I was traveling with 2 small dogs and got very lucky that they're dog friendly. Call and check to make sure they still are though, the owner told me when I checked out that they may not be dog friendly for much longer. I could tell the owner is a big time dog lover but understand her possible future decision to not take dogs anymore, can never tell how responsible of a dog owner one is or how behaved one dog is to the next. The room was very clean and comfortable had been updated not to log ago. The towels was very nice a definite upgrade from standard hotel motel fare. The bathroom was a little snug but not to uncommon for the era this place was built. One of the best things was the ability to open the windows and get fresh air into the room, had a newer flat screen TV with lots of good channel selections and the WIFi worked great. The cons: cozy rooms (but how much time do you spend in your room on vacation anyway?), our shower was slow to drain and left me in a puddle by the time I was done, no fridge/microwave in room (no place to put them, I understand), beds weren't the most comfortable, and a sizeable gap between blinds and windows that would allow people to see in. We hung a sheet over the window to fix this problem. It would be a good idea if the motel added curtains. Despite these few inconveniences, I definitely wouldn't hesitate to return to Avenue Motel in the future.

Even if you cancel 2 months before--you would still be charged $50. On the two nights I was there they did not fill all the rooms (and there are only 7 rooms) so I definitely wouldn't suggest booking in advance. Why risk a schedule change arising & you losing money? There are other hotels in Ludington that allow you to not pay a cent until you arrive--no charge if you need to cancel. Here is the thing that really got me. I made a reservation back in April for a stay in July. I requested Room 6 or 7 & said I would prefer an end room if available. I also shared that it was a rough trip for me because it was my first trip after my husband passed away & I was coming alone to visit our favorite place. She not only emailed me but also called me & said that she was going to be able to give me the end room, number 7. She also said she would keep in mind the information I had shared with her about the loss of my husband. I had no idea what that meant. Extra TLC perhaps? Another thing the reservation had stated was that there was "Early check-in available on request." & "Late check-out available on request." Well, I emailed regarding both & got no response. I had wanted to perhaps drop off my luggage early so it wouldn't be in the back of my vehicle when it was parked and i was walking around town. When I arrived in July I was taken aback at the lack of attention to detail. First of all, no one was at the desk--you have to pick up a cell phone & call a number and wait for them to come over from the house. And when she ambled down she said to me, "You are in Room 5." I said, "No, I am in Room 7. You promised me the end room." She said, "Yeah, sorry. There is a glitch in the system. I gave it to someone else." (A glitch in the system--there are only SEVEN rooms--write stuff down!) She made no mention of my newly widowed state--& the solution to the problem--she offered me a bigger room (?) I said, "No. The last thing I want is a bigger room--I am here ALONE. If you want to charge me less because you weren't able to honor what you promised me, I'll be okay with that." And what was really frustrating was that I had had a booking come up for my second date there, a job, but I turned it down because I didn't want to lose my deposit on the room--THAT SHE ENDED UP GIVING TO SOMEONE ELSE. She did back down and ended up giving me the room she had promised. So then she gave me a sheet of paper with the room code--she let me into the room. I was not impressed with it--but as soon as I got my stuff into the room I thought to myself--I better make sure I am able to get back into the room--because she just struck me as absent minded. I shut the door and tried the code over and over. You probably guessed it by now--she had given me the wrong code. So I went back to the office and called again--from the cell phone sitting on the desk--no one in the office--and was given the correct code over the phone--with no apology. Then, because I was exhausted and had a bit of work to do--I decided to make myself a pot of coffee--I looked at the coffee maker and was disgusted--there was a ton of dust on it--and as I looked around--I realized the whole place looked like it hadn't been dusted--so back off to the office I went--called the cell phone again sitting on the desk--no one in the office--and got one of them to bring me a cloth and cleaner--and yes, I cleaned my own room. The carpet was dirty too--my socks and slippers became black from walking on it. Another thing of note was this is the first time I had ever been in a hotel room that did not have a place for you to sit & have a meal or sit to work at your computer--no small table and chair(s). In order to use my computer I had to pull a rocking chair up to a recliner--I had to sit on the rocking chair & hunch over the recliner with my computer on that. It forced me to sit in a position that killed my back. When I arrived in the room it was HOT. The windows were open--I needed to immediately shut them and get the air conditioning on. They were SO hard to shut. It took me a long time & a lot of effort. The view out the back window was onto an alley with garbage cans & there were spider webs in the window. The view out the front window is the parking lot. The bathroom was so tiny and the shower the smallest I had ever encountered--and I am tiny--5'7" 125 lbs.--It was like showering in a box--just awful. In the pictures on their website there are billowy country style curtains on the windows. In my room there were plain white shades on one window and a single white drape on the other. There are many other choices for hotels in the area with better views, cleaner rooms, better furnished rooms, more reasonable prices, less absent minded hosts and much better cancellation policies. I would choose one of those for your stay.

I was hired to DJ a wedding at the Stearns. But given that the area didn't have a lot of choices for quality lodging, I accepted my fate and booked a room for the night. I was impressed with the history of the hotel. It's been around since the 1800s and most of the original wood and architecture is in tact. Talk with the front desk and have them tell you the story of this Stearns fella who built the place. Pretty rich history here. I didn't interact much with the staff except for the front desk folks. They were very friendly and knew a ton about the area and the hotel. I was there a bit earlier than normal checking because of my role with the wedding, so my room wasn't ready that early; however, they were super willing to get it ready for me early. We just had to wait on the precious guest to check out. So that was cool. It was a reasonably priced and very clean room. Pretty spacious for a queen bed, mini fridge, and microwave. The hotel is within walking distance to everything Ludington has to offer and sits across the street from a historical building with a clock tower remnant of Back to the Future. My favorite part of this hotel, though, was the tiki bar located downstairs and away from the rooms. It felt like everybody in town was there. The crowd was great, the drinks were reasonable, and the music was my cup of tea. Remember, this is a picky DJ who's seen his share of parties. Bathroom toilet takes forever to circle around the bowl. The tv is quite small with not a lot of channels but that doesn't take away from my experience compared to the others. I think there needs to be free breakfast for the prices they charge especially in a downtown area. I think in a downtown area with many choices for hotels, motels, inns, b&b's this could be better and I hope it can remain respectful to the old but revamp it a little bit

While taking my information (even though this was initially booked online, cancelled and reserved again with an Agent at the Motel for a different date via phone), the male front desk attendant asked me TWICE if I was "Ok". I'm not sure what he meant by Ok... Was I acting tired, weird, off??? This was approximately 7pm at night. I was one of three cars in the parking lot. I asked the front desk attendant if he knew where the nearest car wash was and he again acted like I was coming from another planet. Dropped off a few items in my room and headed to the car wash, 1/4 mile away. Before I left for the carwash, the woman in the room to the right was outside smoking and talking about her SSI. When I got back from the carwash, the woman in the room to the left of me was outside smoking, talking on her phone and then when back inside her room to yell at a child, which was completely audible in my room. And then there is my room, first floor with two windows... Within about five minutes of arriving back at my "overly rustic" disgusting room, I realized that one of the windows was open (due to a fly buzzing in the window) and then discovered NEITHER of my first floor windows had locking mechanisms. My front door did not have a deadbolt. I was only in the bathroom for a half a second and don't know if there was a third window in there. In addition to nothing looking like it was presented online, aka the hotel family owners who wanted a hotel and five acres for their family to thrive on, I realized I was at the "rape hotel" and everything thing seemed beyond risky. Tried to withdraw my request to stay the night but the front desk attendant was on a dinner break. Dropped my keys in the box and he popped out of nowhere. The front desk attendant offered to put me in a different room but quite honestly, if you are going to put a single female in a first floor room where the windows don't lock, there is no deadbolt and the pictures on the internet look nothing like the actual room with surrounding subsidized rooms for the less fortunate... I was done with the experience. Thanks for the memories, glad I wasn't on the roster of victims that night... I wish I would have taken more pictures but will share the pics I have. Ultimately, I did not respond in time to my challenge from my Cap One dispute. Don't waste your SAFETY, time or money...

The cottage was well kept, updated with new appliances and furniture, and very comfortable. The pool appeared to be in great shape and they have firewood onsite to use in the fire pits. We will come back and stay and we suggest you check them out! The location is very convenient. The state park is right around the corner and downtown Ludington is minutes away also.
