owned restaurant, in the middle of those amber waves of grain. So they also give welcoming service, even if you're from out of state. They have limited hours. Had no idea where to eat breakfast when driving from Cheyenne to Rapid City. Found this place by reading reviews on my Yelp app as we were driving on the interstate. If I had an image of a stereotypical cowboy diner in my mind, this would be it. Western decor, everyone addressed as hon, and huge plates of food for a very affordable price. Of all things I forget my phone when our meal was served sorry I don't have any pictures. Let's start with saying our first impressions weren't the best, I wanted to leave but the hubby wanted to stay. Before we got seated I had to check out the restroom, it was clean so I agreed to stay. Lol We didn't know what to do so we stood in line with people trying to pay until a customer told us to seat ourselves. I have eaten at this restaurant often over the past two years. But my service last Saturday was the worst. Waitress went on break with my food in the window. She served it to me cold. Sent it back and they reheated up the eggs. Rubbery scramble eggs suck. The new staff has no clue of what service is. On the contrary. Came Monday morning. There aren't many options in this small town and we picked the Outpost Cafe because it was right down the street from the hotel. When we entered we were not greeted. We stood at the front desk for a while waiting to be seated and finally someone at the first table told us that they didn't seat guests you could seat yourself. We walked back to the seating area and and a waiter told us that section was closed. We stood in the middle of the restaurant not knowing what to do until a waitress decided to come and seat us. There were very few options on the menu for vegetarians so we ended up eating a garden omelette (a breakfast item) for dinner. Hash browns are usually brown but these potatoes were barely cooked and the omelet had a slice of American cheese sitting on top - not melted. The waitress brought the bill and left it at the table and we inserted our credit card to pay and no one came to process it. We finally noticed someone taking their bill to the counter to pay and we were then able to pay and leave. read more
