You can see a variety of animals like foxes, bears and elk. This small zoo has some picnic areas along with a cafe and gift shop. Best of all it is a free zoo. Afterwards, we walked along the lake and the beach. If you're in the Oshkosh area, this zoo is definitely a must see!!

A great place to visit on a Friday afternoon…read more Not far from downtown Neenah and Appleton are the Heckrodt Wetlands. You get walk through this boggy terrain via numerous elevated wooden paths. The signs were informative and helped you better understand the nature surrounding you. It also has a pretty pond on which you can find many different types of birds.

Besides a great kids playground, ample room and picnic tables for large celebrations (the reason I visited twice), including a massive outdoor grill, the same one I personally cooked over 250 hamburgers and probably 200 hot dogs for a family celebration once. Oy... new respect for people that do this for a living. That was a long afternoon. Nice bridges over the river, lots of woods to explore, several toilets (you wanted to know that didn't you?). Managed by the local Lion's Club as I understand it. Call ahead, reserve. Don't know the price but this is a fantastic place to have a large family gathering, exactly the kind that, uh, isn't happening right now. But it will some day! Seriously, a great park you can literally rent for a big outdoor shindig.

When I went here as a kid, one could observe 1000's of waterbirds. Now there are dozens…read more None-the-less, this is still a nice place to spend some "wild" time. There are times, during migrations, that you can see dozens of species of birds. You can visit the Neustadter Nature Center for information on the marsh. There are also occasional nature programs there. You can rent canoes and life jackets at the center so you can paddle through the marsh. There are about 2400 acres to explore. In most years ospreys nest on the roof of the observation tower. You can see the nest's progression via the "Osprey cam". Spend some time at Pinecrest (also on hwy JJ), go a little farther west. Bring your binoculars and enjoy some fine birding and walking and canoeing. It's quiet and peaceful. I was out there this winter and saw a snowy owl and some short eared owls. In the spring the marsh is alive with waterfowl. After you wear yourself out at the marsh, drive west into Collins and treat yourself to excellent food at the Al Corso Restaurant. Pinecrest, the marsh, and Al Corso, the perfect trifecta for a wonderful day. Make sure you wear sturdy shoes.

The De Pere Riverwalk and Wildlife Viewing Pier is aptly named. It's a walking path around a river,…read moreit's a pier, it's a place to spot wildlife. This park is located in downtown De Pere, and consists of paved walking/strolling trails that wind around the Fox River. The riverwalk extends to a pier, where you can look out onto the river and see lots of birds, including pelicans. The pelicans seemed to like hanging out by the rushing dam -- they were catching fish in the river. Humans were catching fish too. There were several people fishing, and one person that I saw caught a huge fish. There's a sign on the pier that tells you what kind of fish live in the river: walleye, sturgeon, carp, perch and others. Apparently, you can kayak in the Fox River, and there's a lock here that takes you down the dam. I didn't get to experience that, but supposedly it's a very cool thing to do here.
